La’Porsha, La’Porsha, La’Porsha. You in danger, girl. Your comments about LGBT people just screwed up a major source of income for singers like you, and we assure you — you’ll regret them.
You got what we call “caught up” without a publicist, and some reporter asked you a question that dug you into a homophobic hole that no amount of backtracking or periscope apologies can get you out of. Your remarks regarding your home state’s anti-LGBT law came off as condescending at best and homophobic at worst:
“This is how I feel about the LGBT community: They are people just like us. They’re not animals as someone stated before. They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect. Everybody is a human being. We should be able to coexist with one another.”
We’re not animals! You don’t agree with our “particular lifestyle!” Um…thanks? LaPorsha, my sexual orientation is not a “lifestyle,” nor is it is something that is presented and lived for your judgment.
As a black gay man I personally detest the comparison of homophobia to racism whenever a black celebrity says something homophobic (i.e. “as a black woman, she should know better”). It’s tired. That said, I need to point out the obvious correlation between her use of “animals” in a misguided expression of “tolerance” to LGBT people and the fact that the “animal” terminology has been used for centuries to dehumanize black people. Pot, meet kettle.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
In America, we’re free to believe whatever we want to believe. What I can’t believe is that in 2016 an American Idol runner-up would be stupid enough to say these things. Out loud. To reporters. Jennifer Hudson is somewhere doing a facepalm right now.
You stepped in it big time with this one, and we guarantee that the stink of these supremely ill-advised comments will waft around whatever career the music industry still affords round R&B divas with big voices these days. Someone should check in with Candice Glover and see how well winning American Idol worked out for her.
Condragulations, LaPorsha — every time you do an interview or step onto a set not only will you be asked about these comments, people who were somehow unaware of them will be notified of their existence. They will overshadow whatever you have to bring to the music industry. That’s not right or wrong, that’s just business, and in 2016 homophobia is bad for it. That sound you hear right now is of a million LGBT wallets snapping shut to whatever you have to offer in the future.
Want to trot out that new single during a pride event? Nope. Having your big album release party at a gay club where guys are just waiting to worship a new club diva? Not gonna happen. You say you want to do a surprise appearance at Dance On The Pier? Thanks, but no thanks.
You don’t need to worry about the LGBT community anymore, because we assure you that the support from this community (and the coins that come with it) are gone. We barely met you, but we’ve seen enough. Bye, La’Porsha.

