3. Bianca Casady (of CocoRosie) Who She Is: One half of the band CocoRosie, these surreal sisters are the divas of anti-folk music. Mixing rap, with opera, with folk, with punk, with electronica, this band might not be known for their MC street cred (and have certainly caused a bit of controversy for their use of the n-word) but Bianca Casady should be praised for her lyrical genius. While her sister Sierra (a classically trained opera singer) wails over a sultry harp, Bianca lays down some strange rhymes that certainly command attention. We don’t know if she prefers men or ladies in bed (her lyrics sometimes suggest straightness) but her commitment to appearing in gender-fucked outfits (usually with a drawn on mustache) makes her a queer icon. For a while, she even talked about cutting off her breasts as a feminist art statement.
What She’s Up to Now: CocoRosie just released their fifth album, Tales of a Grass Widow, which is already receiving almost universal acclaim.
Choice Lyric: “Broken sundown fatherless showdown / Gun hip swollen lip bottle sip, yeah I suck dick / Loose grip on gravity falls sky blinding crumbling walls / River sweep away my memories of / Children’s things a young mother’s love …”
