I think with me and Sam, there’s definitely an understanding there, like: ‘Hey gurl, how you doing?’ [laughs] But you know, there’s only a few of us actually, on a mainstream level. I think we’re building a little clique, I hope, but I haven’t met that many. I mean, Elton John is amazing, what a sweetheart, and Boy George is also incredible. I’ve sat down and had lunch with him before, he’s so smart and has been though A LOT, and now he’s in a really good, healthy space, and loves music and is DJing and is still really connected to pop culture. He was really interesting to talk to.”
— Adam Lambert asked whether there’s a fraternity among gay musicians during an interview with Attitude magazine

they are both amazeballs
Merv
Hey gurl?! No jazz hands from me!
PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID
Is “she” on “hey gurl” terms with the out singer from the band Years And Years?
ingyaom
I guess Ricky Martin, Lance Bass, George Michael, Michael Stipe, Clay Aitken, etc. don’t respond to “hey hurl”.
Giancarlo85
Lambert and Smith are cool, and I hope they continue doing what they are doing. Lambert is definitely very talented… both are really.
John Kuehnle
Melinda, do you watch E!?
CCTR
They should record a “Same Script” Whitney and Deborah or “Boy is Mine” Brandy and Monica style duet!
Avery Alvarez
@CCTR: LOL, a remake of “the boy is mine” by these two sounds sooo cheesy but somehow I want it!
CCTR
@Avery Alvarez: LOL, not really a remake but that story telling type of song where the two singers sing about and sort of bicker over the same man.
jason smeds
Oh, goodness, does Adam Lambert really have to reproduce the worst qualities of women? What is he going to start doing next? Calling Sam a bitch?
Gay men like Adam Lambert are almost self-parodies. They repeat sound-bites and memes they’ve heard from women. It’s like “daaaahling, what are you doing toniiiiiiiight?”.
The stretching of the vowels is the key here. Women stretch their vowels in order to draw attention to themselves. Gay men often copy them.
lauraspencer
Sounds like Lambert is trying to ride Smith’s coattails.
Adam can’t compare to Smith in hits, album sales or Grammy awards.
Giancarlo85
@jason smeds: Oh, goodness, look at who it is? The worst most ignorant troll on here. For one, Lambert isn’t doing that… but you fail in reading comrpehension to such an extreme.
You are a self parody yourself… what are you anyways, jason? A closeted loser who has nothing better to do but to mock other gay people.
Lambert is a good guy here and is doing very well with Queen. Gay men are being themselves by the way… it’s called having a fucking identity, something you don’t have.
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: This is where you’re bullshitting to an extreme. Smith has sold a few million and so has Lambert. So what were you talking about anyways?
Nobody is riding on anyones coattails. Lambert has been around for quite a while longer.
QJ201
I see the gay gestapo is in the house dictating what is appropriate behavior for gay men.
TemptyK
Tired of this fathead trash Sam Smith. He’s not even cute and I’m sick of his sappy whiny songs!
jason smeds
Adam Lambert stopped being popular because he confused gay rights with gay sexual exhibitionism. Remember that stage performance he gave at the American Music Awards where he kissed a guy on stage and cavorted inappropriately? What was the point of it? Repeat – what was the point of it?
He’s supposed to be a singer, not an exhibitionist.
He also neglected to remember that women find open displays of male homosexuality quite offensive. Women might tolerate male-male sexuality in an enclosed setting like a gay bar but when it moves into the mainstream, it represents a threat to her power.
Giancarlo85
@jason smeds: LOL. What the fuck are you talking about? Since when he is doing “gay sexual exhibitionism”? That sounds like a video on xtube of some dude doing it out in the park.
Are you a dumb ass? Freddy Mercury, Madonna, Mick Jagger… these are ENTERTAINERS. They are also singers. Same thing applies to Adam Lambert. They are ENTERTAINERS.
Women do not find open displays of male homosexuality offensive. Stop it with that misogynist crap of yours. So sick of this shit.
lauraspencer
@Giancarlo85…do you have nothing better to do than attack my comments.
Have you ever heard of google? Use it.
