Swedish soccer player Anton Hysén, whose father played for Liverpool in the 1980s, has revealed he’s gay in an interview with Offside magazine. “I am a footballer. And gay. If I perform as a footballer, then I do not think it matters if I like girls or boys.”
Hysén, who, plays for Sweden’s Utsiktens BK, says it’s kind of “fucked up” that he’s the first—and only—out pro player in the country. “It’s totally sick when you think about it—Where the hell is everyone else?”

Technically Justin Fashanu was the first openly gay man to play soccer in europe, he was also the first premier league player (this guy plays in the league below). He was at the end of his career and committed suicide shortly after due to all the pressure and hate he received. this was like 15 years ago.

@TheRealAdam: I kind of get where you’re coming from that we as a community can focus on superficial things while arguably more important stories about LGBT people of color being victimized for their idenity are ignored or, worse, derided. We are far too often obsessed with beauty over substance and sadly define beauty in terms of a white male, athletic, machismo ideal. HOWEVER, this particular story transcends that at least on some level, wouldn’t you agree? It’s not yet another article about the gay porn industry, right? Here we have a barrier breaking athlete. The first openly gay footballer in a nation where football is the most popular sport. That is significant, extremely significant to countless young boys in need of positive images of openly gay people in fields that aren’t generally welcoming to queer kids. And also, don’t you see any value in creating a space where gay men can ogle? It might not be the most attractive trait and it IS superficial and DOES ignore more life and death matters. But we still live in a culture where gay men must check their gaze, lest they end up harrassed or victimized themselves. So while we don’t want to lose our sense of what’s truly important or our need for political action, it is important that gay men also have the opportunity to fully express their sexuality just as heterosexual men are able to. And that means that in a story about a barrier breaking athlete who some find hot, they shouldn’t be scolded for expressing that lust. It’s ok to be prurient at times. It’s healthy. It’s our right. Just as it’s our duty to maintain perspective on what’s important and not lose sight of or become innured to stories about violence against members of our community or other forms of oppression we suffer. The balance is possible to strike.
