Afternoon Aural: Portishead

We’ve waited over a decade for this moment: a new Portishead album! Beth, Geoff and Adrian are back in the mix with their fourth studio album, Third, which takes us down a darker than their previous, self-titled full-length. This track’s called “Machine Gun” and pits gossamer lyrics against sinister beats to produce an intoxicating – if not jarring – mix.

We’ve included “The Rip” after the jump. It’s not as industrial and harks back to Portishead’s historical sound.

Oddly enough, Third is their third studio album, not their fourth!

I wondered how a band like Portishead that, to me, sounds so perfectly like the 1990′s, would sound these days. I’m not thrilled by the first clip but ‘Dummy’ will certainly have a long life even if they never made another album. I loved the second clip, though.
