—The immaculate Grace Jones on that pop music plague thing Lady Gaga [via]
For a black woman who didn’t make mainstream music back in the day to still make news today is amazing. She has had a career for 4 decades. We will see if Gaga who has taken elements of Grace, Madonna, Cher, Cyndi, David Bowie, Elton John in 2040. Highly unlikely.

Magnificent! funny Grace declined the invitation. it would have given her buzz and no doubt brought in the cash. I appreciate Gaga’s work, but she pushes everything so hard. Grace can still KILL in a rhinestone bowler. any minute now Gaga is going to have motion sensors implanted in her bones and will only be visible with CGI 3D glasses and a black light. I can’t wait till she burns out on this crap and saves the theatrics for for something worthy.

Gay people are the the saddest people in the world with the worst taste.
Please tell me all the bitchy comments above are from people below 23 years old?
Pleeeease.
And Grace, if you EVER lower yourself to mess around with Lady Gaga the most attention seeking person in the world ala Madonna then you’ve sold your soul.
You’ve been pro-gay before any of these attention b*tches.
You’re honest about who you are and have always been a force to be reckoned with.
Lady Gaga was best friends with fag hater and racist Paris Hilton when she appeared in the Single Life with her dark skin and naturall black hair.
PLEASE Grace, do not lower yourself to what the noughties is now which is obsessed with celebs and mediocrity.
Please, we need someone in the lime light with some sort of genuine substance.

It would be nice to see Ms. Jones and Nina Hagen be civil toward other women. Whether Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, Joan Jett (all 3 friends btw) dislike other women, they don’t make a public stink of it- you don’t hear male artist making catty remarks about each other. Why do women feed into these roles? In the case of Lauper vs Madonna, they actually liked each other and in the late 90s, Madonna admitted to “borrowing” Cyndi’s look, but they dismiss any media feud as made up and silly. Women and the GLBTQ community should only support one another in an ideal world.

It’s depressing to see the perez hilton crowd flipping their mall-educated shit over this. Is what Ms. Jones said really so harsh (I doubt even Ms. Ga would say it was). Jones has a demonstrated CV of critically and historically important output. In short, she’s earned it, baby. Either we’re not educating our fagalas about art anymore, o they’re simply not doing thier homework.

I’ve heard Grace Jones’ music before, I’ve seen her outfits and while I’ve never seen her perform live I have seen recordings of her performances. And no…just no. There is absolutely no reason for her to be such a Grade-A bitch towards someone who is equally (if not more so) talented and who has been able to actually reach mainstream popularity. Maybe Ms. Jones should get off her high horse and have accepted that invitation so that she could actually be as recognizable today as she seems to think she is.

Girls, girls. You’re BOTH pretty…
I’m kind of saddened by Ms. Jones’ attitude here. I enjoy both artists and while their styles could be considered similar, there are still huge differences in both look and music. For instance, Grace’s style is truly avant garde while Gaga’s is meant to be an elaborate parody of pop culture and fashion iconography. Ms. Jones appears to be either not in on the joke, annoyed by being the partial subject of the joke, or bitter about not better cashing in on the joke. Whatever happened to the whole “imitation = flattery” thing?
Grace helped pave the way for artists like Gaga, who openly admits that Jones is a major inspiration. I’m having a difficult time understanding why Grace is so annoyed that a fresh young artist admires her enough to incorporate her style into their pop-culture-collage image.
They’re both great artists and both have made their mark on pop culture, particularly with the gays, and both have earned their musical icon status. But seriously, Grace’s comments are like a drag mother getting pissed off that her daughter is more popular than her.