Homophobia is unacceptable!
Victor Barry
Her opinion, while not in agreement with mine, is not worth all this complaining.
Reggie B. Lopez
Bye bye honey!!
Skot Skotnicki
She has Jesus.
Seth Ruimveld
I didn’t find her comment offensive, she said what a lot of religious people have difficulty saying, preaching acceptance and denouncing anything to the contrary is not homophobic. She did not call us animals, rather she denounced the person who called us animals. I respect her for not allowing her religion to interfere with her acceptance of all people.
Julian Rogers
I totally agree with you! Racism in our own community is a MUCH BIGGER problem. It’s embarrassing how our community can’t understand how formative years creates an individual and is so willing to dismiss a person over a single comment.
Jake Richardson
Thank you for your level headed comment. Our community needs to learn to think this way more often. Nit everybody needs to agree with everything we do. Not everyone needs to accept who we are. As long as they can be respectful of us and we of them, who cares what they believe about in church?
Amaurys Arias
Still bigotry.
Seth Ruimveld
I have yet to find anything in her statement that is bigoted. Like I said, I think it’s actually to the contrary. She acknowledges her religion, refuses to allow religion to be the reason for discrimination or bigotry and goes even further by not comparing us but stating we are all equal. The only statement she made that might be confusing is the part where she refers to our lifestyle. Our lifestyle is definitely different from our heterosexual equals, no more of a choice than theres is. Stating people don’t agree with it is a fact. I don’t think she was restricting all gay people to one lifestyle as every single gay persons lifestyle is unique, but the fact that we sleep with the same sex is the same regardless of your lifestyle. People disagree with it, they are the bigots and the homophobes. She in no way states she disagrees with it.
Amaurys Arias
Seth Ruimveld Religion is not an excuse for bigotry… Hope you understand that someday.
Seth Ruimveld
Amaurys Arias Ignorance is not an excuse for bigotry… Hope you learn to read someday
Craig Bankert
Saying “I don’t agree with your lifestyle” is offensive at its core. It implies that being gay is a choice and something that is up for judgment. Neither is true. I for one am quite tired of black people, who should be sensitive to bigotry, being so damn ignorant and insensitive.
Seth Ruimveld
But she never said she didn’t agree with our lifestyle. She said not everyone would agree with it, but never said she didn’t. Was lifestyle poor word choice? I guess it was because of how sensitive some people are, to the point where they can’t even acknowledge the difference between the life of a straight person and a gay person.
Liam Barnes
What’s funny is that the journalist who initial asked about the bill was satisfied with her first statement about not knowing much about it, and going on to talk about the Confederate flag issue. La’Prosha herself decided to go back and further talk about the LGBT thing, yet here she is now claiming she was caught off guard. No, girl, you were just wanting to make sure all your godfearin’ fans understood that you weren’t a supporter of gay rights.
Caine
oh c’mon her comments are not worth the wrath you are giving her… i was surprised by the “HEADLINE” of the comment but the actual comment itself. Not so much.
Neville Grandblanc
That backlash is so strange. She said Lifestyle and then she’s the devil.. Calm down people !
Steven Lull
Stupid business decision. Good luck with your short-lived Diva Career.
Bromancer7
Don’t hold back, gay black man Rob Smith…tell us how you really feel.
Xzamilio
I feel you, Rob, but cut the nonsense. Regardless of what she said, her singing career ain’t going’t nowhere’t. American Idol hasn’t produce a hit singer in a long damn time. Maybe a “niche” one with Phillip Phillips, but this condescending woman and the other guy who won (both are from Mississippi like me and that’s where the pride for that state ends) aren’t going to do jack.
Alistair Wiseman
Rob Smith of Queerty, stop trying to speak for the whole gay community.
It is quite sad that we went from a community wanting tolerance to a community demanding endorsement.
oregonduckbrad
Disagree. Words DO matter, and the author of the post has some really valid points. In support of our community, I’ve always said that we always have the opportunity to vote for success with our dollars. This woman, to me, really stepped in it, and she should be admonished appropriately for it. I don’t really feel we should just let it slide, particularly when comparing us to animals (?!?). At the very least, this could be a teachable moment for her. People in our community viewing how this unfolds deserve basic human respect–and should not just “let it slide”.
robho3
Wtf I didn’t find her comment at all bad — she said gay people WERENT animals and seemed to be defending gays. I think the person that wrote this about here is a little to sensitive and maybe just looking for something to complain about. Plus I don’t even know who the hell this woman is.
Chris Duffy
Showered, paid some bills online, bought dog food, then went to Home Depot. Exactly what religion condemns that ‘lifestyle’?
John Kuehnle
I don’t think this discission or debate will ever end. People are who they are.
Chris Duffy
Actually, in my world this discussion IS over. Was a long time ago. American Idol is nothing more than a ‘lifestyle’ of glorified karaoke anyway.
Benet Leigh
Chris Duffy – lol!
Korree Johnson
I’m sure that she thinks that her statement was a compliment to the gay community, WRONG, Being gay is not a lifestyle, it’s who we are, and to “not approve” of the “gay lifestyle” is basically saying that you don’t approve of us, and there is nothing loving about that. She needs to go back to the drawing board and educate herself before she opens her mouth.
Jake Richardson
I think you are looking for something to be offended over
Korree Johnson
No, I’m not. Being gay is not a lifestyle choice, it’s a life. Her comments belittle what being gay means and spread ignorant ideas about what being gay really is. You don’t have to agree with me, but don’t belittle my being offended.
Will Mcnamara
Ummm I didn’t think her statement was derogatory at all…
Will Mcnamara
Did anyone read her quote or just comment based on the headline? She said nothing offensive about LGBT. The journalist is fueling a fire that doesn’t even exist.. Smh.
Mike Johnson
onthemark
“They’re not animals as someone stated before.”
Uh… what’s wrong with that? She was quoting “someone” and disagreeing with them.
And by the way, we ARE animals. Darwin said so. Take a fucking science class.
sfbeast
Rob Smith: thanks for calling her out on her inappropriate thoughts and comments. And as you say, it’s nothing new. Obviously, since many of us chose to be gay, I’m guessing LaPorscha also chose to be black. Let’s give her a chance and see if she learns something from the public and those around her. She certainly has a knockout voice and maybe she’ll change.
AJ Beu
Must be a really slow news day.
Gio Ortiz
Bye Felicia! Thank you for letting us know now before we invest any of our $$ on you.

