Jesse Walters would like to be elected to a seat on the Miami Shores Village Council in Florida. At least one person does not want that to happen, because Walters is, a “faggot.”
The openly gay would-be politico has seen his campaign signs defaced, slapped with the word “faggot” over his head. Police have been working to take the signs down and dust them for prints.
“It’s unsettling. I feel sad that somebody would do that,” Walters says. “You kind of feel a little concerned for your family and your home. It does make you a little scared that somebody’s going to slash your tires or throw a brick through your window at night or something.” Walters’ campaign had distributed mailers to homes in the community; they featured a photo of him with his partner of 23 years David Traupman and their 15-month old daughter. Naturally this disgusted some recipients — because ew, gay dads, right? — so much they had to run around town and scrawl dirty words on yard signs.
How about we take this to the next level?

Miami Shores elections are Tuesday.

Whoever has been vandalizing those signs should be caught and hung up by their Buster Browns, but Mr. Walters should have known there would be backlash when he published pictures of his (somewhat unconventional) family. He doesn’t desreve it, but he should have had the foresight to know this.

I, for one, am voting for him. These vandal’s don’t represent the overall sentiment in Miami Shores – having grown up there, I can say that overall, it’s very accepting, and has more gay couples than many suburbs.