Grace can say what she wants cuz she’s Grace Jones. But most artist or art is ever original, everything builds on the past and images een growing up so no doubt Grace Jones inpsired many people to be their own crazy self. Every generation has people like Gaga who are unique to their time. There’s room for more then one artist with individual artistic style and thank god because it would all be so boring otherwise. But every Diva thinks theyre the sh*t who whatever they’re older and out of the spotlight is meaningless. While Gaga’s been in the hieght of her fame she spoke out for gay rights and equality, she was always open about her bisexuality. And she had mass appeal to all ages. So why hate on her? And i dont remember gaga ever saying she’s the first person to put stupid triangles on her dresses! She’s not like beyonce who rips off other artist work directly and then barely mentions that she was “inspired” unless pressed. Gaga is a true artisitic indiviual, and singer and songwriter, and this is clearly jealousy by GJ’s who thinks she’s the only crazy artsy person in all of history.

Come on, there are at least four elipses in that very brief article. That means it’s been creatively edited down to a few soundbites, and probably down to soundbites that make it sound bitchier than it actually was.
Grace Jones is a terrific artist. During the 80s you couldn’t walk into a gay bar with a video screen without seeing her work. Now, at 60, she remains a dynamic performer. If she’s unimpressed by Lady GaGa, maybe it’s because Jones has been there and done that.

Lady Gaga seems a bit too fake for my liking. Apart from the female bisexuality marketing ploy – probably dreamed up by straight men in suits at her record company – she comes across as a manufactured wannabe.
Grace Jones might never have had huge commercial success but she’s an amazing artist and vocalist, and that amazing thing called “original”.

Big up to Tylertime, Jason and any others that showed reverence and loyalty to a true artist. A mere 4 years ago – Gaga was a mallrat. While there is nothing wrong with that, it’s weird that she has suddenly become this ‘artiste’. Please. Clearly some of these commentors are either too young to have experienced Ms. Jones, or they are just bitter queens projecting their feelings onto her. Grace has reached legendary status. I don’t think the novelty of Gaga’s will have that level of lasting power.

I like Lady Gaga – but I think Grace’s bone structure, exotic looks and physicality carry off the costumes better.
Gaga kinda looks like a gawky girl from Long Island playing dress up on Halloween.
But I do like her music and personality and the fact she is doing something different.
But not as exotic as Grace.

while I do like Lady Gaga, there is no denying that Grace Jones is a heavy influence on the young musician. There is no sense arguing who is the better artist because, frankly, everyone has their own opinion and none of them are wrong. It’s all just a matter of what each of us has grown up listening too. Lady Gaga may have staying power or she may go the route of the Spice Girls… yes, let’s not forget that for a short while they seemed absolutely unstoppable. It really all depends on how she matures as an artist. Grace has been around a lot longer and paid her dues. Lady Gaga is working on it. I love her music but know so little about her asside from the fact that she dresses in bizarre attire and works it well. Grace also worked the bizarre attire well but perhaps that was too ahead of the times back then.

And why are any of us listening to some has-been who has to make controversial statements about today’s most popular artist just to make headlines, and just the headlines on Queerty no less?
Personally, I could care less about what this dried up California raisin impersonator has to say, whether or not she was the first to wear triangles over her eyes.

“Gaga kinda looks like a gawky girl from Long Island playing dress up on Halloween” – Oh Boy.
Exactly – nuff said
Fredo777 – I never asked you. I just don’t buy into her…I dont even know what it is. I’m not sure she does either. It’s all good though – anything is better than all the other crap that’s out now. Hers is just..different crap.

Doesn’t matter how old she is, Grace Jones just needs to get out there, lay some tracks and show she means *business*.
We need music like we need oxygen and if she can still make us want to get hot, sweaty & shirtless on the dancefloor, then we will be there!
C’mon Ms Jones, we need to hear from you! Show LaGaga who really rules!

In January 1999 GRACE JONES played the House of Blues at Walt Disney World in Orlando. During her performance she bared her breasts. What breasts?! Disney barred her from any and all things associated with Disney. Then, ABC-TV – which is owned by Disney – signs porn star Li’l Kim to “Dancing With The Stars!”