@Will Mcnamara: Don’t know about you but I was born gay. It was not a lifestyle choice. Straight Bigots need to get that into there thick skulls. Gay people who think that thinking is okay , you better check yourself.

fucking people arent happy unless your whining about something. She didnt put us down said she wasnt for that lifestyle but we arent for the hetero life style so 2 wrongs dont make a right and noone tells me what i can buy and cant buy. I love her voice and if she releases a cd ill be one of the first to buy it.Dont like it bitch then condem me.I have balls I can take itr
Matthew Farris
Does she not know the trajectory of the American Idol non-winner? Gay cruises, gay pride, gay clubs and then VFW Hall bingo night.
Mike Johnson
don’t get it twisted look for it should be same people complaining about the little stuff you said this isn’t very will call the other Black and Hispanic and Chinese and other people of color Niger all the other and words in her riffic words and more I don’t use them but other people say wasn’t complaining about you
Day Woken
Sometimes taken and ignorance can coexist really well together… 🙁
Eclatant
I think you need to reread/rehear the statement for comprehension.
You take issue with someone saying gays are not animals, apparently in rebuke of a statement someone else has said (her words, “They’re not animals AS SOMEONE STATED BEFORE [emphasis mine]”)? Well, we’re not.
You’re upset that she states the well-known fact that some (a few? many?) people don’t agree with the gay lifestyle based on religious or other equally silly reasons? Well, they do. That’s not news.
Both of those non-problematic statements — which won’t affect her career one way or the other precisely because they were so non-problematic — were couched in the idea that everyone should be treated with respect. Not a bad idea for most people (non-Trump supporters, anyway).
Maybe you’re upset about something else and just decided to channel it at the Black lady with the big hair? Otherwise, you’ve kicked up a lot of sand for no reason at all.
Shame on Queerty for even considering this as a “Top Story.”
Georgie Land
Always a bad career move for aspiring Divas to diss on the community from which they would get their fame and appreciation. Ignorant cow!
Derik Dill
Again, let’s stop playing the victims and realize she has a voice also . It’s her opinion. I have mine and she has her’s . I don’t agree with with everyone on certain issues. So let’s stop playing the victim and let’s start changing the opinions in a positive way instead of attacking. Cause once we start attacking we our no better then the other person. Queerty

Lifestyle?! HONEY! That frizzy doo is a lifestyle. Being gay is an orientation. How about you orientate that doo?
Daniepwils
I am going to chalk this up to just not knowing. Some people live sheltered lives and I think that this is the case here. I don’t think she is homophobic or has anything against gays. She just doesn’t know…
Celtic
When such is the case, one is best to opine to oneself and not shout out to the world with ill-founded and ill-fated opinion.
Poodleonmaui
As a gay man, I find your condemnation of La’Porsha unfortunate (to put it mildly). I think she demonstrated a great deal of poise and positivity on Idol. She appears to have had a hard life and she may not be a sophisticate yet but she was generous and kind in her remarks and attitude. Ron, you may be a wonderful man but in this exchange you sounded like a person who would talk down to a waitress, scream at a cab driver who didn’t speak English well, etc. You come across as a bully or at least a bitter queen. Seems like you have forgotten The Golden Rule, which still is applicable today. And your comment about “round R&B divas with big voices” is demeaning and demonstrates your own lack of sensitivity. I would LOVE to have another big-voiced Diva in our midst and if I ever have the opportunity to communicate with this woman, I will let her know you do not speak for all gay people. Finally, Ron, I hope all of us can resist the urge to ‘scream and demean’. There’s too much of that out there, as Trump and Cruz have so amply demonstrated. Peace, brother.
Ram Rod
Bye bitch. Glad she showed her true colors before I spent $$$ on her ignorant big ass.

2016: The year of everyone being offended by everything.
Get over yourself, Queerty. I’ve heard worse things said from people who are in fact LGBT. You are just fueling a fire in a community that needs to help itself before striking out at others.
Mack
@Skot Skotnicki: Let Jesus buy her records then.
Realitycheck
Anyone that ugly should be kinder to others.

