Will Thomas Beatie Become the Next Jon & Kate?

It took Nadya Suleman eight children to sell a television show (that has yet to be picked up). It might take memoirist Thomas Beatie only two.

Thomas Beatie Gives Birth to a Boy!

Joining their daughter Susan Juliette (pictured) is a little brother! Thomas Beatie, who everyone knows as the "pregnant man," and wife Nancy this morning welcomed their second child through "natural birth," which is sure to send curiosity reeling since Thomas, 35, had gender reassignment surgery and says he does have sex with his wife. (Those familiar with these operations will know it's possible to create a small-ish working penis while maintaining a functioning everything else.) Congratulations to the burgeoning family!

Woman Holds Off Becoming a Man To Give Birth to Twins

When it comes to abandoning plans to have a sex change, you've got folks like Mike Penner, the Los Angeles Times sports writer who, somewhere before the operating room doors swung open, decided not to have a sex change surgery. And then there's Ruben Noe Coronado, a Spanish 25-year-old FTM hopeful who, in the middle of transitioning, got pregnant — and put his plans on hold.

Details Picks Clay Aiken and Thomas Beatie as Token Gays For "Power List"

We have it on good authority that despite Details' reputation for being six beers away from turning queer, editor Dan Peres is a raging homophobe, that those racist and offensive "Gay or…" pieces that he's been forced to apologize for are composed laughing at us instead of with us and that the gays on staff are constantly subjected to Mickey O'Rourke-esque fag jokes.

But we like Details. Those "Gay or…" pieces are pretty funny and we enjoy Michael "I write about hot gay sex, but don't actually do it" Chabon's ongoing column in the magazine. Plus, carrying around a copy of Details in your back pocket is hanky code for "Likes to fuck metrosexuals/ likes to be fucked by metrosexuals"– we forget which side means which.

The inclusions of Clay Aiken and "pregnant man" Thomas Beatie in their annual "Power 40 List" is a perfect example of the queasy/happy dichotomy Details heaps upon the gay reader.

Thomas Beatie Release Memoir, Predictably

We knew it was coming and now it's hear: childbearing trans man Thomas Beatie finally published his memoir, the appropriately entitled Labor of Love: The Story of One Man’s Extraordinary Pregnancy. Here's a snippet of the description:

Labor of Love chronicles Thomas Beatie’s unique life experiences: his less-than-idyllic childhood in Hawaii; his transition from female to male; his marriage to his wife, Nancy; his legal battles to live as a man; his fight to conceive a child; and the birth of their daughter, Susan, in late June. Labor of Love is a groundbreaking book because it tackles social, political, and legal questions about gender, marriage, and family. Thomas and Nancy’s uphill battle to have a baby is both fascinating and touching. They are a normal couple who wanted a family, and yet the circumstances surrounding their desire to get pregnant and their journey to get there are truly extraordinary.

And astoundingly marketable!

Fox News is back to its anti-trans ways!

The network garnered some queer criticism earlier this year after trash talking trans man Thomas Beatie.

Now anchor Gregg Jarrett and US Magazine editor-at-large Ian Drew take a few shots at Isis, America's Next Top Model's new trans model. Our favorite part comes when Drew calls Isis' inclusion as a ratings grab and a television trend. Jarrett, of course, is flabbergasted by "him or her."

The gay media watchdogs over at GLAAD are fuming, naturally, and have asked supporters to contact Fox and gripe to their hearts content. We've included contact information after the jump…

Beatie Tops People As Reader Notes Mag's Gay Love

People magazine this week shelled out $300,000 to publish photos of trans man Thomas Beatie and new baby. And it's apparently paid off. The article is, according to People's website, this week's most read story, beating a cover story on Barack Obama's home life.

Questions of Beatie's intent aside, we're pretty impressed that a national magazine's going after this story. And Beatie's hardly the only queer who shows up in the weekly's pages, as a reader points out:

…Please do an amusing biting gay critique of how People has gay stories like EVERY WEEK! Seriously. This week there's something about ugly Lane Bass's HUNK, and Lindsay's dyke moment. I swear that section in the front, Scoop or insider or something either has shirtless guys or stories about gays, or is quoting GLAAD.

We're not surprised, of course. Gays do make the best gossip.

Trans Man's Baby Girl Revealed!

The media circus has begun! Good Morning America today featured some People magazine pictures of trans man Thomas Beatie and his baby girl, Susan Juliette.

Watch the Towleroad-provided video about the baby's birth and other precious details, after the jump. Be sure to note that Beatie didn't have a c-section, as previously reported. This man did it the old fashioned vaginal way, which takes serious balls.