GRAMMY AWARDS
Lambert – 0
Smith – 4
TOP SELLING ALBUM (U.S. Sales)
Lambert – 837,000 “For Your Entertainment”
Smith – 1.34 million “In the Lonely Hour” and still selling
So to summarize Smith with one album and a decade younger than Lambert has sold more albums, had more top 10 hits and won more Grammy’s than Lambert has with 3 albums.
Smith hasn’t had to resort to basically being a cover band lead for Freddy Mercury.
There are the facts. Adam is jumping on the popularity of Smith to help promote his new album coming out this April.
For him to act like he, Sam, Elton and Boy George are the only gays in the music industry is rather arrogant. Mainstream level?? As Ingyaom says above what about…Ricky Martin, Lance Bass, George Michael, Michael Stipe, Clay Aiken. And let’s nor forget Freddy Mercury, Frank Ocean, Andy Bell, Fred Schneider, Mika, Bob Mould, Sylvester, Darren Hayes, Rob Halford, Stephen Gately, Rufus Wainwright, Will Young, Jake Shears, Rupaul, Jimmy Sommerville, Neil Tennant and a little known group called The Village People.
HIGHEST RANKING SONG ON THE TOP 40
Lambert – One song (“Whataya Want from Me”) made it to #10.
Smith – Two songs (“Stay with Me” & “In the Lonely Hour”) have both reached #2 on the top 40.
AGE
Adam Lambert – 33
Sam Smith – 22
Merv
@lauraspencer: Lots of stats, but why have you left out weight?
jason smeds
Even though Adam Lambert and Sam Smith might be gay, their image has largely been de-gayed by their labels. Sam Smith isn’t really allowed to market himself as gay. His visual image is largely sexless (heavy suit covering all his body), his lyrics largely gender non-specific (sung mostly in the first or second person rather than the gender-revealing third person).
These are the tricks that the labels use to market gay male singers. We really have not come a long way.
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: You just love spouting off bullshit. Adam is playing with Queen. He is doing just fine. And he has done well as an entertainer. And CD sales don’t matter to the degree that concerts do. The Rolling Stones have released a full album in eight years. They don’t need to do so.
And Adam isnt being a cover band lead for Queen. He actually has done well leading the group with such legends such as Brian May. I am not bagging on Sam Smith. I am just saying your argument that Adam is hanging on the coat tails of Sam Smith is stupid. He only named a few. He didn’t say they were the only gay people in music. You, like that loser Jason smeds, is reading into something that isnt there. And I don’t quite understand why you are insulting Adam Lambert.
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: I attack your comments because you are a biased stupid shit that is nothing more than a pest.
Giancarlo85
@jason smeds: You have the intelligence of a gnat. Do you have anything else stupid to say or are you done yet? Did you even read the lyrics of any of his songs?
tenthplanet
@lauraspencer: Smith stands on the shoulders of Lambert who took all the vitriol, hate, and death threats back in 2009 and made it safe for Smith and his ilk today. You have no memory apparently of how it was six years ago and how different it was for gay performers. Great progress has been made and it’s due to the courage of people like Lambert. Smith should bow down before Lambert – a great performer and a great man.
Saint Law
@jason smeds: My eye elided your posts but if I get the gist of them, you’re hurt because straight women laugh at how you speak?
But as you’ve told us many times already, men – both gay and straight – find you funny sounding. It’s one of the reasons you’re still a virgin.
Sluggo2007
Who writes this shit? Do they actually get paid for it?

Adam Lambert is a performer on a different level to many of today’s artists; they couldn’t do what he does. His outstanding voice, his musicality, his stage presence, his charisma, his incredible talent and his beauty inside and out, make him something truly magical. Entertainers like him don’t come round very often.
jason smeds
Adam Lambert was pretty much a flash in the pan. His female fans ultimately rejected him because they felt uncomfortable about his homosexuality and the way he wore it on his sleeve.
Let me repeat for the hard-of-hearing: women only accept male homosexuality if it is enclosed within a yard. Once it leaves the yard, male homosexuality becomes a threat to her power. It upsets the apple cart because it puts women into an inferior position rather than the superior position of being able to control male sexual behavior.
Milk
@ingyaom: But Ryan Gosling does.

