Afternoon Aural: Bettye Lavette

American singer Bettye Lavette may not be as famous as some of her Motown colleagues, but she’s just as talented, soulful and noteworthy. Here’s the Michigan native singing “Let Me Down Easy” and “Surrender,” which many of your may recognize as a Diana Ross classic.

PS: Are we the only ones picking up a lezzie vibe?

Wow – I have never heard of her until today. She sounds FIERCE! And yes, she’s just about one flannel shirt away from Dyke City.

“Dyke City?” I don’t understand that! Bettye LaVette is feminine AND tough — hell, she’s from Detroit! David, please do NOT miss Bettye if she comes near your city. She’s the most dynamic female stage performer on the circuit today. Check out this London performance at YouTube:

After her shows, practically the entire audience files back to meet her. She’s youthful, gracious, warm and witty. Plus, if you have your camera, she’s happy to pose with you.

On her show: you’ll be happy you decided to attend.
