Christian researcher Ryan T. Anderson claims that it’s harder to admit to being an evangelical Christian than it is to come out as an LGBTQ person.
Anderson made the argument at an LGBTQ business summit organized by The Atlantic, according to The Christian Post.
Anderson said:
“What I see here is that if you are a conservative Evangelical at a major law firm or at an Ivy League university, you have a much harder time coming out of the closet as a conservative Evangelical than you do coming out as a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
“That’s an empirical question but my experience at Princeton, and that was a decade ago, that it was much more of a contentious subject to say that you were opposed to same-sex marriage than to say that you were in favor of it.”
Anderson made the claims while discussing the need for a national non-discrimination act to address the myriad Christian-owned businesses that are turning away same-sex couples.

He’s opposed to such an act, saying it could criminalize Christians for their views on homosexuality.
“What I would suggest,” he sayid, “the protections here would be market competition.
“Already 89 percent of Fortune 500 companies have voluntarily enacted non-discrimination statutes on the basis of sexual orientation. This is working its way out on a voluntary basis.”
Anderson has gone on the record as saying he believe same-sex marriage is “based on a lie.”
Earlier this year, in an interview with Sandy Rios of the American Family Association, he claimed that gay marriage advocates are akin to people who opposed interracial marriage:
“In the same way when there were some racists who tried to say that you can’t have interracial marriage, that was propaganda, it was a lie, and it failed. In the same way, trying to eliminate that marriage is about uniting the two halves of humanity, not black and white, because that’s not the two halves of humanity, the two halves of humanity, male and female, husband and wife, mom and dad, you can’t erase that, and in the long run the truth will win out.”

I’ve always been out in my career. I was the first openly gay priest in my diocese when I was ordained. I’ve certainly experienced some prejudice and discrimination in the church, but I’ve probably experienced more prejudice in the LGBT community as a Christian and a priest. I’m a decent looking guy but I’ve had guys tell me that they couldn’t possibly date a priest. I wonder what they don’t like – that I’m smart, well-educated, and have good values??? Religion is a complex thing. It has done a lot of harm (esp to LGBT folks) but it’s also done a lot of good. Last year my church gave away half a million pounds of food to 40,000 people. Furthermore, I spend a lot of my time visiting the sick and comforting the sorrowful. AND in my church, I’m allowed to marry same sex couples. It took us a long time to get here (way too long, in my opinion), but we finally made it. The church needs to accept LGBT folks. After all, the church has ALWAYS had gay/lesbian clergy and gay/lesbian parishioners. But the LGBT community also needs to accept that you can be both gay and religious.

They have no trouble finding men to date, one recently married his partner, and none have ever complained of disapprobation from either congregants or the Gay community.
It has always been harder to come out as gay, and no one has ever been beaten to death for coming out as Christian in the US, and rarely anywhere else except at the hands of Islamist radicals (who also kill lgbt folks).

Marriage equality was achieved with historically astonishing speed! MUCH more quickly than enslaved people of color achieved emancipation. MUCH more quickly that women achieved the right to vote.

What the religious right is trying to do is claim they are being discriminated against when this is clearly not true. They try to claim they are the victims, when for decades they were victimizing OTHERS. They are upset they lost just about every court battle (the only rare exception is Hobby Lobby which the Supreme Court may backtrack on anyways).
These people are NOT victims. They are privileged. Often they are also very wealthy. They are not disadvantaged in anyway. They have strong preference in many parts of this country and gay people still can be fired in many states simply for being gay.

I can find you tons of law firm partners who are very publically on the Vestry of an Episcopal Church, the Board of Deacons of a Presbyterian Church or a Catholic Knight of Malta. [Typhon] I have heard this argument before… the only means of persuasion is apparently (pardon the expression) to crawl up our tormentors arses… One wonders how long we must wait for the poor dear pointless superstitious primates to come to the party and start conferring the tolerance and love they demand so readily for themselves. Personally i think satire and criticism of fantasy based beliefs can be highly effective.

[Typhon] Why don’t you hop over to a Muslim majority country and try preaching this message to those who need it far more… the most christians and muslims will generally get from gays is pointed criticism or ridicule, one wishes that was all gays got in return rather than extermination of having to share the planet with relgious fantacists who would deny in a moment to gays the rights they expect and demand for themselves.