@Seth Ruimveld: I agree
Ksb1978
Wow. Guess a majority of people in these comments lack basic reading comprehension. She called no one animals. She used the word lifestyle, but there’s been way worse said and I’ve seen gay men and women still use that word, unfortunately, but does not deserve the vitriol you all are spewing. Reading is fundamental and y’all should have READ before commenting. Would make you look less like fools. @celtic @rockstar @sfbeast @korreeJohnson and a few others. Y’all need to take a reading class. LOL!
Daniel-Reader
The irony that the KKK uses Middle East religion to say the same thing about non-white people apparently escapes her. How unfortunate. Bigotry disguised under religion is still bigotry.
nowliveit
Yea, I don’t like her comments but, hey, let’s give her a moment towards a second chance and look in the mirror without these over the top, quick to condemn thoughts. Talking about drama queens. This article takes it too far. The sentiment is spot on. The extremes reached are too close-minded.
Maybe she’s a young woman who has been indoctrinated her whole life (duh) and we should give her a chance to “evolve”. We give our politicians that chance.
I am not excusing her ignorance. Her generation is supposed to be completely okay with us LGBTQ non-animals. I can see both sides and I can see a future of lots of groveling once someone in the industry tells her what’s up as compared to her bible-thumping thoughts.
I’m willing to keep a door of interest open.
David Michael Taylor
Using the religion you chose as an excuse for bigotry doesn’t mean you’re not a bigot. Stating your opinion doesn’t mean nobody else gets to criticize or act upon it. Blaming the way you were raised by bigots doesn’t get you a pass on your bigotry. You don’t get to “agree” or “disagree” with someone’s existence. And please put the “everybody is outraged” trope to bed, since you’re doing the same thing only worse by expressing your outrage over everyone else’s outrage without addressing the issue, which is her ignorant bigotry in the year 2016.
Andy Cox
I’m offended that you’re offended blah blah blah! Queerty stop trying to cause a stink about nothing! This wasn’t an example of homophobia, bad sentence construction perhaps but certainly not offensive!
Bob LaBlah
I don’t see where her comments are worthy of her being demonized if thats exactly how and what she said. I think it is the interviewer looking for publicity.
startenout
I know that I’m supposed to be outraged about what she said, but really, from someone devoutly religious from a state steeped in homophobia, what she said was not only sensitive but also a breath of fresh air. No, everyone does not have to love us or agree with us, the same way I don’t agree with polyamory or open relationships: that’s just not for me and I don’t understand it or want to be a part of it, but you do you. We coexist. She rebukes other people’s statements that we are animals and wishes the best for us as people.
I know it’s a new week, so we need someone new to vilify, but this? This is a stretch.
okbye
@Seth Ruimveld: I read it the same way you did, I didn’t find it offensive but I’m not gay so maybe it just went over my head.
The comment is a bit ambivalent, it could be read either as she is one of the ones that considers a gay ‘lifestyle’ as wrong but it isn’t her place to judge or that some people consider it wrong, it’s not clear. It shouldn’t matter though, she’s sayintg it’s no one’s place to judge.
I can’t speak for her but it struck me that a lot of religious people think it’s ok to be gay as long as you don’t act on it, which is such bullshit but religion can twist things in really weird ways. Maybe that’s where the ‘lifestyle’ thing comes in. You can’t help being gay but don’t live it. I can see that part being offensive if that’s what she was getting at, but who knows. You know they don’t approve of heterosexual activity either except under certain conditions. Way too much concern over other people’s sex lives.
Leo
Blows my mind some of the moronic poetry that comes from so called entertainers…..lordy..and this freako over the edge wonder takes todays prize……a new wig…….hehebeeeee
Juanjo
I have to agree with the the author. She has committed a serious mistake. Those of you dismissing her use of the term “lifestyle” in her comment are not paying attention. There is no gay lifestyle because being gay is not a matter of sitting down and deciding one day that you think you would do sex with men rather than women for lifestyle reasons. Are there some gay men who hit the circuit parties and all the trendy night spots, wearing the latest fashion and with their hair done exactly in style? Yes. But the vast majority of us do not do so any more than we all are into leather daddies, twinks, or any of a number of various acts we are all accused of being obsessed with. Most of us lead lives not all that different form our straight counterparts – we get up in the morning, dress and go to work. We come home at night, eat and watch tv or do some other recreational activity and then go to sleep. We go on vacations, argue with our spouses occasionally and do laundry.
The fact is that the author points out that her criticism of people calling gay people “animals” is actually damning with faint praise. That is a valid observation. That said I am a little more charitable in my appraisal of her. I have a feeling she is not all the experienced when it comes to this sort of public speaking. The fine art of saying nothing and making it sound like it is something. A phrase said in-artfully can be turned into much more than the original intent. That may be what has happened here. And fact is she has certainly met some gay people being on that show. Who has worked with her on choreography, makeup, hair styling, costumes and all the other myriad aspects which go into a performer’s life? Mormons?
Jake O'Gorman
The person who wrote this article is obviously overly sensitive. The words were clearly taken out of context and blown way out of proportion. Just bc one person feels this way, doesn’t mean everyone will follow suit. I don’t agree with a lot of celebrity comments, however, it will not stop me from watching their movies or listening to their music.
Jake Richardson
I think younare looking for something to be offended at. Why do you require Everyones approval of your life? If you, and we as a community dont let that go, its just going to breed more misery down the line. Nobody is liked by everyone. Its just a fact.
Rico A Saxton
And what if people said they don’t like Fat people? And who do you think is going to buy your music?
AtticusBennett
the cluelessness in the folks defending her….how pathetic y’all are.
here’s the deal: “The Lifestyle” is bigoted, ignorant Churchspeak. There is no “lifestyle”. There is only being. “i disagree with the lifestyle” is no different than “love the sinner, hate the sin” – it’s the mindset, the passive-aggressive sweetly-delivered condemnation of your life and being that perpetuates Closet Culture. That contributes to legions of guys on the DownLow. That leads LGBT people born into religious families to seek out bogus ex-gay therapies. That leads broken boys like Matt Moore, Grady Smith and countless others to lead a pious “celibate life” because “acting on your desires is a sin and you’ll be damned”
It’s what keeps kids closeted. It’s what keeps insecure LGBT people thinking that who and what they are is lesser, a sin, wrong, harmful, shameful. It’s what drives LGBT youth to take their own lives.
make no mistake, what she is espousing is actually far more harmful than “God hates f@gs” ever has been or ever will be.
He BGB
Only gays who read queerty will know this which is, what? .001 percent of gay people? So everyone will think she’s fine and buy any product of hers.
Masc Pride
The forced outrage over this is so petty. Her statement seems rather objective but actually tilts more towards promoting general acceptance. She is simply talking about manners. We don’t all have to like each other or agree with each other, but common courtesy should always be a given.
readycarlos
@Will Mcnamara: Not horribly derogatory but still somewhat misguided. She sounds like someone who’s exposure to the LGBT community has been limited.
Alistair Wiseman
From a community that wanted tolerance, to a community that now demands endorsement – there will always be leftists who find (and thrive on) victimhood.
If you’re 22 years old and suddenly thrust into the limelight, you better have your politically correct, LGBT-approved nomenclature polished and ready.
Gary Reese-Forrest
Whatever! Just another low rent, ignorant bigot from Mississippi – I couldn’t care less what she thinks
Tackle
Rob Smith, you need to calm the fu@k down! I personally did not find her comments offensive or homophobic. And no way did she equate LGBTQ people to animals. She was referencing that someone else did. And who the hell are you to write a letter, saying that “support from THIS community is gone.” And, “we’ve seen enough. Bye La’Porsha”. Really Rob! Who in the hell elected you leader of LGBTQ people/community?? I sure did miss that election… NO! You don’t get to decide for me, and vast numbers of people within the LGBTQ community, as to what is offensive, who we support: in any way, and how we spend our money… And as far as someone checking Candice Glover, someone should check you,and remind you that you are a contributor to Queerty. And not President of the LGBTQ community…
AtticusBennett
@Alistair Wiseman: we’ve never wanted Tolerance. the only gay men who want Tolerance are gay conservatives (like you) who know darn well that Tolerance is the best you’ll ever get, because the people in your life all never actually love and truly support you.
make no mistake – tolerance is not a liberal viture or goal. tolerance is what conservatives give because they’re not good enough people to love you for who you are. they “tolerate” you in spite of it.
you wanted tolerance. it’s the most you’ll ever get. the rest of us aren’t lowly enough to consider tolerance something worth cheering about.
Gus Anderson
Don’t sweat her. She isn’t going anywhere. Hell, she’s just a loser from a game show.

