Are Closeted Gay Soldiers Performing 50% Worse Because of DADT?

"… A recent Cornell University study confirms what many people had assumed: "DADT" isn't just bad for gay people, it's bad for the military too. Gay and lesbian study participants who were asked to conceal their sexual orientation performed 20% worse on spatial reasoning tests and 50% worse on physical endurance tests as compared to those who were not given this instruction. The findings have clear implications for the battlefield. Gays and lesbians — even those who follow the policy — are prevented from performing optimally, which may affect the readiness of military units."

Okay, but here's the methodology: "Researchers instructed gay and lesbian participants not to reveal their sexual orientation while engaging in an eight to ten minute conversation, then asked them to take a spatial reasoning test — adopted from an Army intelligence test — and hold an exercise grip for as long as possible. Those asked to keep quiet about being gay in the preceding conversation were able to hold an exercise grip for 11 seconds, compared to an average of 23 for the control group; they also got 20 percent more questions wrong on the spatial reasoning test. "

We already knew (from Unfriendly Fire) that DADT was causing them to keep soldiers that wanted to leave and to recruit those who wouldn't normally cut the mustard, including a serious convicted felon who went on to rape an Iraqi girl and then murder her and her family. Now Slate is reporting (http://www.salon.com/news/feat.....ws/feature) that the military is being forced to hire neo-Nazis, which will only contribute to the fascist violence that cost the lives of Dr. George Tiller and Officer Stephen Johns.

@Alex: And it isn't unreasonable to think that one of these guys, God forbid, might take a shot at President Obama when they get back. He ought to repeal DADT and kick these Nazis out for his own safety, if for no other reason.

Interesting study. It basically is trying to say that if you have to lie about who you are it increases your spatial reasoning and physical endurance. I wonder if that goes for gays and lesbians in the private sector that are forced to stay closeted for one reason or another.

@galefan2004: I think you meant to say decreases?

@Jem: You are correct. Oops! I even knew what I meant to say and didn't say it. My bad. Apologies. I think a study should be done on how living in the closet might decrease spatial reasoning and physical endurance. In my own experiences, when I'm in the closet and not being myself I can't help but to be somewhat depressed, but when I'm embracing who I am, I am much more happy, and that leads to better reasoning and endurance.

I think the DADT policy is a good one. What the policy says to both gays and hetrosexuals is yes, there are gay people in the military and you are going to have to get over it.

It says to gays look, we have men and women who are armed and are going to be needed, just as you, to help keep the country and it's interests secure. You are going to have to keep what you do sexually to yourselves or in your groups amongst yourselves but do not flaunt it to keep the peace.

When soldiers go to their commanding officer to "come out" the officer no longer asks who did you have contact with. In the majority of most cases the officer is going to check to see if you were harrassed and want to know who was doing it in order to keep you, the needed recruit, in the unit because you are experienced. They no longer conduct witch hunts because chances are the officer you are talking to might be grateful of the policy for "personal reasons" themselves. That is just how many gays who do not complain are in the military. There are also gay men and women in the military whom in civilian life you and I would not want to work with because of their personalities.

When you see a soldier on tv complaining about being thrown out don't rule out he/she might be an arrogant ass who brought it on themselves. Mouth off to the wrong officer or keep on pissing off you subordinates and they will watch you like a hawk for any reason what-so-ever to get even. These are human beings you are dealing with here. Remember the naval officer who figured it was ok to visit gay websites while out in the middle of the ocean on a ship filled with men? Who in civilian life could do that while working and not face reprimand? Very few of us, huh?

The military is not the place for muscle marys to ride on a tank wearing the latest butt highlighting briefs International Male has to offer. Case closed. Discussion over. There was no don't ask, don't tell when I was in the military and I can tell you there were plenty of us in the military who simply kept our mouths shut and did not pout because there were no gay bars on the post. You said when you went into that recruiting office that you accept the conditions of obey all commands and keep your mouth shut about your sexual orientation or not going around asking people if they are gay are conditions you agreed to. Along with working like a slave a very low pay, which many do not discover is the case until the day they arrive for basic training. From that day they try to figure a way out of it. Trust me, I was at Ft. Leonard Wood in Mo. and saw it everyday in new recruits who came in after 1975 when the military went all volunteer.

Rest assured 75% or better of the people protesting this law would not make it through basic training let alone an actual firefight where because of you flaunting your sexuality now you have an enemy that knows it and soldiers who know if they are captured they are going to go through even more torture at the hands of their captors because of your being allowed to parade across the battlefield screaming "I suck dick".

People get real. It is no ones business what turns you on sexually and the military is saying this. They are no different than society overall. In corporate america many a gay man was denied a promotion because he fit the social mold that his hetrosexual malcontent boss did not wanted to deal with. Anyone over 40 who has not seen situations like this has either been in business for themselves and never had to deal with it or is just an outright liar. It still goes on.

I stand with the military on this one. I see many of these officers who come forward and publicly out themselves more an opportunist who know they will make more in tv appearances promoting their soon to be published autobiographies than trying to rid the military of a "flawed policy". If it is that bad then just leave. It simply is not for everyone. It is a non-democratic society where when you are told to shut up they do not mean tomorrow morning, they mean shut up right now. You can not have a situation where a man questions why you are sending him to his death. You simply have to do what you are told. That is how a military works whether you like it or not.

@Marcus: Interesting how you did not present a counter point.

@TANK: As for Tank his/her assesment was to be expected and rest assured ignored.
