Alan Cumming, Foreskin Advocate

I was saddened to hear that President Clinton and Bill Gates made statements last week at the AIDS conference in Vienna strongly advocating circumcision as a preventitive [sic] measure in the fight against HIV/AIDS, citing ‘overwhelming evidence’ that it works and saves lives. Of course, the word ‘might’ being used in the same sentence as an exhortation to genitally mutilate on a mass scale should perhaps ring alarm bells. It certainly does mine, and reports such as this one make me wary. I have been looking at a lot of material online about this issue, here for instance and have been gratified to see that the issue has made it into the comic books, and as well as being entertaining, Foreskin Man highlights the politics and lack of objectivity in the reports and studies that advocate hacking off genitals above education on safe sex and more money for research and drugs.

You know what works better at preventing HIV infection than cutting off bits of your penis that you’ll never get back?

      CONDOMS! It’s that simple!

I’m beginning to suspect there’s a deeper psychological motive for these people to advocate circumcision when there are cheaper, easier, less drastic, and more effective methods out there. Maybe they feel that since they were mutilated that everyone else should be too. It sickens and saddens me.

When will those disgustingly perverse Christians FINALLY stop having a say in destroying children’s lives? At birth they want to mutilate boys bodies through circumcision, through childhood they want to rape them, and as teens and young adults they want to destroy any sense of positivity and self-confidense that a gay man may have about themselves, driving them to either suicide or a life of ‘down-low’ misery.

Christians are SICK, PERVERTED, SELF-LOATHING, HATE-MONGERING BASTARDS – and the circumcisian’s that they advocate for children is GENITAL MUTILIATION of the beautiful male body and denies that child increased sexual sensitivity when they reach adolescense and adulthood.

      Let’s examine this logic.
AIDS kills, and circumcised men in some areas of the world are less likely to get AIDS, therefore circumcising all men will cause fewer men to die of AIDS.
Now let us compare this logic to another disease… breast cancer.
Removal of all breast tissue would prevent 99% of all breast cancers. Breast Cancer is a far bigger killer of women than AIDS or penile cancer is of men. Would Mr. Clinton or Mr. Gates advocate double mastectomies on all women and men as a preventative in order to save lives?
      I would think NOT!
Yet full double mastectomies would save hundreds of thousands of lives.

While you’re right to draw attention to a double standard, the truth is that the studies drawing the circumcision/HIV link are deeply flawed and their conclusions are suspect.

I’m tired of such stupid animosity towards stuff like this. Using the word “mutilation” is applicable to getting piercings and earnings as well. You are mutilating your ears when you impale things in them.

How much harm is circumcision REALLY causing? How many people have died of it? How many people have had serious trauma as a result of circumcision? Why don’t you ask THEM, and not yourselves.

I’m cut, and I’m perfectly fine with it. I don’t care about sensitivity as the most important sexual organ is my brain, not my penis. In fact, I’m glad I last longer. When I last longer, so does the intimacy between me and my partner.

My cousin had a baby boy last year and asked me beforehand if she should get him circumcised, and I recommended that she do it.

This “mutilation” nonsense is just an attempt to by anti-circumcision zealots to throw as much shade against it as they possible can. A man whose had his arm blown off in artillery has been mutilated…a man with a circumcised penis has had a COSMETIC alternation. There is a difference. A circumcised penis is no more “mutilated” than a pierced ear.

Next people will be trying to argue against a parent having the end of their children’s tongues clipped to halt speech impediment. “Nevermind his sounding like Elmer Fudd, let him have that little extra piece of his tongue…then when he’s grown, he can decide whether or not he wants to get rid of it.” Yeah, okay.

      That being said…

Uncut penises, IMO, look like anteaters — like fucking pigs in blankets…or those snausages treats you give to dogs. If that’s “hot” to you, then have at it. Plus they tend to stink, don’t age well and I heard about that dick “cheese” that grows in those little crevices (just the thought is completely nauseating.) Not interested in that, thanks. Give me a clean, hygienic circumcised penis any day of the damn week. :)

Just how is circumcision on males mutilation?

      mulitation, via wiktionary:

      # To physically harm as to impair use, notably by cutting off or otherwise disabling a vital part, such as a limb.
      # To destroy beyond recognition.

pretty sure the only people who are going to call it genital mutilation are those who are uncut themselves and feel the need to feel superior about themselves.

@Adam, another dictionary offerers this definition for MUTILATE

inflict a violent and disfiguring injury on : the leg was badly mutilated | [as adj. ]

      ( mutilated) mutilated bodies.

      • inflict serious damage on : the 14th-century church had been partly mutilated in the 18th century.

That seems to me to be a fair definition of a cut cock.

@Ian: With all the stereotypes thrown at the gay community over the years, I don’t think we are in any position to start throwing them at others. Also, the Jewish people taught circumcision way before the Christian religion did, and the Bible doesn’t really touch on circumcision for Christian people that do not have a Jewish background. Also, circumcision has long been thought of to be more healthy and more sanitary (which it actually is in many cases). The medical community has done much more in regards to pushing for circumcision than religion ever has, so this it not even remotely a religious issue.

