Afternoon Aural: Joe Jackson

A few weeks ago we noted that Swedish band Pacific!'s "Number One" reminded us of an unknown eighties song. This is it: Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out," a song we loved without even realizing it!

OMG,

I was like 12 again for 3 1/2 minutes. I remember watching this video and wishing I was a rich bitch living on Park Ave.

Does it still count if it's Park Ave. South?

Oh and not as many coins as I'd hoped for.

I always loved this song.

Joe Jackson is one of the unsung (pun not intended) greats of 80's music along with Graham Parker and Edwyn Collins.

Amazing British band Hot CHip just remixed this song. I love it!

Thanks for teaching me what Joe Jackson looks like. All I could think before of was a bearish black guy with a 'fro beating his kids.

Joe Jackson is brilliant. I'm not sure if he's gay or not, but even before pioneers like Bronski Beat he was performing songs in the early '80s that celebrated gay culture and love. Real Men in particular is beautiful, haunting and empowering. I remember listening to it while coming out in college. Here's link to a recent performance of it by Jackson: http://video.google.com/videos.....amp;tab=wv

What happened to feel good songs like this any ways? Everything now is so assulating, agressive, combative and ugly. Blech!

A rare song that could easily be muzak (and I think I do hear it at the supermarket a lot) and yet is really, really good! JJ is currently touring the USA. Saw him in DC a couple weeks ago. Grey hair, same voice, still cool as hell.
