Exile In Lizville

Celebrity culture tends to be pretty hyper, and even more so with a growing crop of young talents constantly vying for the spotlight. Once in a great while, however, a singer, actress or other celebrated person manages to survive through the years.

As this happens they tend to adapt to the changing times, often alienating long-standing fans in the process. That's exactly what happened between singer Liz Phair and Queerty correspondent Megan Metzger, who admits she once loathed her icon so much that she wanted her off the planet. But, just as some star alienate their base, they too can stage a come back, shining brighter than ever.

After the jump, Metzger traces her rocky relationship with Phair – and how a live show last week rekindled their unspoken – most likely unrequited – romance.

Kenn Jankowski Tames The Republic Tigers

Marrying soaring guitar pop and dazzling harmonies with electronic atmospherics, The Republic Tigers manages to straddle the contemporary and vintage. And while you might hear glimmers of the Shins or Caribou, this Tigers’ roar is distinctly original.

May’s turning out to be pretty sweet for the Missouri-based Tigers. The band released its first record, Keep Color on Chop Shop Records, a new label from Alex Patsavas, who, as the savvy music supervisor for prime time guilty pleasures Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl and dead-and-buried teen soap the O.C., made indie rock commercially viable.

And, as if that's not enough, Queerty recently showcased the Tigers’ first single, “Buildings and Mountains." That is a pretty high honor, yes, but the boys are especially jazzed for their television debut on tonight’s Late Show with David Letterman.

Queerty correspondent and fellow Missouri native Megan Metzger spoke with Kenn Jankowski, the Republic Tigers ringleader, about rock ‘n’ roll in the Heart of America, road life and stealing from Sarah Jessica Parker.

Is Jonny Makeup For Real?

We're not really sure what to make of self-professed celebrity Jonny Makeup. Aside from a few snarky Gawker references, he's not big on our radar.

That may change as Makeup – the "heiress" of American Apparel – makes a play for wonky-eyed Paris Hilton's new MTV show, Paris Hilton's My New BFF.

We were curious about this specimen, who has also appeared on Tyra Banks' talk show, so we dispatched brave Queerty correspondent Megan Metzger have a bit of face time with Makeup. And, the way she tells it, Jonny's more than just a side show. In fact, she describes him as "one shrewd cookie."

Read the duo's dialogue and decide for yourself – after the jump…

Exclusive: Lesbian Artist "Spits" On Art Scene

New York's art scene gets some West Coast love this evening as Nicole J. Georges and "Sister Spit" descend upon our sleepy little town.

The quartet sprang from the mind of San Francisco-based author and literary curator Michelle Tea, who last year piled some pals into a van and toured the States to spread their poetic gospel.

"Some pals" may be a bit dismissive, especially considering the quartet's all-star, all-lesbianic line-up. In addition to Tea, Sister Spit consists of author and short filmmaker Tara Jensen, author Rihannon Argo and the aforementioned Ms. Georges, a zinemaker and artist who specializes in furry, somewhat disquieting creatures.

Georges and the gals reunite in NYC tonight for a one-off reunion and, in celebration of the event, Queerty correspondent Megan Metzger chatted with the pet portraitist about touring with the Sisters, why we should remember 'zines, picking her beastly subjects and the difference between East Coast and West Coast artists.

Gay Author Lets It All Out
Inside Scott Heim's Mind

Scott Heim’s debut novel, 1995’s Mysterious Skin rocked the literary world with its stark portrayal of child abuse and sexuality in a sleepy rural town. Ten years later, director Gregg Araki adpated Skin into a film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whose daring performance transformed the sitcom sweetie into an indie darling.

Heim’s third and latest, We Disappear, finds the former New Yorker returning to Western Kansas. But this time, dude gets personal. Queerty correspondent Megan Metzger recently sat down with Heim to discuss this latest tome, how writers must adapt in a world where we’d rather read a blog than a book, hiding inside his characters and why we should all join him at a reading this Thursday. Hint: it's more than just the free booze.