@Doug Lucas: Many women with a family history of breast cancer which pretty much predisposes that they will get breast cancer already have double mastectomies as a preventative measure because they are more at risk. Since men in general are more at risk to get HIV/AIDS than females and HIV/AIDS can not be cured while breast cancer can, I would think that the logical decision would be to do whatever it takes to reduce the risks.

From comments above, it appears that many Queerty guys believe that one result of millions of years of evolution of the human male is that immediately at birth, they all need surgery?

@Adam: “Removal of a small bit of skin is inflicting serious damage, even though it doesn’t affect its usage…”

Removal of the only moving part, 15 sq in (~100cm^2) of skin (hardly “small”) ~20,000 specialised nerves, the dartos muscle and a unique rolling action, DOES affect its usage, even if you’ve never known what it was like to have it all.

@Jones: “He can keep his foreskin for all I care.”

That’s exactly what he and the vast majority of intact men will do, and that’s all we want for every baby boy who’s ever born. There’s no reason cutting parts off should be “a parental choice” at all.

      @Mr Enemabag Jones: ”
A recent Malaysian study showed that 62% of the men who were HIV+, were Muslim. Muslims circumcise their boys.”

Actually, it’s 72@ of men who were HIV+ were Muslim, while only 60@ of the population in general is Muslim, and Muslims circumcise their boys while none of the other major social groups in Malaysia do. And that’s only a population comparison: on an individucal basis, in at least six African countries, more of the circumcised men have HIV than the intact. Until that is explained, cutting men and boys to prevent HIV is madness.

We sometimes forget that in the American AIDS crisis of the 1980s, when gays were dropping dead from the brand new disease, around 90% of the victims were circumcised.

So how will circumcision prevent AIDS in the U.S.? If someone knows, I’ll be happy to listen to what you have to say.

      Acem.

Uncut penises, IMO, look like anteaters — like pigs in blankets…or those snausages treats you give to dogs. :)

      Giovannidude, the AIDS crises continues.

It was not limited to the 1980’s.
A lifetime on antivirals and other meds is no picnic for guys with HIV. There are early reports of nasty long term effects from the constant antiviral drug use.

All this being said, I think that in the USA, there are much better ways to prevent AIDS than by circumcision. Probably the great majority of US gay male AIDS related deaths have been circumcised guys. Small hidden ulcerations under the foreskin are a mode of infection and transmission. Condom use, know your partner, more oral sex, and booze moderation are all great practices to reduce the chances of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Don’t use “club drugs”. Repeated non HIV infections make some guys more vulnerable to contracting HIV.

Well, I am one circumcised guy who appreciates foreskin. I wish my parents had kept their grubby hands off my pecker (figuratively speaking, that is). I dislike being circumcised so much that I am restoring my foreskin. My partner and I really enjoy my extra skin. I can only imagine what it would have been like if I had been left natural.

There is not one national medical association on earth (not even Isreal’s) endorsing routine circumcision. Most of the world is intact and doing just fine with all their pleasure-receptive parts.

      Foreskin feels REALLY good.

@Mr. Enemabag Jones: Actually women are at a greater risk than men are and male circumcision raises the risk of women contracting HIV by around 54% which also increases the risk of more children being infected by their mothers through the umbilical cord because their is a greater chance their mother will be infected with the virus therefore even if male circumcision protected men it still wouldn’t slow the spread of the virus.

The US has the 2nd highest circ rate (after Israel), yet has the 2nd highest HIV/AIDS rate (after Africa). Meanwhile, Scandinavian
countries, like Finland, where MGM (male genital mutilation) is
ILLEGAL! have a near-ZERO (0)% circ rate, yet have some
of THE lowest HIV/AIDS rates globally. Other European countries
      follow.

“I’m tired of such stupid animosity towards stuff like this. ”
Using the word “mutilation” is applicable to getting piercings and earnings as well. You are mutilating your ears when you impale things through them.”

It’s true. Tattoos and prince alberts would be mutilation as well. However, notice that not all of these can be done to a child without any ramifications. Notice that doctors aren’t performing tattoos and prince alberts to prevent AIDS.

No one has any animosity towards a man choosing to get circumcised. But the fact is that this is inflicted on healthy children who do not have a choice. If you like your piercing, if you like your tattoo, if you like being circumcised, fine. It’s still f*ed up to do to a child.

“How much harm is circumcision REALLY causing? How many people have died of it? How many people have had serious trauma as a result of circumcision? Why don’t you ask THEM, and not yourselves.”

If reports are correct, at least 117 children die a year due to circumcision. These numbers are conservative because doctors who want to keep their reputations and keep making money from this often attribute the death to something else, such as “hemmoraging” or “septic shock.”

How much harm is circumcision REALLY causing? Circumcision causes harm in every single case. But just as women get over their circumcisions, so do men. The resilience of the human spirit is no excuse to mutilate someone. How many people have had serious trauma as a result of circumcision? Quite a few men resent being circumcised, though somehow I don’t think you care to know.

