Soccer star David Beckham may be branching into the wild world of acting. Marc Cherry has been kicking around the idea of hiring Becks and fellow Brit Robbie Williams for a stint on his hit soap, Desperate Housewives. Or so he says.
Discussing the show’s new gay duo, Cherry suggested Becks and Robbie appear as the couple’s queer friends.
David and Robbie are perfect to star as the new neighbours’ best friends; the gorgeous, eccentric couple flown over from Blighty (Britain). We haven’t had that kind of wow for the wives since Jesse Metcalfe left and we want it to cause such a stir when they turn out to be together. David’s keen, but though the obvious choice was to work with Tom Cruise, we wanted someone who matches him in height and well, Britishness, so Robbie is the one. They’re both funny, game for a laugh and ridiculously macho, so it should work wonderfully… The English are pitch-perfect for sending themselves up.

Is the show really slipping that low in ratings? Have all the hot gay actors in L.A. left town or have been hired? Because what we really need is another straight man allowing himself to be “emasculated” to play gay. Oh, and of course, any displays of affection are going to be on the same level as I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.

Becks is very gay friendly and is the original Metrosexual man here in the UK.
His being publically at ease with his feminine side and appearing in the UK press in a sarong etc, has had a huge cultural impact here.
I was amused by a macho football fan here who worked in my office and hated Becks for that very reason! But this guy was a homophobic twat who I used to wind-up ruthlessly.

I agree with Rowen, why can’t a gay actor play (GASP!) a gay man on TV? It should be no longer considered “courageous” for a heterosexual man to play gay on television. It’s more courageous for Hollywood to actually put gay actors to work in something other than a low-budget indie film.
