Since same-sex marriage became legal in New York a year ago, over 3,000 gay couples have committed to loving, lasting relationships under the law. The Marriage Equality Act was passed on June 24, 2011, opening up the doors for 3,047 same-sex couples to be legally married in New York so far, according to the Department of Health. Since the numbers do not include couples wed in New York City, the actual number is probably higher. New York is the sixth state to allow gay marriage, even allowing couples from other states to swing by and get legally hitched.
On this July 4th, news of such wonderful progress definitely makes us proud to be Americans.

And yet instead of celebrating, we still have people who would deny these couples the opportunity for simple recognition and happiness, even some within our own community: http://bipolarbear.co.nz/2012/06/02/why-queer-theory-sucks/