@jason smeds: Aaron Schock is that you?
lauraspencer
@tenthplanet…
Encyclopedias or google are wonderful things…
Adam Lambert came out in 2009.
Gay marriage was starting to spread across the US and was already legal in…
Connecticut, Iowa and Vermont. Movement was happening and within less than 5 years gay marriage was legal in 37 states.
We had our first black President who was supportive of gay issues.
WILL & GRACE had already been off the air for 3 years. Mainstream TV shows like BROTHERS & SISTERS, REAL WORLD, SURVIVOR, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and many more featuring LGBT characters were on the air.
Neil Patrick Harris and Lance Bass had come out in 2006, another American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken came out in 2008, Ellen DeGeneres came out in 1997 and of course we already had Elton John, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Ian Mckellen, Rupaul….you get the point. I can easily go on and on,
Dustin Lance Black won his Oscar and made his moving speech on 2009. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN came out in 2005.
I’m not sure how old you are, but tenthplanet please don’t make it seem that 2009 was the dark ages of gay history and that Adam Lambert had such a struggle. It is insulting to those LGBT people who came before us who truly did struggle. Look back to the 1980s, 70s, 60s and before to see the shoulders that have been stood on for Lambert, you and me. Adam Lambert’s Nolan Miller padded shoulders haven’t done much lifting and Smith who has been out since his career even started (unlike Lambert) doesn’t need to bow down to him.
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: You are so stupidly ignorant. Why do people even bother? Adam was getting bothered about his sexual orientation even before he came out. People were insulting him, giving death threats and so forth. It’s Sam Smith who is riding on the coattails of Lambert and the greater acceptance of same sex marriage/equality (even in Smith’s own country).
You are posting a bunch of talking points, but you didn’t realize Adam Lambert came out a year after Proposition 8 was passed in supposedly one of the most liberal states in the country.
You are a nobody and your insults of Lambert are meaningless. Just like whatever crap Jason Smeds posts. You are acting like a child. Lambert has contributed a great deal to help gay musicians and artists… he had a lot more exposure than many other gay artists in the past.
Giancarlo85
@jason smeds: More misogynist bullshit from the biggest bullshit artist on here anyways. Why do you keep repeating the same crap over and over again? I guess when you repeat something enough you make yourself believe it. Poor little thing…
lauraspencer
@Giancarlo85…
Why do you feel the need to take comments so personally and attack fellow posters by calling them ignorant, stupid shits, bullshit artists? If you look at my postings I have never resorted to name calling. Please let’s keep it respectful. Don’t we have enough in our lives to fight that we don’t have to fight each other? Let’s have some respect for each other without name calling. This isn’t the playground and it isn’t fun to be bullied.
Romi
omg are we stil really discussing about Adam´s sexuality?? the man is outstanding, extremely intelligent and eloquent, his voice is out of this planet and he is having the time of his life. For the one who says that he is an a tribute band, do you know who Roger Taylor and Brian May are?? that´s rock royalty , do you how many artist would die to share the stage with them? and finally i love Sam Smith, is a great singer but let´s see if we are going to be talking about him 7 years from now. Adam is one of a kind, he is in his own league
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: Then stop acting like a douche. You won’t get treated this way if you acted more rationally. Your attacks on Lambert are pretty much on the same level as bullying.
Giancarlo85
Some gay people like to tear other gay people down… usually those who do that lack all self esteem and have nothing going on in their life. They have to attack others for their own shortcomings.
lauraspencer
@Giancarlo85…Were you looking in the mirror as you typed the above comment?
My comments have been based on the articles and their subjects. You are the one who attacks the posters with childish name calling.
Hope your weekend gets better and you get in a better mood. Peace.
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: I was talking directly to you. Your comments are not anything real. You are tearing down a gay man who is more successful than you are. You are a nobody.
Curty
@lauraspencer: Obama is biracial, not just of African decent. I’m biracial too, scots, english, native and black. We multi racial people who aren’t ashamed don’t just identify with one of our ethnic groups, but all. Just a fyi. Its disrespectful.
lauraspencer
@Gaincarlo85…How am I tearing down a gay man by stating record sales, chart statistics and Grammy Award wins? I think Sam and Adam are both talented.
