Afternoon Aural: Nirvana

Let’s all get in touch with our teen angst and Kurt Cobain fantasies with some Nirvana. First up – sniff, sniff – “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. After the jump: “Come As You Are,” their Unplugged cover of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” as well as “Lake of Fire” from that same performance.

Oh, lordie. Lake of Fire is one of the worst songs on Unplugged. If you’re trying to be semi-originial, I would tap School, Pay to Play, Jesus Don’t Want Me For A Sunbeam, or Sappy. And If You Must is one of their underrated songs.

Kurt Cobain was so fucking great, and his promotion of the Meat Puppets (Lake of Fire) is proof; agreed with no. 1 that it’s kind of a sucky version, but basically it’s Kurt saying to the Kirkwood brothers: “you guys were heroes to me, I’m going to set you up for life.” (Thanks to the royalty checks.)
