Beth is correct. When I first time heard Katy’s song I thought the same way as Beth. I got a picture into my head that this song is going to be the song to some drunken girls who start kissing each other front of the boys to make attention.

But hey, isn’t Katy doing everything for attention?

My issue with Katy Perry has nothing to do with “I Kissed A Girl” and everything to do with the song “You’re So Gay”.

Why do people forget that she did this song. It’s a diss about an ex boyfriend and the biggest insult she can find for him is to call him gay. Not homosexual gay but the “That’s So Gay” gay.

but my rant is mostly on how much the gay community gets tired of being hated on, yet we are supposed to hate everyone who is not 100% with us. i would love if everyone was 100% with us, but i recognize and respect people have to slowly come around to things that have been beaten into their heads for a very long time. i wish it were different but you cannot change human nature and i prefer to kill em with kindness, not beat em with gayness. i thought the point was to appear like everyone else… not show that we are blatantly in your face trying to fuck the machine. your way is you way, mine is mine. doesn’t make my any less gay.

Kademonster…Katy Perry has been introduced AS a lesbian. People get fraked up ideas about what sexual orientation is and what it means to be gay because of stupid songs like Katy Perry’s. I don’t listen to it, but that’s not the point. The point is a lot of other ignorant people are listening to it and getting even more ignorant. It’s not a song meant to be taken seriously just like gay women aren’t even taken seriously.

i mean, in case you have not paid any attention to Katy Perry, I kissed a girl was one of those big old joking around all in good fun kinda songs. it wasn’t mean to be taken seriously. and honestly i think it helps that you at least hav a straight singer making a song about kissing another girl a number one hit. that’s something that doesn’t happen often. and i SURE don’t see any of the main stream gay artists trying very hard to make such a blatant statement in their music. dear god. the gay community just HAS to hate someone. ever ask why so many hate us? they’re sick of the “you’re either with us or you’re against us” attitude. it’s not personally something i claim pride in being a part of. c’mon guys. grow up. if you don’t like KP, don’t listen.

PS: i don’t like either of the artists mentioned. i just happened to notice all of the outrageous comments.

Beth Ditto wasn’t ‘accusing’ Katy Perry of faking gay. That much is obvious. Ditto was making a statement about how lesbians aren’t properly represented in the media– we’re portrayed as straight girls who just kiss girls in the clubs sometimes to turn on our boyfriends. She’s pissed that horrid bicurious songs like “I Kissed a Girl” are the ones played at gay celebrations, including Dinah Shore. She’s pissed that lesbians are very rarely on the covers of gay magazines, like, say the Advocate, but Katy Perry was on it last year. The straight girls get all the attention. Actual lesbians and bisexuals are always ignored.

You know what I hated about the “I Kissed a Girl” song? The ‘it’s not what good girls do’ line. Like lesbian sex is the most risky, morally objectionable thing ever.

Don’t forget that MTV – that purported “friend” of the GLBT community – has a huge double standard which translates into promotion of female bisexuality but not male bisexuality. You saw this in the way its bisexual dating show promoted the “hot” female bisexual but couldn’t bring itself to do the same for the male bisexual. Male bisexuals were completely excluded, as was anything that might indicate an erotic male-male interaction. It reflects their discomfort with the male-male erotic interaction at the level of the mainstream.

MTV can go fuck itself – it is no friend of the GLBT community.

Good on you, Beth, for having the courage to criticize these female pop singers who are using their purported bisexuality as part of a marketing strategy. No doubt, this strategy is dreamed up by the grubby straight male executives who populate the record company headquarters.

It’s interesting that you don’t see male pop singers doing the same. No doubt, the male pop singers are told by these very same executives that guy-guy is gross and not acceptable, unlike girl-girl.

Beth Ditto does make a good point. She’s pointing to how these basically straight female pop singers are using suggestions of lesbianism as a marketing ploy, not to prop up gay rights but to prop up the fetishes of sleazy straight guys who don’t really care about our rights.
