Australian boxer and internationally-renowned idiot Anthony Mundine has made his position clear: homosexuality is bad, Aboriginals can’t be gay, and it’s OK for him to say that because some of his friends are homosexuals.
Here’s one recent comments, sic throughout: “that ain’t in our culture & our ancestors would have there head for it!” and also “I got nothing against homosexuality, if you’re gay, be gay, that’s you’re choice, that’s your right in this day and age.” and “I won’t bow to the politically correct notion that it’s OK.”
Mundane, excuse us, Mundine was particularly incensed about a gay character on the show Redfern, which he deemed inappropriate for kids.
His spokesman, whose name we’ve been unable to find, made things worse. “He has a lot of homosexual friends, he’s not against gay people but in his beliefs he doesn’t support homosexuality,” he said.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Haha. OK, it’s nice to know that he has “a lot” of homosexual friends. Can you produce one? Just one single person who is gay, and who knows what Anthony says about them, and is still willing to call him a “friend”?
Previously, he described the September 11th attacks as “fighting for God’s law” and that “America brought it on themselves.” So, yeah, a real role model, this guy.
Ultimately, this is kind of a non-issue, and boils down to some dumb comments from a sports moron who nobody respected anyway.

Australians can be so backward. Do Australia’s gays even care? I hardly ever hear of any Aussie gay activism. I don’t think they even have gay marriage over there. They are light years behind so many other countries right now.

@jason smeds:
Actually they aren’t that bad, they have laws treating same sex couples equally as far as social security etc… goes, but they do not get equal treatment with things like worker compensation death benefits. The problem is, that there is a federal law against gay marriage and even though states like New South Wales and Tasmainia had pro-gay rights laws on the books, the Federal Court determined that the federal law took precedence, so they are stuck until the Feds kill that law.
As for the Aussie Boxer, does anybody notice how all these bigots lie and claim they have gay friends? I think we’re still waiting for Sarah Palin to produce the ones she claimed she had.
Ummmm Yeah
I can’t decide if he’s been hit in the face way too much or way too little.
Mack
If he doesn’t like Gays on TV then DON’T WATCH TV.
Stache99
@Cam: The equivalent would be..”some of my best friends are nig*ers”. Except it’s his PR hack saying that. I’m sure bruiser would be even less eloquent.
Merv
“Homosexuality is not a part of aboriginal culture. I know because it says so in the Bible.”
demented
So in other words, “Some of my best friends are_________.”
We’ll believe it when you produce them, man.

Obviously he’s taken too many blows to the head (or is so butt ugly that a gay aboriginal would give him a second look).

This story omits one important fact: Anthony Mundine is a Muslim. When, in the wake of 911, he made his “America brought it on themselves” comment, he had to tearfully backtrack. Not because he’d changed his views, but because he risked being barred from any lucrative fights in the US. I don’t see him backtracking on these latest comments though. He’s got less to lose. He already has a very soiled reputation in Australia. There’s respect for his athletic prowess, and making it against the odds as an Aborigine. But his many comments, conduct and associations with dubious people have made him a contentious figure .. a bit radioactive in the eyes of many.

@jason smeds: I bet you’re one of the people who say all Muslims are terrorists. Also, if you’re American and calling Australians backwards that’s laughable seeing as America is probably the most backward industrialised nation going. If you must know the majority of Australians are for gay rights, Anthony Mundine is in the minority. There are also plenty of LGBT activists here in Australia

jlfbman reporting from Australia…..Mundine is a ex footballer and boxer or in simple terms, a thug. A thug with a love of publicity and a big ego and important in his own mind. Dismissed.
Australians backward??….nah….we have electricity and my pet kangaroo is a Gay Activist!!
Aranos
Homosexuality is not part of the Arboriginals culture????
This guy has no idea. Maybe he should get himself a book on the subject before talking BS about his own people. If he still can read, that is… cause all those nasty blows to his head seem to have done some damage.

Why is Queerty writing about what a nobody said over a year ago? The “Redfern Now” (a show about the lives of indigenous people living in the inner Sydney suburb or Redfern) that Mundine took offence to aired in late October 2013 and the controversy over Mundine’s comments in early November. If you insist on only covering Australian matters when one of our sportspersons says something stupid or whenever Cori Bernardi opens his mouth at least do it in a timely fashion. In the meantime one of our few LGBT legislators lost her Senate seat due to factional wheeling and dealing and the federal opposition leader took on the Christian Lobby over their attacks on our community. You know, things that are actually important. Oh, and same-sex couples will actually be allowed to adopt soon (assuming the ALP wins the state election).