How can she be in the entertainment industry and not have tons of gay friends? The entertainment industry has many working for it. She must just be a dumb ass.
demetreus
OMG, now people can’t have an opinion? This girl wasn’t saying anything derogatory. Whoever wrote this “open letter” just played into the hype for no apparent reason. As a gay black man. I doubt this “open letter” was written by a gay black man. Nice try with the race-baiting tho!
Timothy Herbert

why even bother, she’ll sell a few gospel albums and get nowhere in the music industry.
Hussain-TheCanadian
I really don’t understand why is this person getting one-iota of our negative energy – whether she likes the gay community or not is her loss – I don’t see the reason why we should be up-in arms over this – She’s not a person who has any sort of effect over our lives.
The gay community in the U.S. should focus on getting the Federal government enforcing Job and Housing guarantees for non-discrimination – Whomever becomes the Democratic nominee should be forced to pledge to do this for our community when they become President.
onthemark
@demetreus: He’s definitely a gay black man and he’s been writing for Queerty for quite awhile. He’s usually pretty good too.
It’s interesting though, Rob Smith almost always participates in the comment threads. The fact that he HASN’T joined in this time probably means he realizes he totally screwed up this one.
Reading comprehension problem!
crowebobby
From a show-BUSINESS angle, it’s not enough to “not exactly” insult or offend your public, it’s part of your “job” to win them over and make them actually “like/love” you. Just “not disliking” you won’t cut it. There may be a few performers with such overwhelming talent they can ignore this rule, but I think it’s pretty foolhardy for La’Porshe to be risking it at this point in her career.
Brian
Maybe LaPorsha doesn’t care about coins. She’s entitled to her views, by the way. Many women are offended by male homosexual desire due to its apower.
Rob Smith
@onthemark: Thanks for that. I’ve just been too busy to join in today, but I stand by every word I wrote. I wasn’t so much offended by the comments, but at the stupidity of making them about a community that has so much buying power.
Tad Greenslate
Annnnnnnnddddddd…….Who is she??
JerseyMike
I don’t find anything she said offensive.. What I do find offensive is when someone says ” no fems, no blacks, no Asians, no fats. We as a community can’t and don’t respect each other, why do we expect others to respect us. So f’ing tired of the fake outrage. So what she said lifestyle.. Not everyone knows it’s offensive. She sounds like her heart is open so she will learn more. Just because we know it’s offensive others who are not apart of this community does not. When we start treating people in our community that don’t look and/or act like us maybe, just maybe others will do the say to us.. If you want respect, you have give it..

