Afternoon Aural: Natasha Bedingfield

https://youtu.be/HaXhxBLF7fo
Natasha Bedingfield may only be 25-years old, but she sort of looks like she’s forty. And sings like it, too. In this track – the forthright “I Wanna Have Your Babies” – the blond Brit lets the kiddie kittie out of the bag. Her vagina’s ready and willing, but she dare not say anything lest she’s dating a scaredy cat.

Men and women all over England must sympathize, because the single has reached number seven on UK’s pop charts. And, as Sasha Frere-Jones notes in this week’s New Yorker, the tigress’ tune gets loads (pardon) of radio play. He also writes:

Bedingfield is not singing about the recreational aspects of procreation, but the emotional need to have a child. In an age of unlimited lasciviousness, this song is possibly the freakiest thing on pop radio right now.

True.

Can you imagine all the little teenie-boppers singing this to their middle-school crushes? Even scarier: the thought that that demographic will soon have the ability (if they don’t already) to act on the song’s sentiment. If that happens, they’ll be a baby boom unlike that of post World War II. Natasha Bedingfield, we hold you personally responsible for any possible escalation in over-population.

We will give you kudos, however, on your catchy little diddy. It may be disturbing, but it got our foot a-tapping. Among other things. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about getting anyone pregers…
