At a Saturday memorial at Moore Elementary for Asher Brown, who shot himself in the head after facing anti-gay torment at school, hundreds showed up to pay their respects outside Houston. The family only expected a few dozen. “I want them to get a big round of applause, they stood up for Asher,” says Asher’s stepfather David Truong. Asher’s uncle, a minister, led the service: “The bullies picked on my nephew because of the way he dressed, how he talked, and the fact he was small. He was a David among Goliaths.”

My heart is breaking. I hope that these deaths of these boys and young men become the stepping stone for change in this country. That bullying will not be tolerated but more so than that is to shift the attitudes that diversity is something not to be afraid of just because soemone is different than you.
It’s time parents in this country step up and start taking responsibility and actually raise their childern instead of just “having” childern- the parents of these mean, cruel, bully kids. It falls on those parents and if these kids continue to bully other childern that it should be on the parents and they must pay the price for their lack of parenting skills.
Asher, I wish you could have hung in there and I’m so sorry that the pain was too much for you to endure. Rest in peace little buddy.