@Brian: I can tell you, among my aunts, who are of Arab and Muslim heritage, they are more accepting and loving to me than my uncles – Why is that Brain?
onthemark
@Rob Smith: Well, um, she didn’t call anybody “animals.” She was quoting “someone” and disagreeing. Did you not get that part? And yet, you went on and on and on about it, totally incorrectly.
fingertrouble
@AtticusBennett: exactly. I’ve always said – you tolerate something you hate or don’t like. I demand respect, the same respect you’d give anyone else. I don’t want to be ‘tolerated’, I want to be accepted for who I am and not feel like it’s weasel words like ‘lifestyle’ or grudging in any way.
JerseyMike
Now isn’t this special… A butch of bigots calling someone else a bigot.. Now that’s the pot calling the kettle black. Most of you writing don’t even realize that are sounding like the bigot you are calling her.. Or do you realize?
CCTR
Her views are that of an ignorant (in terms of LGBT and PR issues)22 year old product of growing up in a bigotted state amidsts bigotted religious teachings and indoctrinations. Let’s hope this backlash inspires her to educates herself and renounce her religious beliefs.

Boycott LIFESTYLE condoms! What an offensive and homophobic brand name! The rubber industry has been profiting at our expense for decades! I’m outraged!
Brian
Well, the gay lifestyle IS conducive to STD’s and non-stop partying. Many gay-identifying men live in bars and clubs. It’s a very poor lifestyle. Bars and clubs are for chilling out in, not living in.
The promiscuity of men is difficult to control. It is much loved by men, of course, but it is not productive and can even be dangerous.
I’m not saying that anybody who expresses male homosexual desire has this lifestyle but don’t deny that it IS promoted constantly. Men love partying and promiscuity regardless of their sexual desires – hetero or homo.
Marky
@onthemark: I’m switching to Cranberry Almond Crunch, take THAT Special K!
Blackceo
Given how gays and gay rights are really under attack these days from certain people, I’m not quite getting the hate for her on this. Yes she’s still ignorant sounding by calling it a “lifestyle” but in the grand scheme of what we could criticize people who are anti-gay, she is not one of them.
Moving along…
Brian
@Hussain-TheCanadian: I would say that your own uncles possibly fear their own homosexual desires if they exist. They are very easy to hide; one way of rejecting them within oneself is to reject somebody who represents them. That’s how homophobia works.
You have to remember that men who are attracted to women are fully aware of the fact that women do not accept male homosexual desires in men who are also attracted to women. Women find male homosexual desire threatening when it exists in such men.
CCTR
@Blackceo: agreed! as an overweight, black female american idol runner-up with an afrocentric aesthetic her platform is a little less influential than that of some of the legislatures in N.Carolina and Mississippi to name a few, hopefully the backlash will be a learning lesson
Tommy O'Brien

Hussain-TheCanadian
@Brian: Everything is possible – What I was trying to say that woman generally are more sympathetic towards gay men than straight men are – I don’t buy into the narrative that most homophobic men are gay themselves. Straight men generally dont want to be the object of pursuit, they feel helpless, powerless, and emasculated.
It seems to me you are referring to Bisexual men – I can understand a woman who would feel angry and intolerant towards her supposed partner having attraction towards men (or woman) – If I was with a guy who is showing attraction towards woman, I wouldn’t be accepting of that either.

Just realized why she mad a reference to LGBT people and animals. That comment was made by the Pacquiao boxer guy and the American Idol winner Trent Harmon sang the national anthem at his recent fight. Too bad American Idol is no longer, they deserve some backlash too.

In regard to the controversy about La’Porsha Renae I’d like to share my point of view. I am a gay man and I voted for her throughout the show’s final season. I did not judge her by her religious or personal values I judged her by her talent and therefore, I do not feel betrayed by her statements. I don’t expect everyone to like the fact that I was born homosexual but it is one of the facts of life. She, being a straight woman and from a region of the country where it is very likely she had little contact with openly LGBTQ people, she simply did not understand that people do not choose to be gay. She knows now… I see it as a hard first lesson in public relations. I like her and will buy her music unless it is gospel music (nothing wrong with it…I’m just not a fan of it).