As for my personal “success” you know nothing about me. I have a very fulfilling and happy life with friends, family and work. I own my home and have no debt and good health. I am successful. Thank you.
@Curty…I am multiracial as well. I think most everyone on this planet if you have your DNA tested is multiracial. There really are no “pure” lines left. I identified the President as black/African American because that is how he is most often identified in the media. I didn’t mean any disrespect.
jaleoman
Glad that they are friends and have a good relation, I actually
Like Sam Smith, and bought Adam’s first album.
Adam forgot to mention Ricky Martin, in Latin
America, many European countries, Australia
( where he is a judge at “The Voice) Middle Eastern,
Many Asian countries, and more 60 millions of
U.S. Hispanics Americans, Ricky has been, and
Still one of the hottest artist. His new album
Debuted 4 weeks #1 on Latin Billboard chart, and
Half of the world, his latest song ” Disparo al
Corazon” is #1 on the Latin Pop billboard charts.
He still selling more arenas and stadiums worldwide by himself
than any other openly gay artist. Just in Australia he will
Be doing 8 different arenas.
Saint Law
@jason smeds: But straight women hear you just fine and you sound funny. You look funny too. It’s another of the reasons why you’re still a virgin.
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: Record sales don’t make artists. 90% of the money made from record sales don’t go to the artists. The Rolling Stones haven’t released a full album in nearly a decade. But it’s not about record sales.
It’s about tours. Lambert has had several successful tours and is now presently having a successful tour with Queen. This is the measure of his success.
And Grammy Awards don’t mean jack shit. Can’t believe you even cite that garbage. The GRammys are well known to be fixed. How many Grammy Awards did the Rolling Stones get? Does that mean Sam Smith is better than the Stones now?
IF I recall the Stones had one Grammy Award… in 1965. LOL. They never got another one ever again. Doesn’t mean shit.
Giancarlo85
BTW, Adam’s Glam Nation tour sold nearly 99% of all tickets available for it.
Complete figures for the Queen Tour (14-15) are not totally available, but it is believed around 95-97% of all tickets were sold.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArGRM9JiTuXPdHppNjBDR1NxVDBQOFdGc3JNWG1FaXc&usp=sharing#gid=0
Extremely successful. Counting ticket sales and the merchandising the tour has made over $100 million (ticket sales around $80 million of that).
So yea, a weak cover uh huh… he’s succeeding greatly.
lauraspencer
@Giancarlo85….you do know that Lambert doesn’t play the same size venues as the Rolling Stones? You do realize that Lambert has three albums and sings many covers so he has enough material to do concerts? You claim I don’t know what I’m talking about but you spout off about the Rolling Stones winning 1 Grammy in the 1960s. That is wrong. The Stones have won 3 Grammy Awards during their career (one being a lifetime achievement award). Tell Beyoncé, Lady Gaga Taylor Swift, Mariah, et. al. that Grammy’s don’t matter.
One more thing for me to school you on. Smith has had one album. Give him a couple more years and he will be touring. You can’t compare Smith and Lambert when it comes to concerts since one of them has yet to embark on a tour. I believe Smith was opening act for Adele at one time, but he hasn’t headlined yet.
When you look at factors that both have shared Smith performs better.
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: The Stones downsized their venues in the last few years because of their age. They do play in the big super stadiums (with 50,000+ capacity), but that isn’t common. The last time I saw the Stones was in a smaller venue in 2014. You’re a dumb fool that didn’t even pay attention to half of what I wrote. You just dismissed everything.
Lambert has and always will be an entertainer. His focus will be on filling up stadiums… and he’s made $100 million with Queen in bigger stadiums than his Glam Nation Tour. So he’s doing very well… very successful.
You don’t know if Smith will be around in a couple of years… could be a one hit wonder… or a two hit wonder lol. And you don’t know if he’ll do another album that will sell that well.
Smith hsan’t performed better.
Giancarlo85
And Grammy’s don’t matter, and you are wrong about the Stones. STupid ignorant asshole. You don’t even know what you’re talking about. Grammy’s aren’t the end all. Some artists have never won them (or won them RARELY) and are more successful than those that do.
lauraspencer
@Giancarlo85…you really need a hug.
