Bible-Thumping Boxer-Turned-Politician Says Gays Should Be “Put To Death”

Manny Pacquiao might not support gay marriage, but that doesn’t mean he has to quote some of the most backward Bible verses on homosexuality when talking about it.

In an interview with the Conservative Examiner, the six-time world title-winning boxer quoted Leviticus 20:13 in crafting a reaction to Obama’s recent support of gay marriage.

Said Pacquiao: “God’s words first … obey God’s law first before considering the laws of man… If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

Really? Need he be reminded Leviticus says all sorts of crazy antiquated shit like, don’t wear clothing woven of two materials, put to death people who curse their father or mother, shellfish are an abomination, etc.

And what about adultery, a sin that’s warned against in the 10 Commandments? L.A. Weekly points out Pacquiao, who’s now an elected politician in the Philippines, is allegedly not so faithful to his wife:

It’s been pointed out to us that the very married Pacquiao hasn’t exactly been by-the-book when it comes to his own union—allegedly. He has been linked in reports to a Filipina actress named Krista Ranillo.

These religious zealots. Always talking the talk and usually not walking the walk.

I do not understand Christians quoting Old Testament as the Law of God. Old Testament, or Mosaic Laws, are laws for Jews. Those laws about not eating Shrimps or keeping short hair, are covenants of cleanliness that Jews have with their God. When Jesus Christ came, he allowed Gentiles to be able to receive God(God of Abraham)’s salvation. Well, basically he trashed Old Testament laws(which demanded that you be pure), and brought a whole new way people connect with God. He bridged the gap between Jews and Gentiles.

So in short, stuff in Leviticus or whatever should not be in Christian doctrine. It’s what sets Christianity apart from Judaism.

Now, I am not a Christian, but this is what I know from taking Western Civ classes. So, if I know what the New Covenant is, then freaking Christians should know this too!!! ARGH.

      Wait a second.

When quoting the bible to condemn people, be careful what you wish for. Matthew 5:27 says if you look at a woman lustfully you have committed adultery. Adultery in the bible is punishable by death. So according to the bible any heterosexual male can be put to death.

This is a case where “it gets worse”: the very last sentence in Leviticus (he quoted a different part of Leviticus) states, “These are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses to tell the Israelites at Mount Sinai.” Looks like this “Christian” didn’t read the whole thing before he spouted off his “you are sinnnners” thing.

OK. I understand that you are upset. I’m upset too. But please do not think that the entirety of the Philippines can be represented by someone as stupid and primitive as Manny Pacquiao. If anything, he only represents one of the 7,107 islands in the country. I would know since I lived there for years.

The whole “sleeping on the floor” bit is a severely misguided imagery considering the fact that there are many modernized areas in the country. But I agree. It is hot considering the fact that it sits near the equator.

However, I implore you to not think ill-will of the whole country just because of one man. Are there religious nut jobs in the Philippines? Absolutely. But there are also a lot of Pro LGBT movements in the country. Plus, the nation itself is not as bad as other areas in the world where LGBT are put to death. I mean, for crying out loud, THE CURRENT STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT OF ITS NUMBER ONE STATE UNIVERSITY IS LGBT.

@kendoll: “On Easter, Filipinos lined up to have nail spikes driven through their hands. More of that! It’s crazyland for sure.”

LOL. You are severely misinformed, child. First of all, the penitensya is a practice done in lent not easter.

Secondly, people do NOT line up for it since it is not even a popular practice. It hasn’t been so for the LAST TWENTY YEARS.

Thirdly, it is not even legal in a great number of areas in the country. A lot of people oppose it due to the health risks involved and generally, the stupidity of the act itself.

Fourthly, need I remind you that since there is a religious conflict in the country, NOT ALL FILIPINOS ARE CATHOLIC. Plus, not all Catholics in the country are devout. Actually, a great number of Catholics in the Philippines are only Catholic because some of the best schools in the nation–Ateneo, La Salle–are run by the Catholic Church.

Finally, Manny Pacquiao is a poorly educated imbecile raised in some far flung province where the resources are not well injected upon the economy. If Americans have red-state hicks who would shoot you for being gay, Filipinos have people like Manny Pacquiao. Do you know what the difference is? People like him would spit Biblical hellfire and brimstone bu he would not physically attack you for being gay. That’s one of the things I learned from staying in that country. There are a lot of homophobes for sure. But their homophobia has NEVER transgressed to the brutal level of some US states.

I wouldn’t be surprised if his religious stupidity is due to the fact that he was once poor. And now, the nouveau rich is milking it for all it’s worth.

The man is an ignorant and arrogant prick, to be honest. Remember when the world was scared shitless because of the H1N1 virus? Trust me. This man DOES NOT represent the Filipinos well. He is but a tragic droplet of a very complicated cultural landscape brought on by the VERY IMPORTANT FACT THAT THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS AN ARCHIPELAGO that only became a country due to the necessity brought on by the war against Spain in the 1500s.

(Yes I know I have posted this already. But I sincerely feel as though I have to rehabilitate the LGBT landscape of that country because of this stupid boxer.)

The “death penalty” in Leviticus is just a listing of the most extreme penalty for crimes, most of the people punished under those laws simply paid a fine. The exception is for things like murder where it says that “no ransom” can be paid.

And what is his point of quoting Leviticus specifically any way? There are New Testament passages which condemn gay sex without condemning gay people to death, why not just pick one of those unless you really wanted to focus on the execution part?
