Battlestar Gaylactica?

SPOILER ALERT: With half a season left to go, could Sci-Fi's critical darling (and our favorite way to depress ourselves) Battlestar Galactica be gaying up its cast?

While the show deals frankly with sexuality and gender roles, the only gay character on the show thus far has been Admiral Cain (Michelle Forbes) whose relationship with Gina (Tricia Helfer) turned sour after Cain found out that Gina was a frakkin' toaster, ordered her officers to interrogate and sexually assault her and then, after Gina escaped, she returned the favor by busting a cap in Cain's skull…cap.

But rumors are circulating that two BSG crew members will be revealed, not as the final Cylons, but as gay in the "The Face of the Enemy", a 10-part webisode series that begins airing this Friday, in advance of the March season premiere.

Find out who, plus a photo of some BSG-lovin', after the jump.

It's Gaeta, obviously. According to those who've seen an advance cut, Lt. Felix Gaeta (Alessandro Juliani) winds up making DRADIS contact with blink-and-you'd-have-missed-him, Lt. Hoshi (Brad Dryborough). Below's a screen cap:

Thanks for the tip! The lack of queer representation on Battlestar Galactica has been the only thing keeping it from being a fantastic viewing experience for me.

I don't know how I feel about this. Gaeta is one of the leading contenders to be the final cyclon. Couple that with Cmd. Cain, an amoral sociopathic commander, and you don't exactly have a very positive view of "the gays" in the BSG universe.

Of course, if Gaeta does not turn out to be a cyclon … I guess it depends on how the series wraps up and what Gaeta's roll ends up being.

I love you, Japhy ;)

And I find it amazing that the lack of a gay character would keep BSG from being "fantastic" to S. Come on… BSG is simply fantastic, and I for one am going to miss it a lot when it's gone. I just don't think "Caprica" will be as good…we shall see.

Being a Cylon does not mean he will turn out to be evil. There are good Cylons, especially amongst the hidden ones.

Why would anyone be surprised Gaeta is gay? His name is GAETA for frakkin sake!

I'll give "Capprica" the benefit of the doubt. Is a definite "GO"?

Yeah January 2009: LOST, 24 and BSG will all be back. And Bush will be gone! Happy Days!

At least we're being recognized on Battlestar — on Stargate Atlantis, the best we get is a posthumous "Oh, and by the way, Vega was a lesbian," and the suggestion that a recurring character will be revealed (in not entirely an unRowlingesque manner) to have been gay, once the show concludes this, its fifth and final season.

@Mad Professah: As I understand it, Caprica is a go, as a TV movie. If there is enough interest, the will make the series.

Oh yeah, no surprise about Gaeta.

Jacob over at Television Without Pity totally called this back in June.

"Gaeta is legless, but on the other hand I think he's fucking Hoshi, so that's fun."

While still fairly tepid in its treatment, BSG has gone much further than any other American sci-fi show. Even as procedural shows, situational comedies, and even the odd historical drama have dealt with same-sex relationships in an increasingly bold manner, the science fiction genre has remained a bastion of prudishness and conservatism.

Not counting video games, the Star Wars universe is completely heterosexual. Star Trek has gone through five shows and eleven movies with absolutely no LGBT characters at all. Babylon 5 vaguely mentioned homosexuality in dialogue (and it was implied that one of the main characters was bisexual). But obviously they showed nothing substantial on screen. Ditto for the Stargate series.