“I’m cut, and I’m perfectly fine with it. I don’t care about sensitivity as the most important sexual organ is my brain, not my d***. In fact, I’m glad I last longer. When I last longer, so does the intimacy between me and my partner.”

Sounds like you’re trying to compensate. Get back to me in a few years when you take forever to climax and your partner is giving you the tap.

People do just fine without their eyes. They learn to use a walking stick and learn to read braile, just like cut guys learn to use other parts of their body for stimulation and learn to use lube.

Just because people can get on fine after suffering a deliberate assault on their bodies is no excuse to do this to children.

If a man wants to get circumcised it should be HIS CHOICE ALONE TO MAKE.

Circumcision doesn’t prevent HIV in Cameroon, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, and Swaziland, not to mention Israel and America.

The rate of circumcised men in this country was at 90% during the 1980s, when the HIV/AIDS epidemic hit. It is still at about 80%, and yet we still manage to have the highest rate of HIV transmission in the industrialized world. Some cities, such as Philadelphia and Washington DC rival hotspots in Africa.

“Researchers” and circumcision pundits can make all the claims and “studies” they want, however they fail to correlate with reality.

On July 7th this year, Malaysian AIDS Council vice-president Datuk Zaman Khan announced that than 70% of the 87,710 HIV/AIDS sufferers in the country are Muslims (all Muslim men are circumcised). The Muslim population accounts for 70% of the incidence of HIV, but only 60% of the population, which would mean that HIV is spreading at a much higher rate in the Muslim population, where all men are circumcised.

Let’s have “studies” explain this one.

Cumming is right on the money. Circumcision doesn’t do diddly-squat to protect anyone. The procedure costs money in and of itself, but it’s going cost even MORE money, because promoting circumcision as HIV “prevention” is already causing men to become complacent about condom use. The Wawer study showed that women in Africa were 50% more likely to contract HIV from a circumcised partner. As men use less condoms they will get infected and infect others, resulting in more HIV cases on which money for drugs will have to be spent on.

Promoting circumcision is the biggest disservice to the fight against HIV. What a waste of precious funds.

Hurrah Alan. Thanks for all of your support.

It’s important that we not argue with the victims here who slag off the Brits, and support child abuse. They know not of what they think. They are living in their heads and not their hearts. We could feel sorry for them in the fact that they are damaged people who need love and understanding. Deep down, they know that male genital mutilation is wrong. We have to realise their denial, a common symptom of the sexually abused used to validate the cycle of future abuse, and psychologically justify it.

@Lee: It isn’t really known how many babies die each year from “circumcision”, but the truth is they have, do, and will die. This issue isn’t just about the adult victims, it’s about the big picture concerning the corrupt nature of “circumcision” itself. It’s about preserving the choice of the men that babies will become. It’s about exposing the fact that interns learn this procedure not on dead babies, but on live ones. They often make mistakes some of which cannot be corrected. Each time a parent allows this, regardless of having been informed or not, another person is going to grow up a potential enabler of “circumcision”. That’s how the quack doctors who do this stay in business.

If any of the naysayers here are to actually see an infant being tortured during the travesty, they might change their minds. If not, there is something wrong with them. Can’t they think of anything other than their own feelings and consider those of others? Since “circumcision” can’t really be reversed, we need leave the penis as formed. That person, not object, may want to keep it just that way regardless as to how it makes anyone feel. The intact penis has been around in the majority for thousands of years, and it will be in the majority long after the naysayers are gone.

@@Acem.: : You know you call it just a cosmetic procedure but its not it is mutilation and the source for this fact is simple the world health organization and many countries consider even a single pin prick of a girl’s genitals to bring a single drop to blood to be female genital mutilation and since male circumcision is the tearing away of the foreskin from the glans because they are fused, along with the crushing of the foreskin and the cutting away of the foreskin it is very clear by using logic that male circumcision for non-medically justifiable reason is also mutilation.

Also by saying “Uncut penises, IMO, look like anteaters — like fucking pigs in blankets…or those snausages treats you give to dogs. :)” you indicate very clearly you don’t care about children’s human rights to freedom of harm, or body integrity or doing what is right because you did the complete opposite when you urged your sister to have your nephew sexually tortured and mutilated.

I would love to also know what is the difference between you and pedophile hmmm because you sure do share a lot of the same traits like justifying hurting children who don’t deserve to be hurt.

@Acem: your post is completely ignorant. a ‘cosmetic alteration’? that’s such propaganda. it IS a mutilation because you’re taking a natural body part and hacking off skin. furthermore, uncut dicks can stink yes but out of all the dicks ive had, CUT dicks smell pretty badly as well IF THEY ARE NOT WASHED. perhaps u should actually know what you’re talking about before you just start running your mouth.

I agree that the regulation seems silly; it’s been proven that circumcision doesn’t effectively prevent the spread of STI’s. Of course Alan Cumming would be the first person to speak out against it, lol. He also helped compose a music video about same-sex marriages recently. I located this vid on OURscene’s site, in case any of you guys are interested: http://ourscenetv.com/posts/463/i-do-with-an-introduction-by-alan-cumming