Looking at your comments on other threads I don’t understand why you have so much anger. It’s sad.
Yes, Lambert is in concert and attracting audiences WITH Queen. I do not think he would attract the same audience without Queen. Smith doesn’t need back up.
tenthplanet
@lauraspencer: You’re ignorance is showing – Lambert has been out since the age of eighteen – one of the reasons he had difficulty getting work – never hid his life – everyone at Idol knew he was gay – and after Idol when he could finally speak, he did it his way – Lambert was the first out gay man to receive a No. 1 album – check Billboard. He was also the first Idol to headline his own 100+ sold-out, worldwide tour.
Lambert’s voice is second to none and, in addition, he’s not just a recording artist, but a brilliant live performer.
Also a performer who doesn’t lie and cancel a concert, saying he’s ill, and then turning up at a karaoke bar.
martinbakman
Hey gurls!
Sounds to me like A.L. Is just admitting an automatic bond exists, that he and Sam Smith are both out gay performers, and that is a lonely, unpredictable playing field. So they appreciate each other in that regard. Of course one can’t know for sure from the written word what his body language and tone were. I expect it was a professional and respectful tone.
TemptyK
I know, right, Jason Smeds? I thought I was the only one who noticed. Adam Lambert has been FORCED to drastically tone it down by his label and he could almost far too easily “pass” for straight now — whatever that means.
As for Sam Smith, he’s so drab and just blehhh! He’s so unexciting and so unattractive, and I think his label wants to keep it this way as he’d receive less gay male attention. His songs are all “you”, “me” and I. They’re all non-gender specific and I guess that Lambert’s songs are this way too. They’re told to keep it sexless as it would cater to anyone willing to listen, and make women feel included!
I don’t know why these homos are mad that someone stated the simple fact that women are offended by male homosexuality. It’s the truth whether or not you choose to believe it. Women want you to want them even if they don’t want you back — it’s in their nature. Why should a(n) [insert approving adjective] male be chasing after other males if they’re here? They realize, as women, they can’t compete with a man and that drives them insane and makes them feel sexually powerless and devalued. I often notice how disappointed some pretty girls look when I turn my head to see who’s headed in my direction after hearing the footsteps, and just as quickly turn it back the other way. They expect me, as a male, to be captivated and wonderfully mesmerized by them. I’m sure you realize how quickly they’ll post another slightly more provocative picture if the previous didn’t blow up their notifications.
Most mothers, as females, are fully aware how selfish women are and that’s why you end up with Mommas’ Boys, because they’re trying to protect their sons from the hooked leonine claws of women. Of course, it’s not all women, but the VAST majority are that way and the sooner gay men realize it, the better. Women want to be wanted by **ALL** men, and that’s why male homosexuality is so threatening to them. It’s not misogyny; it’s the simple truth.
Also, tone it down with the Sam Smith posts. We all know he’s homo; you don’t have to claim him. He’s not even cute, and his winnings at the Grammys were unfair! We could let a month or two pass without mentioning his name on this site and nobody will notice. This crap got ancient in a quick hurry!
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: Smith hasn’t proved anything at all. So you are being presumptuous and ignorant. By the way, after Mercury died, Queen hasn’t played in big venues. The vocalist is the key part of the band. Adam is filling big shoes.
So take your armchair psychology to a different thread.
lauraspencer
@tenthplanet…you are obviously a young straight female Adam Lambert fan. Stick to posting on Adam’s website.
@Giancarlo85…so you think Adam Lambert brings more people to the concerts than Freddy Mercury’s legacy? Queen’s catalogue of songs? The original members of Queen?
Duran Duran, Kiss, Village People are all bands who have had replacements over the years and fans don’t turn up to see the replacements. They show up for the legacy of the band and the songs they grew up knowing and loving. Same goes for the Queen concerts. The majority of fans are there for Queen and not Adam.
So in this full circle moment, Adam is not only jumping on Smith’s coat tails, but also he is riding on the Queen’s coat tails.
Continue your griping at me. I have said all that I will say on this topic.
