Antonio Nogueira Doesn’t Want To Train Gays For The Incredibly Gay UFC

Ultimate Fighting and Pride Fighting Championship heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira says that while has no problem rolling around shirtless with other men in tight compression shorts while male spectators hoot and holler, he will absolutely not train a gay dude in ultimate fighting because the gay dude might like it too much. Ugh. Why is it always the straight dudes who are the ones thinking about gay sex?

Here’s what Nogueira said:

“I have no prejudice against the gays, but I wouldn’t train with someone who’s gay. I have no malice, I don’t take our physical contact as (something) sexual. But what if the gay person has that malice of having physical contact with me, of staying there grappling? I would have no problems having a gay student in my academy, but I would rather not train with him.”

So that means that he wouldn’t teach women how to grapple either, right? And does he figure out the sexual orientation of all his students before they grapple? No, of course not. Maybe all those punches to the head has confused our heavyweight that no one gives a flying face-kick about sexual orientation when they’re fighting for your career in the Octagon of Pain.

In my experience, any “straight” man who’s afraid to have contact with, or be near a gay man, usually desperately wants to be near one. Nogueira doesn’t want to train with a gay man, because he’s afraid that he may become aroused.

Nog is a prizefighter and a professional. If there were any way in life as we know it to promote an openly gay fighter, (by which I mean if Dana White could sell pay-per-views with a card featuring a fighter who has a husband, for example) he would train with the guy, and he would have plenty of reasons to publicly denounce homophobia in the sport without associating himself personally with “teh gay”. I guarantee you he would roll with me if I told him I’d submit his sorry old ass in front of his coaches, for example, and there would be no grudges or shit talk after the fact either. It’s just that it’s an unknown factor at the moment, with the sport being marketed as if gay fighters don’t exist.

If someone gay came along and changed the sport, they would have to be savvy enough to convince Dana and the Fertitas to market them, which is again, a huge unknown. Can it even be done? What if the UFC tried to market a gay guy and failed? What if there was a huge backlash, and the company lost revenue/ Wouldn’t they have to cut the guy and be pilloried as homophobes? But then as it stands, how many non-heteros out there are capable of handing GSP his ass in the cage? A couple? Three? Maybe, since with the status quo we’ll never know.

It is a business, and it features people who fight in a cage for money. If I was that gay prospect, and couldn’t make money what would I do? It’s tough to throw “homophobia” around about people that you know who are trying to make a career while thinking it has something to do with you either way, because in fact it doesn’t. It’s about the buying public and the fights they want to watch. To me this means when fighters make comments about anything non-hetero, they are being forced to answer an empty question. They have to sell the company line, which isn’t necessarily homophobic, it’s more non-inclusive for marketing reasons. I train at Martial Arts with my partner and we roll four times a week with too many straight guys ( and gals, sometimes lately) to count. Everybody knows, and yet nobody cares, but then we aren’t trying to promote our “fighting careers” nor fight for money.

@Adman: “They have to sell the company line, which isn’t necessarily homophobic”

Are you kidding? The “company line” is absolutely homophobic! Whether it is fair or not, the company hears many comments on how “gay their sport is” and of course, as a proper homophobe will do, they distance themselves from anything remotely related to anything possibly gay!

Your generalization about his generalization is funny. He didn’t say gay men think about sex all the time. He could have meant men -in general- think about sex all the time. Wich is not correct either, but it’s not homophobic. It’s sexist.
Either way, I think Ross has a point in here: american gay men are a bunch of dramacuins. They are following the same inclusion policy than “negros” back in time: they try to ghetticize gays as they did with afros. That way, if any negro says a negro thing, it’s right, but if a white guy say’s something about them, it’s racist. Either way if a gay man say’s every fag thinks about sex all the time, it’s ok, but if a straight guy say’s that. Oh my god it’s the douche of the week!
I wish things don’t develop that ways here in Chile with this, so that we don’t have to deal with ghetticized douchebags in the future.

@Ross : If you’d ever engaged in grappling or rolling in a sport along the lines of a cagefight or MMA, you’d realise that you only immediate goal is victory (a.k.a. annihilation!) of your opponent (aka enemy), NOT sexual stimulation! Anyone unfocused enough to think of anything sexual will be lain flat in 3 seconds.

LOL…my questioning if that made me homophobic was rhetorical, not serious! Of COURSE I’m not homophobic…just don’t want to roll around around the ground with a female. I wrestled from 8th grade till I was a sophomore in college, and anybody who tells you that sex doesn’t pop into your head when you make a hard hip pop, or when you’re on your back in full guard, has no clue and no experience in a match. Boners are NOT uncommon, in a match or in a locker room…it’s not just some cheap porno line.

I can’t believe the people who say that this guy’s comments ARE NOT HOMOPHOBIC. Just for argument’s sake, let’s say they are right:

(Sarcastically, for those who might not get it)

NEVER in the whole History of Humankind has any homophobic person ever TEASED, insulted, BULLIED, punched, physically abused, KILLED A HOMOSEXUAL person because he feared that:

“the gay person has that malice of having physical contact with me (Nogueira’s words, not mine).

Never has that fear been a defense in any court of law in the whole World! Gays are just “drama queens”.

Why are straight men so insecure with their sexuality? The part about not wanting to train a gay dude is stupid. Who is thinking about sex while they are fighting? I think he would be more worried in the shower afterward. He has probably showered with many men, and just doesn’t know it. What, is the guy going to walk up and say, Hi, I’m gay, and I want you to train me. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I think anyone who is serious about the sport is not going to announce their sexual orientation.

@Dali: Ehhhhh, that’s where you’re wrong. You’ll see Dana and spokespeople (*cough* Joe Rogan *cough) throwing around “gay” and “faggot” one minute, and then creating gay positive messages the next. If you say that’s hands down homophobic, then I disagree. It’s fence sitting, trying to appeal to the broadest possible audience.

I think if our community could talk about this contemporary business reality when it comes to “culture wars” and it’s intersections with commerce and corporate whoredom in general, we’d be a lot better off than we are now. As it is, we’re listening to the GLAAD and HRC out of touch brigade as they drive hysteria to entice donations. (sound familiar? fRight wing “politics” anyone?). But that’s just me, I guess.

What I dislike are pseudo intellectuals from small south American countries who are more hung up about sex and masculinity — thanks to the catholic church — making long winded attempts at justifying an idiots behavior. The problem is this sport has a PR problem because let’s be real — it gives so called straight men a chance to ogle nearly naked men touching each other. I am sure many “fans” go home and fantasize about these men while having intercourse with their female partners (getting head). Which is fine in my opinion aa it’s their life to waste — but that’s why they are so obsessed with being clocked as gay.
