Anti-Gay Bullying Claims Another Young Life

carl-joseph-walker-hoover

Another tormented grade schooler, another little kid who thinks there’s only one way out. “An 11-year-old Massachusetts boy, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, hung himself Monday after enduring bullying at school, including daily taunts of being gay, despite his mother’s weekly pleas to the school to address the problem. This is at least the fourth suicide of a middle-school aged child linked to bullying this year. Carl, a junior at New Leadership Charter School in Springfield who did not identify as gay, would have turned 12 on April 17, the same day hundreds of thousands of students will participate in the 13th annual National Day of Silence by taking some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) bullying and harassment at school. The other three known cases of suicide among middle-school students took place in Chatham, Evanston and Chicago, Ill., in the month of February.” [GLSEN]

Poor kid. Why does this have to happen? I remember suicide even went through my mind when I was younger but I always thought that if I kill my self they would win. These kids need more support from parents, friends, anyone…

So sad and disturbing. Reading this story brings back a lot of memories from growing up though. Being made fun of all the time and feeling alone, sad, guilty, and that there was no where to turn. So young. There needs to be a support system for kids growing up feeling like this. RIP.

Another sad story that makes my heart ache for this child and his family. The hate seems to be getting worse in so many schools and the taunts to these children seems be ignored by the staff. Just too sad, and, I hope his family sues, it of course won’t bring back thier beloved son, but, maybe it will force the system to stop the hate.

      this story is tragic. period.
but it might be worth noting that his story could be interpreted as an anti-bullying one instead of a anti-gay bullying one. in reading the stories, my impression is that he did not fit in (he came to the middle school without any of his elementary school friends) and was targeted for a variety of reasons. it seems presumptuous to conclude that the anti-gay aspect of the bullying lead to his decision.

It makes we wonder if he was raised in a gay positive home. If he was raised in a home where gay was not an insult or a negative perhaps the ant-gay bullying would not have hurt him so deeply that he took his own life. America needs to address this issue in schools.

This is a clear case of negligent and disinterested school officials. Why anyone would ignore a parent’s plea that their child is being subjected to bullying at a face-to-face level is just scary.

Schools have this thought in their minds that all children, at some point, go through bullying. Fact of the matter, yes they do. Does that make it right? No. Does that allow the administration to excuse it? No. Now, someone has taken their own life and the school will respond as though this situation was entirely out of their hands.

It is, in a word, inexcusable. However, what is the answer? How do we solve this? You cannot easily change the minds of people who bully others. Clearly, telling the administration does nothing. If you sue the school (which should and most likely will happen), they’ll have even less money and will lay off more staff, leaving even less supervision to prevent these things.

So what do we do? Honestly, I am not trying to be philosophical and ask rhetorical questions. This is a tragic trend that needs to be addressed and I, for one, would like to know what the best plan of action is.

The people who made that “I can grow up and marry a princess” ad killed this little boy, as did everyone who laughed when someone else was called “faggot” or “nigger.” He is ours, although he was not gay, and we mourn him. His sacrifice will make the world better for those like him who come after. He is a martry, a new star in heaven.

We must all stand up for kids of color who do not conform to gender norms. They are the people in our community who are most at risk.

If you are unhappy or unsafe, please reach out and get the help you need. You are just as precious as Carl, and the world needs you just as much.

This is so sad! I remember feeling like that a few years ago when i first thought that i might be gay. I was a freshman in high school and i didn’t know what was going on with myself and my sexuality and emotions. My parents are very anti-gay and they still don’t know about me or my girlfriend. Luckily for me one of my friends found out that i was hurting myself. He saved my life. We’re still best friends and I’m so grateful for him. But no one was there for this little boy. We need to find some way to help children like him. It’s a huge task but we can do it. Every soul is precious, no matter what anyone says.

I’m glad that you asked this because it’s something I’m trying to intellectualise in a really simple manner, that can be adapted into effective training and regulations of schools.

Thing is, and we have the same issues here in the UK but I’m not sure how they would work in the US…aren’t your schools mostly privatised because of what Bush did?

      1) There needs to be stricter regulations. Like what we do with the bankds, we need to do that with the Welfare/Children/School system.

      2) This kids won’t stop bullying because they come from a bullish background and bullish society. So this is a social problem. From this look at ethical issues being sanctioned against the Press and Advertising.

Again this is thinking in terms of the UK, were people are assholes BUT people are allowed to be non religous or a socialist without being burnt at the stake, like in the US.

