Afternoon Aural: Andrew Gold

Did you know that Andrew Gold wrote and sang The Golden Girls theme “Thank You For Being A Friend”? We didn’t either – not until about five minutes ago, anyway. Here’s Gold with his original version of the iconic song. It’s longer than the sitcom’s intro, but just as cheesy.

After he jump: “Lonely Boy”…

I have friends that swear that Andrew Gold ‘ripped off the Golden Girls song.’ I was listening to that song long before that horrible show. (I had an X that loved it – maybe that’s one of the reasons why he’s an X.) Anyway, while not as big a hit, I liked Lonely Boy best.

So, Andrew Gold is gay then? Or you wouldn’t've played his videos? Is that how it works?

Guys, Andrew Gold recorded this looooong before “The Golden Girls” aired. I had the 45 given to me by a friend when I was young myself.

Like many TV themes, it was pared down and re-recorded with a cheezy style.

(On a related note, the themes to “Mission Impossible”–which was written as a jazz riff–”I Dream of Jeannie”, and “The Munsters” all originally had lyrics before their televised remakes.
