Alan Cumming Wrote a Love Song to His Boyfriend About Blacking Out

Last night, actor Alan Cumming removed a leather suit jacket to reveal a sparkly sleeveless number, and a pair of surprisingly toned arms. He was standing on stage at The Box, the dark Chrystie Street den of iniquity on New York City’s Lower East Side, where the famous and their followers come to disappear. Alan was there, in a private gathering, to perform. Songs. From his new debut record, I Bought a Blue Car Today, which pretty girls held above the crowd’s heads after the performance, offering the records for sale. Alan sang the original number “Next to Me,” dedicated to his husband Grant Shaffer, about how he knows everything is all right the morning after, even when he drinks to excess, because he wakes up next his lover. Grant watched from the balcony above. Touching. Alan covered Hedwig and the Angry Inch‘s “Wig in a Box,” a special honor, given John Cameron Mitchell was in the audience, flirting with cute boys. And there was the lovely, harsh rendition of “Mein Herr,” not to be confused with the shampoo Alan is supposedly coming out with, Cumming In Your Hair.
