Afternoon Aural: Empire of the Sun

When we first saw Empire of the Sun perform we thought that maybe the Radical Faeries had started up a pop outfit, but these guys aren't faeries, they're Australian. Walking on a Dream" is their big hit at the moment and fully embraces the current Oz 80's synth pop sound that we here at Queerty keep telling you is the next big thing.

i really don't mind this song. nice work. video's cool.

one thing: a lot of this 80s synth pop stuff is too treble. a little bass would really help this track. pyramid sound, peeps.

Love the Oz scene

Have you seen/heard these yet?

The Presets - This Boy's In Love - slightly homoerotic video-clip too

Pnau - Embrace

Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars

Muscles - Ice Cream

Van She - Kelly

Personally, I think thought this was horrible. Bad Fischer-Spooner retread. But they were on the BBC's list of big new acts for 2009, so I guess we're doomed.

@Eminent Victorian: Yeah, we saw that too. Also, Frankmusik, Little Boots and La Roux, which have all be Morning or Afternoon Aural's recently. I dunno how Casey Spooner would feel knowing you think Empire of the Sun sounds like him though :)

@Eminent Victorian: Also, apologies for the wholly unnecessary editorial "we". Just a habit.

I didn't care much for the song, but the filming in Shanghai and Hmong jewelry are cool.

Of course "The City" had to co-opt everything that is good in life; "Walking on a Dream" was sampled in this week's episode. But good exposure for these guys.

They've got two more tracks on their MySpace page:

I love this Empire of The Sun song and all the great stuff coming out of OZ.
I think it's super. I need more of this kinda stuff.

Have you seen or heard of SSION. They are from Kansas and another big favorite.
I feel like these are my children. And I am proud.