Trans man "mama" Thomas Beatie's memoir may have been shelved, but that doesn't mean the pot's dry: "Discovery Communications is in negotiations for the exclusive U.S. rights to a documentary about Thomas Beattie[sic], the first man to give birth… September Films owns the global rights to the one-hour documentary, which will follow Beattie [sic] from childhood to the date of the birth, the newspaper says." Of course, the "first man" bit remains essential to Beatie's story, although he's not. [TV Week]

Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie Births Girl

The headline says it all, folks! Thirty-four year old trans man Thomas Beatie gave birth to a healthy baby girl this morning. Just in time for Independence Day!

Update: ABCNews.com has now included Beatie in its photo slideshow of “Medical Marvels,” which warns “viewer discretion advised,” right next to “the Elephant Man,” a girl with an enormous tumor on her face, a 15-year-old girl with clubbed feet, and the “Tree Man” whose body is covered in gnarled growths. Classy!

Looking Beyond Thomas Beatie

Thomas Beatie's story continues to pack a punch. In fact today's NY Times piece on the pregnant trans man provides two in one!

First the smaller item: publishing house St. Martin's Press has shelved Beatie's planned memoir. Perhaps because of speculation that Beatie was in it for the money?

Regardless of Beatie's shrinking spotlight and gossip fodder, there's a bigger and far more important cultural narrative at work. And one that's almost as American as apple pie…

Pregnant Trans Man As Mother, Not Father
A Very Special Father's Day Post...

Pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie's within weeks of birthing his first child.

As he and wife Nancy get their nursery together, stock up on diapers and other baby-related goods, big questions remain for the happily queer couple, like how to make sure he – the "gestational carrier" – is not listed as the baby's mother.

Post Repeats Unfunny Trans Joke

Sean Delonas must have drawer's block.

The NY Post cartoonist has taken two shots at pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie. The first came back in April, when Beatie first burst on the scene. And now, inspired by news of Beatie's forthcoming delivery date, Delonas again turned his attention to the baby daddy.

Too bad Delonas couldn't stretch his imagination, huh?

Pregnant Man: Four Weeks Left

Thomas Beatie returns to the spotlight. The pregnant trans man, who caused a sensation by appearing on Oprah earlier this year, graces the ever-classy pages of News of The World to show off his increasingly large baby bump.

In addition to revealing the baby's sex – a girl – Beatie suggests he and his wife may keep reproducing after the new child arrives in four weeks:

I feel on top of the world.

I'm 36 weeks now and almost due but I feel fantastic. Every day Nancy and I think about how we just cannot wait to hold our daughter for the first time, to finally get to touch her and see her face.

We have her nursery ready and her diapers are lined up in her bedroom. Everything is ready to go. We have even picked a name which we both love—although we're waiting until she is born before we tell anyone. All the people who really know us and love us, our friends and family, have been incredibly supportive.

So much so we might even have more children. We will just see what the experience is like with our daughter's arrival first and then give it some thought.

We're sure trans activists are luke warm to this news.

Thomas Beatie got some flack for allegedly using the "pregnant trans man" story for personal gain. A German trans man named "Dylan" never wanted such attention. That's why he kept his pregnancy a secret and hasn't talked until now, ten years after giving birth. Says Dylan of the experience: "People thought I was putting on weight. They were mostly treating me as a man and no one is going to start wondering whether a man might be pregnant." How times change! [Sunday Express]

Bill O'Reilly probably thinks himself the straightest man in America, but he's sure got a strange fixation with the homosexuals.

File this one under "half-assed."

Fox News' Greg Gutfeld apologized for trashing trans man Thomas Beatie. And when we say "apologize," we mean read outraged readers' letters and defended himself by calling critics "fat faced" and "wusses." He also tells people they need to "grow cajones like Thomas Beatie."

We can't say we're surprised or expected anything less…

Journo Takes On Thomas Beatie's Femininity

Journo Jeff Jacoby doesn't hold pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie in high regard:

Could anything be more incoherent or sad? Gender Identity Disorder is not "incredible," no matter how politically fashionable it has become to claim otherwise. It is not just another hue in the rainbow of diversity. It is a dysfunction. It should be met with sympathy, counseling, and therapy, not with five-page spreads in People and appearances on Oprah.

Headlines notwithstanding, there is no "pregnant man." There is only a confused and unsettled woman, who proclaims that surgery, hormones, and clothing made her a man, and is clinging to that fiction even as the baby growing in her womb announces her womanhood to the world.

We can't say we're surprised by Jacoby's reaction – he once argued that legalizing sodomy would lead to an explosion of incest and bestiality.