Go ahead and type another mean, nasty comment and get your last word which you so desperately need. I will say no more.
Night and here’s a big HUG for you. Have a better day tomorrow.
tenthplanet
@lauraspencer: Hmmm – telling someone to post elsewhere? Take your own advice and stop writing incoherent, uninformed book-length tirades on things you know nothing about. (You can’t even spell Freddie correctly – lol)
Giancarlo85
@lauraspencer: I never said Adam is bringing more people to the concerts than Mercury. I’m just saying Queen hasn’t had a suitable replacement for Mercury in years. You are reading into something that isn’t fucking there again. This is where I start to lose my patience with you.
Take your stupid holier than thou bullshit somewhere else. You clearly have no clue what you’re talking about. Freddy Mercury was a huge part of Queen. He was one where much of the creativity came from for the writing of songs. Adam is not jumping on anyones coattails, and he certainly isn’t riding on Sam Smith’s coat tails. You keep using that stupid analogy. It just makes you look like even more silly.
You silly little bitter queen. Have a good night.
Giancarlo85
@tenthplanet: I guess I’ll be corrected on that. Yes, the correct spelling is FREDDIE Mercury.
But Laura is a know-it-all and knows everything about all music. I’m so sick reading that stupid trolls incoherent jumbled shit posts. You should have seen what that troll left for me when I was commenting in an HIV thread. The stupid little troll went on a huge six paragraph tirade. Perhaps it suffers from aspergers.
Giancarlo85
I just don’t quite get how Adam is riding on Smith’s coattails though. Smith hasn’t done shit asides from a couple of hit songs… might be a two hit wonder. And yeah…
http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/the-juice/6281320/sam-smith-beyonce-karaoke
He’s not going to last long lying to his fans.
Avery Alvarez
@TemptyK: Actually, many of Adam Lambert’s songs directly use “he”, “his”, and “him” when referring to his love interest, while occasionally using “you”.
tenthplanet
@Giancarlo85: In addition, Smith had to pay Tom Petty royalties because “Stay With Me” was a rip-off of Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.” Pathetic.
liliane
@lauraspencer: You don’t seem to know much about Adam Lambert and are talking out of sheer ignorance. Adam does not need to ride on anyone coattails, his talent and the respect his peers have for him speak by themselves. Look up what his fellow artists have to say about his voice. There is also a reason why his voice has been insured for 48 million dollars, that Brian May and Roger Taylor ASKED him to front Queen on their worldwide tour and that their arena concerts have sold out everywhere. You talk as if it is very easy to sing Queen songs and that anybody can step into Freddie’s shoes.Yes, a lot of people went to the concert only for Queen but most came out with a newfound appreciation for Adam’s talent. Just look at the overwhelming positive reviews of the tour by both critics and fans. I should know, I went to the concert and it was the best concert I have ever attended and Adam’s vocal talent and stage presence are second to none. And looking at reviews of the concert, I am not the only one who think so. Before Adam, Queen toured with Paul Rogers and the tour was nowhere as successful as Queen + Adam. So no, Adam does not need to ride on Queen’s coattails either. It is an amazing collaboration and to make it work the way it did, both Queen and Adam needed each other just like Freddie needed Brian and Roger and vice versa.
Sam Smith seems to be the man of the hour. I do like him. I like some of his songs, think he has a really soulful voice and is a pretty good live performer but he is nowhere as exciting, versatile or creative as Adam. Yes, Sam won all those Grammys but just thought that the whole Tom Petty plagiarism kind of tainted those wins. He is also canceling a lot of concerts lately. Hopefully he is ok. It would be interesting to see where he will be in 6 years.
Adam, on the other hand, is a once-in-a-generation type of talent and just because the world could not look past his “in your face sexuality” and “no bullshit” attitude to see that, is not his fault. Talent could be delayed but never denied. Adam is both a really special artist and person and I hope the world catches up soon.
tenthplanet
@tenthplanet: P.S. Not only did SS rip off Petty, but SS and Petty came to a resolution way before the Grammys, but the info didn’t come out until after the Grammys – wonder why –
Giancarlo85
@tenthplanet: That I didn’t know. Sam Smith has a good voice, but seems to be lacking in the creativity department. Lambert has a great voice and is quite creative.
