Au Naturale?

“Australian researchers said Wednesday they have developed a means of producing a “natural condom” which could prevent the spread of AIDS. The Melbourne researchers said they believe men could reduce their risk of contracting the HIV virus, which causes the deadly disease AIDS, by applying the female hormone, estrogen, to their penis once a week. University of Melbourne researcher Professor Roger Short said that use of an estrogen cream could quadruple the thin layer of the protein keratin on the skin and thereby provide a natural defensive layer. “You create what you could call a natural condom,” [said] Short.” [BreitBart]

Um…researchers…here is an FYI for you. Most (but not all) of the time it’s not about protection, it’s about the self destructive nature that a lot of gay men carry around with them.

Are you referring to barebacking, Dub?

Wasn’t Alan Turing, famed computer scientist, forced to take large doses of estrogen to block his gay yearnings? Estrogen on your dick could mean that no one will suck it and you might not be able to get it up! ;-)

ummm…
and am i supposed to shove estrogen cream up my ass? will this also keep a “naturally protected” top from cumming in someones ass?

interesting what we can learn in science but this seems to have little to no merit in a practical world application.

fredo777: BB’ing is one part or symptom.

The are tons of ways to harm or slowly kill yourself.

BB’ing isn’t the only way to get that accomplished.

BB’ing might be a symptom of a larger problem.

Focusing on the symptom forces us to ignore the larger issues that might be causing it.

fictional invincibility, resignation or acquiescence, pleasure seeking (it feels better), nihilism, self-destruction, internalized homophobia, survivor’s guilt, unspoken ageism within gay community that it’s better to live fast and die relatively younger rather than living until say 80 and alone?

Since most HIV is transmitted from top to bottom, it seems unlikely that a thicker-skinned penis would offer many men much protection. When it is transmitted bottom to top it is generally because the skin is compromised by a sore or scratch.

I just googled the “researcher.” His previous claim was that a lemon-juice douche would protect women from HIV, and a lemon-juice wash would protect men.

And oh look, here come the men in white coats, coming to take him away.

Yes, I suppose it is just a symptom. I was just focusing on the actual physical act, though.

Aside from beating the message of how unsafe it is over their heads, how can we get through to the self-destructive set?

fredo777: I know what you were trying to say, I wasn’t refering to a single act, and you can’t/shouldn’t reduce self-destruction down to a single act.

Now…as to how we get through to the “self-destructive set”(as you put it)…THAT might be a more important question that I don’t have the answer for.

Also, keep in mind each and everyone of us has the ability to develope a self-destruction problem. This “self-destructive way” isn’t an “us” and “them” problem.

Also, this problem isn’t one that’ll be worked out in an online thread.

Dub, I’m aware that it isn’t as cut-and-dry as “you terrible BB lot” vs. us, but I suppose I was just focusing on the BB fetishists for now. Of course this won’t be worked out in the blogosphere, but I’m wondering out loud how we can at least make some small impact.

fredo777:I guess the only thing to do is show love and offer help when they finally figure out they need and want it.

Dub, I agree with you on that. I think more love (from others + self-love/self-worth) could prove very beneficial in getting more of us to value our lives.

We as a community cannot come together to really deal with all the numerous issues that lead gay men to be ambivalent about condom use, resistant to condom use, or have a risk fetish.

Those who even suggest we as a community should be doing something will be attacked from many sides, “which community,” “what more white men telling us what to do,” “who are you to tell me what to do” AD NAUSEUM

All i’ll say is that if HIV still was a certain terminal illness and if we did not have some socialized medicine (ADAP, medicaid) for those with HIV, people would be a hell lot less ambivalent and less resistant. Those risk fetishers on the other hand have deeper problems (e.g, internalized self hatred of some sort).

RE: Above, Larry Kramer said it all in his last speech which was published (The tragedy of todays gays) …and it landed on deaf ears throughout our communities.

look…the only way to really solve the AIDS problem is test everyone and ship those HIV positive people out to the desert and ‘nuke them all. mean i know…but its a solution