@AtticusBennett:
It’s sad when you have failed to know or learn our history – or you have conveniently failed to remember it.
In your typical leftist fashion, no post of yours would be complete without the gratuitous, personal ad hominem attack.
Perhaps if you learned our history you wouldn’t have to continuously resort to presumptuous, unenlightened fantasies.
Do us all a favor, please grow up and learn our history.
DuMaurier
Is this all because she used the term “lifestyle”? Yeah, you don’t say that, it’s not a valid, descriptive term; but come on, we know what it means. It means same-gender sexual “activity”. She was saying some people think that’s a sin according to their religion (including, it appears, her) If that’s supposed to be the death knell of a career, then say so; don’t hide behind someone’s dumb, ill-chosen phrasing.
AtticusBennett
@Alistair Wiseman: i know our history. and it didn’t come from feasting on scraps. like many left-hating gay men, you suck up to the people who don’t respect you. you think you’re successful because you’ve been Tolerated. the rest of us, myself absolutely included, demand and command better. and we get it
ad hominem’s are easy with you. i’ve seen you on Facebook. you’re a tired, homely, troll of a man.
tolerance is what gay conservatives aim for, because it’s the most their Sh*t families will often ever give. progressive liberal gays? we’re better than that, demand better than that, command better than that, and GET better than that.
you poor sad old hack. 😀
Jay A. Scaramazzo
Would never spend a penny on her song.
Brian
@Hussain-TheCanadian: Yes women tend to be more sympathetic to gay-identifying men so long as those men segregate and confine themselves. It protects women, so of course women will be all for it.
PeterGay
Regarding gay people Ms Renae said: “They’re not animals.” She expressed her believe that we are like everybody else, that we have feelings, that we should be treated with respect, that “We should be able to coexist with one another.” I have NO idea what Rob Smith saw in her comment that made him so upset about Ms Renae’s opinion. All I can see is a lot of support for the gay community. And I thank LaPorsha Renae for her GREAT opinion she has of ME.
Darryl Moir
Who is she anyway and who cares.
Hussain-TheCanadian
@Brian: What do you mean by “segregate” and “confine” themselves?
martinbakman
@AtticusBennett: Exactly.
I’m so sick of X-tians always qualifying every comment with ‘can’t condone that lifestyle’.
That is no better than MLK’s daughter preaching we are a stench in Jeebuz nostrils.
Shofixti
We ARE ALL animals.
In a factual sense.
We are damn sexy animals baby!

@AtticusBennett:
More from the “all knowing” Atticus.
You stated, “i’ve [sic] seen you on Facebook. you’re [sic] a tired, homely, troll of a man.”
Really? You’ve seen me on Facebook? I’m tired, homely and a troll?
I have never been on Facebook. I do not, nor ever had, an account on Facebook.
Since you know so much, please tell me more about myself. Tell me more about how my family hates me. Tell me more about my Facebook account.
You, Atticus Bennett, are a pathetic, lying fraud.

Amen. I used to,root of LaPorsha now that I’ve lost respected her. Will NOT buy her records. Go away, you’re a bad witch!

@Dean Long: Blacks hate gays…it’s quite that simple. It’s always been that way. Ask any black gay male.

A ground shattering opinion it does make into the dark world.

Who the hell is she and what is with that tortured toilet rug in her head?
Sluggo2007
She said what she’s been raised to say. I didn’t find her comments offensive, just ignorant and typical of where she’s from.
BOB K
ROB – she is quoting what she was told in a Black church, so mentioning that she is Black is relevant
PS– She looks like she won the “Bronze Miss Piggy Contest”
DeserTBoB
@BOB K: That’s being charitable to my line of thinking, but OK! Dave’s toilet rug comparison was more on the mark for me, at least.
DeserTBoB
@nowliveit: Are you serious, or delirious?? Do you have any clue what Donna Summer, who the gay community made rich and famous during the mid-’70s, did to us at the height of the AIDS pandemic? ANY CLUE? I’m about to forever turn my back on the gay community because of their basic refusal to confront their enemies. My brothers and I fought long and hard to work toward equality, and watching all this condescending attitude about here remarks about us not really being “animals” is insulting, at the very least. Cut off her money and see how THAT works for her. We cut off Summers’ money in the early ’80s and wrecked her career.
Mike Muniz
who?
DeserTBoB
@crowebobby: Donna Summer thought she was immune because of church nutter Geffen…look what happened to HER. Down the toilet, baby!
Celtic
Donna Summer BUILT her career on the backs of gay boys. Without us she would have been nothing. Then she decided to throw gays under the bus. Sayonara, baby.
Bruce Weaver
Never heard of her before now.
Greg Morse
I would have bought her album but now I won’t.

