RAISING THE BAR

30 LGBT Lawyers To Be Sworn Into Supreme Court Bar

Supreme CourtNext week, 30 gay and lesbian lawyers from the National LGBT Bar Association will be sworn into the Supreme Court bar during a courtroom ceremony.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday January 22, and according to the association’s Executive Director D’Arcy Kemnitz, many members will already be in town for President Obama’s inauguration that Monday.

This is the first time the National LGBT Bar Association will take part in the mass swearing-in that occurs on most days the court is in session. A Supreme Court lawyer customarily vouches for prospective members while Chief Justice John Roberts welcomes them before they swear to support the Constitution.

Although openly gay lawyers already practice before the Supreme Court, this is the first time they will be identified as members of the LGBT Bar.
