Afternoon Aural: Marva Whitney

Born Marva Ann Manning, funk singer Marva Whitney got her start singing gospel with her traveling kin, The Manning Family. After breaking away from the family tree, Whitney joined forces with James Brown to churn out some hot hits. While we love Mr. Brown, we’d like to feature some of Whitney’s solo performances: “Your Love Was Good For Me”, “Things Got To Get Better” and her version of Etta James’ “Tell Mama”.