What she also said, which the above article did NOT quote:
“I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised,” Renae said. The singer went on to disclose that she has “a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people.”
Yet another not-too-bright cult member of the Christian Church of the Poison Mind. Putting a flower on a pile of dung doesn’t change the smell.

@Craig Bankert: I agree with the first part of your comment but the other part is very offensive. All people should be sensitive of bigotry regardless, but usually we are mostly or only sensitive to bigotry directed at us (whatever group we identify with and are a member of). Bigotry is bigotry. Why should blacks be more sensitive when blacks and every other ethnic group has witnessed and continue to witness the effects of some form of bigotry?
Tobi
I’ve always thought of “gay” as a lifestyle, whereas “homosexual” is what I am.
DeserTBoB
@Tobi: I tend to agree on that.
Tackle
@Craig Bankert: And I’m so damn sick and tired of ignorant gays like you who are to damn old to generalize a WHOLE group of people, as if ALL Blacks said this: or say bigoted things against GLBTQ people. There is more r@cism in the LGBTQ community, than there is homophobia in the Black community. Are you just as outraged at the r@cism in the LGBTQ community?? And guess what? when Black homophobia is displayed, it’s usually BLACK LGBTQ people who bare the brunt of it. Not people like you…
DeserTBoB
@Tackle: I was around at the time, very active in gay political action (No on 6, ACT-UP, etc.) and was in the music biz in DJ and was tied in with the promo business in the mid-late ’70s. It happened in New York at a music industry function to which she, as a multi-gold recipient from the RIAA, was invited. By this time, she’d been taken in by fellow “born-again” David Geffen after being booted out from Polydor USA by PolyGram along with Neil Bogart, mostly due to the expensive tastes in cocaine, among other problems. Many promoters, pool presidents and DJs heard the words, and the story spread like wildfire out to the coast by the next week. The Advocate picked up the story the next monthly issue. She said it, THEN Geffen, ever the manipulator, went into damage control mode, making outright denials, etc. etc. a per media mogul methedology, because he stood to lose millions on her next highly-hyped project. Didn’t matter, the project tanked, as did all her following ones. Her suit against New York Magazine for libel also tanked as bad as her post ’83 records, and she bailed out of the suit with a pittance for a settlement, which her counsel demanded by motion be covered up by a gag on both parties. You GenYers/Millennials think you know everything, don’t you? You don’t know shit…and never will. You idiots will NEVER KNOW what it was like back then, and frankly, I avoid you like the plague, gay or not.
dwbyers1960
DeserTBoB is an idiot. He has no clue to what he is talking about.

To all those who are so sure that Donna Summer made those comments, what proof can you provide? She had stated many times that she did not make THOSE comments. Can you provide video, audio, eyewitness account? It seems like another one of those white urban gay legend myths… Much like, Blacks in California were responsible for the prop-8 passage of 2008. And to show how hypocritical many gays can be, we have documented accounts of the homophobia spewed by, Paris Hilton: allowed to be Grand Marshal of the 2005 Gay & Lesbian Pride Parade in West Hollywood. Blake Shelton, Eminem, Adam Corolla Mel Gibson, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis… All of the above mentioned, most gays would/have kissed ass, and given a free pass. And Donna Summers career was not ruined by so-called anti-gay remarks. Some gays love to be little power queens. Her career, like many artist of the disco area was ruined when disco died.
dwbyers1960
The Gay Natzi’s are sure out and about.

@dwbyers1960: Really! And you were there at the time? Of course not. Have any useful information? Of course not. Here’s your trophy for participating; the door’s over THERE —–>>>
DeserTBoB
@DeserTBoB: Ooh WAIT…you DID “contribute” earlier, with your statement (it was buried by the Queerty staff): “There are a lot more Christians than there are gays you idiots” or words to that effect. Perhaps we can have you buried again? Oh, a little hint for you…you people are going to get STOMPED in November; Hillary Clinton will be the next President of the US, the Senate will go Democratic, and the GOP will lose House seats. Your reign of terror is over. What WILL you church nutters do?? Maybe you should pray with Fred Crudz…yeah, that’s it! And don’t forget to send The Frump some of your SSD check…he needs the money; he’s WAY under a billion now!

You queers can shell it out, but your sure can’t take. So, you have to cry to Queerty.com. So, what are you going to do when “Anonymous”, destroys the website?

I’m not offended by anything she said…and I reviewed her before and after interviews…yes, gay is not a “lifestyle” – La’Porsha is someone who has not been schooled in the right way to speak in public…yes, she is probably a bit prejudice, but I think she is one that will change for the better…there is a lot worse. I am more offended by the peeps who push the “POST COMMENT” button multiple times because they are too impatient to wait for their comment to post and they end up posting the same comment 2-3 times…stop it!

Meaning to ‘NASTY’ so you need all THAT HAIR to balance the rest of your body?????