And we thought MSNBC's Morning Joe team were offensive! Fox News' Red Eye anchors had plenty of bile to spread about pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie, like referring to him as a "transgender sideshow" and hoping the delivery is "the worst experience in his life." Nice…

We would call GLAAD, but, you know…

Kevin Naff wrote a response to our GLAAD/Thomas Beatie story. The gist: "The only criticism I have for GLAAD is that it couldn’t suppress the Beatie story." [Washington Blade]

Exploring GLAAD's Silence On Beatie

If you're anything like us, you're wondering why GLAAD's remained silent on Joe Scarborough's trans trashing last week.

For those of you who missed it, Scarborough and his cohorts on MSNBC's Morning Joe took multiple shots at pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie, whom they referred to as disgusting and the such. Obviously we all knew Beatie's Oprah appearance would cause a controversy, but had hoped that mainstream news agencies would have a little more class. Not Scarborough, though.

NY Post Restrains Self In Beatie 'Toon

NY Post 'toonist Sean Delonas has garnered gay ire for his unflattering portrayal of a super-sized Rosie O'Donnell and a sheep-loving Jim McGreevey, so we're surprising his take on pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie actually isn't offensive.

Old dogs can learn new tricks!

The ever-petulant Bill O'Reilly and his Fox News colleague, Bernard Goldberg can't stomach pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie. Goldberg described the gender-bending scenario as a "tragedy" and O'Reilly lamented, "You imagine a poor kid getting born into that family going, 'Hey…whoa. Who are you today?'" Okay, so who wants to play a game of nature versus nurture? [Media Matters]

Even Oprah Can't Spark Trans Love

Thomas Beatie caused quite a stir when he penned his Advocate admission: he's a trans man with child. Yesterday's Oprah appearance, however, will only amplify the national spotlight. And, of course, bring out haters like Joe Scarborough and, by the looks of this message board, Oprah's viewers.

Joe Scarborough's Trans Comments Spark Protest

Joe Scarborough can expect some angry letters! The Republican politico turned MSNBC host shocked and awed on his MSNBC show, Morning Joe when he derided pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie. A blogger by the name of Scandalous Candice passes on her account of the incident:

[Joe and his colleagues, Mika Brzezinski and Wilie Geist] reported on Thomas Beatie, the transgendered male who is having a baby. I admit that this is an unusual story. But they put the story in what they call an useless news category “News You Can’t Use” and proceeded to make fun of them and call the couple “disgusting” and make “ewww” sounds.

The also called it “garbage” and [said] “people don’t want to wake up to this crap.” That was quoted by Mika Brzezinski. Joe used the story to lead into the next story by saying “this is probably why 81% of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.” A poll reported by the New York Times.

In an effort to right this fucked up wrong, Candice penned a letter to MSNBC demanding a full apology for the "foul and juvenile" remarks. She's also contacted GLAAD and other rabble-rousers to put some pressure on Scarborough and his team.

Update: Watch the video, after the jump. We're especially upset with Mika's comment: "don't want to know the deal. I don't want to hear. I'm gonna be sick. I'm gonna be sick. I am upset. That was not only stupid and useless, but quite frankly, disgusting." We're not sure why, but we expected better.

Thomas Beatie's got some balls. No, not literally, but you've got to give him credit for telling all on Oprah. Yeah, the pregnant trans man made a splash with his Advocate admission, but nothing compares to the attention he'll receive after this appearance.

Above you'll see Beatie and his wife, Nancy discussing the insemination process, sound effects and all. More impressively, Nancy's grown daughters praise Nancy and Thomas as nuptial role models who are "regular" and "very much in love." Oprah approves, of course. Will her viewers?

After the jump, the couple talks being rejected by nine doctor. Their current doctor, meanwhile, describes Thomas' pregnancy as "average."

What's with these late night jokesters? First we had Jay Leno's Ryan Phillippe moment. Now we hear that David Letterman had a laugh at pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie last night, including referring to him as an "androgynous freak show." There's a reason why we don't watch this shit…

Pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie will appear on this Thursday's Oprah, which is kind of the best thing that could ever happen to anyone trying to spread a message. [Willamette Week]

"Pregnant trans man" Thomas Beatie will reportedly hold a press conference tomorrow, April Fool's Day. We're going to be totally disappointed if this has been some sort of sham. [Guanabee]

Pregnant Man

This one's sure to fuck with the social conservatives.

A totally awesome trans man named Thomas Beatie successfully conceived a child, which he'll raise with his wife, Nancy. Though certainly an incredible turn of events, not everyone's reactions are encouraging:

Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.

Well, those who don't sure will now.