Lilane, yes you are right about Queen and Paul Rogers… and Adam Lambert. Lambert and Queen are working together… and nobody is riding on anyones coattails (I hate that expression). People were stunned by how Lambert did so well in those shoes.
Anyways, the agreement Petty had with Smith was quite steep… it seems to me Smith knew he would not prevail in court. Probably good foresight considering how Robin Thicke lost in a court case of similar nature.
http://consequenceofsound.net/2015/01/tom-petty-awarded-songwriting-royalties-for-sam-smiths-stay-with-me/
All of this makes me think… do certain new artists actually come up with their own material?
Jacob23
It’s sad the way he so casually denigrates his own manhood as well as the manhood of another gay man. He does it so unthinkingly, which shows that the guy has seen himself as less than a man for a long time. Guys, if you are ever on a date and the guy starts referring to himself as gurl or some other female word, just pay the check and get out of there.
Giancarlo85
@Jacob23: It’s so sad the way you denigrate other gay people for not trying to fit into your standards of gay men. You probably don’t even meet any form of masculinity and you’re probably a mental case who is deep in the closet. It’s easy for someone as screwed up as you, to criticize other gay men for what they say.
And you are talking about dating? Have you ever been on a date? Ever? I suppose with your wretched attitude and nasty looks, a guy would be running out the door.
tenthplanet
@Jacob23: In the gay community, that’s not considered a slur – gays have their own references and call each other “colorful” names, including “gurl” – definitely not a reflection on anyone’s “manhood.” Your ignorance is showing.
Jacob23
@tenthplanet: It is a self-slur. And of course it is intended to undermine a gay man’s sense of manhood. That’s the whole point of using an array of female-oriented words (gurl, girlfriend, miss, she, her, etc.) – to make gay men internalize the idea that, in order to be gay, you have to accept that you are sort of a woman. If it had nothing to do with manhood, we would use other colorful names that had no gender connotation.
tenthplanet
@Jacob23: Self-slur? lol – you simply don’t know what you’re talking about. You think Lambert’s “insulting” himself? And that he’s trying to internalize that he’s “sort of a woman.” A male gay is not less of a male because he prefers sex with men rather than women – and the use of “gurl” and other words among gays is more of fellowship, group identity, and just having fun – the way straight guys in a locker room call each other unmentionable names. Get real.
Giancarlo85
@Jacob23: Manhood this, manhood that. You’re an ignorant idiot. I’m androgynous… am I less of a “man” than you are? Am I less of a person than you are? You two faced shit… nobody cares what you think of other gay people. You aren’t even out of the closet and you have the nerve to criticize other gay men?
“Gurl” is a term used (even by myself sometimes) to indicate solidarity and identity (as tenthplanet has said). This doesn’t undermine a gay man’s “sense of manhood”. And who the fuck are you to speak for others anyways?
And keep ignoring me all you want. I’ll keep calling you out for your shit.
Giancarlo85
I just get so amused when some gay men on here find the need to put down feminine gay men and say they don’t have any real “manhood”.
I’m so sick of seeing this judgmental shit. You have NO RIGHT to talk to ANYONE like that. Hypocritical little cowards… you would never tell an effeminate or androgynous gay man that to their face, and you certainly would tell a trans person that either. Continue hiding behind the computer screens.

@tenthplanet: Straight guys call each other names in the locker room as a way to build comraderie. If they refer to another dude as a woman, that is considered an insult, not a friendship-building move. If Lambert wanted to strengthen bonds with Sam Smith or any other gay man, he could call him dude, friend, buddy, or any of 1000 other words. He picks feminine words because, as you correctly point out, that is how is how it has been done for a long time. It’s a hold over from the early 20th century, a bad time when gay men had no respect for themselves.

@Jacob23: You don’t know anything about that at all. And no, calling someone “gurl” isn’t calling them a woman. But is being a woman an insult? Are you really this backwards and stupid? “Dude or buddy”? What year is it? 1950? You have such an utter hatred of feminine men. It’s well noted. You are the one with no respect for yourself.