Your culture is built in hate and fear. It’s built on winning and bullying.

How can you even try and change that? Y’know?

I dunno. I find America a very interesting experiment. You guys see being nice as the worst thing possible to being a communist!

It’s ironic really that you are so anti-communism when your forfathers travelled to the Americas as a ‘community’..

      I dunno, simple depressing..

His big thing was mandatory testing. While there are state and federal regulations, individual school districts largely set their own standards.

“BUT people are allowed to be non religous or a socialist without being burnt at the stake, like in the US.”

People have never been burnt at the steak here – that’s a European tradition and the Communist witch hunts were over 50 years ago. You’re way overestimating the power of the religious right or the right wing in general.

“Your culture is built in hate and fear. It’s built on winning and bullying.”

I think there needs to be a moratorium on ignorant foreigners posting on American issues here. Your post suggests that you know very little about the US beyond your own stereotyping and you’ve obviously never been here. Put down the Guardian and get a grip.

We didn’t put Saddam in power. The Ba’ath party took control of Iraq in the late 60s, a coup the US had nothing to do with, and he solidified his power during the 70’s. Considering he nationalized the Iraqi oil industry we didn’t have much to do with him until he invaded Iran. He was never an ally of the US, but he was someone who went to war with Iran so we sold him weapons.

The U.S is always in a hurry to meddle in other countries affairs yet they can’t stand other countries opinions on their(U.S) affairs.

A kid died.Others are probably gonna die if something is not done.Obviously there is a problem with a system that finds it ok to bully others. And it obviously comes from a deeper place than just kids being kids.

Anti-gay bullying (and bullying of any kind) is a problem in both the US and the UK, but the UK seems to be trying harder to stop it. Wasn’t there some kind of campaign in the UK featuring John Barrowman, with posters and flyers up in schools about it? I don’t know how successful these things are, but it’s a step in the right direction. There are also hate speech laws. And far more openly gay entertainers and other public figures (except athletes?), which helps people to realize we are normal, because they see us out there every day.

Well, this thread took a wrong turn back into my 11th grade history class.

I will stay away from the discussions taking place in international waters and stick to the topic at hand.

A policy change will not do much in schools, because as much as they teach us the system that is our government, they themselves do not follow it.

Public schools have only two branches instead of three: Legislative (School District Officials) and Executive (Principals and Faculty). There is no Judicial branch (save the mock form of one where the principal gets to pass a sentence such as suspension). They have people to make and enforce the rules, but no one to interpret them. It is a school after all. Students don’t have the same rights inside those walls as they do outside of them. So why would they need a Judicial branch when there is no right to a fair trial within the school?

The reason is for matters just like this article. The enforcers of the policy see it as a black and white set rule, unchanging as the sea. There is no room for either side, victim or perpetrator, to discuss the event. The Executive branch wants swift justice and carries it out as they see fit.

However, what happens when there is controversy? How do they handle students saying “Yes they did!” and “No I didn’t!”? If the enforcer did not witness the infraction for themselves, who is there to trust to give an accurate account? It is in this instance that most bullies get away with their misdeeds. They know not to just commit them in plain sight of an enforcer, they have to leave room for reasonable doubt.

That doubt is usually then scrutinized by a judge, two opposing counsels presenting evidence and a jury of your peers. No school is going to commit to that much time, effort and money over something as “silly” as a little name-calling, or shoving or anything “childish” and “harmless”. Every kid goes through it. Toughen up! [Hopefully you can all read my sarcasm in there]

By turning a blind eye to these situations, the schools are condemning their students. It is clear that our schools have neither the funds to support equal treatment nor the commitment to uphold it. It is just not high on their radar.

I hope this tragedy and many others like it that have already taken place will change the way schools deal with the well-being of their student body.

      “You’re a humorless, stupid asshole”

Calling other gay people faggot, freak, mincing nelly, woman, disgusting queen, effeminate freak, is hate speech you have gotten away with it for too long. Most of us have spent enough of our lives hearing that kind of anti-gay bullying why you think that is okay I don’t know and if you think you can get away with it here you are CRAZY.
Maybe your dad talked to you that way so it is sunk into your subconscious and you vomit it out on others but it is SICK. If you want to b a gay bash go somewhere else.

You have spent an hour now defending calling gay people FAGGOT, EFFEMINATE FREAK, DISGUSTING QUEEN, AND MINCING NELLY. Was that what your father called you? Is that why you use hate speech against other gays? Is there some reason you can’t just say sorry and stop the hate speech?
