Obama's blackness gets highlighted in all sorts of shades today. First journo Amir Taheri's recent NY Post piece comes under fire for its explicit "racial innuendo," then the Clinton campaign gets accused of blackening their rival. [HuffPo and MG]

I think when the democratic nominee is selected, one of these two conclusions will be drawn:
1. People so much didn't want a woman as president that they were willing to vote for a black man; or
2. People so much didn't want a black man as president that they were willing to vote for a woman.
It's inevitable Since both leading democratic contenders are members of protected minority demographic groups, I think the Republicans are just getting started with the snide stuff.
I'm voting for the democratic candidate.
Well, we already know that half of the republican ticket is an old white guy. It'll be interesting to see how the repubs move on the veep: do they go with a young white guy to balance mccain's olditude, or a woman, or a conservative of color? Or do they go for the trifecta of condie rice, although that just underlines the four-more-years-of-bush theme?
And John, I think you're a little too hard on the dems: one of these folks, a woman or a black man, will be the nominee. So far, they're splitting the vote pretty evenly, which either means (under your scenario) that the democratic party is comprised 50-50 of racists and sexists. I prefer my happy little place where dems are voting based not so much on gender or race (OK, some are, and in droves) as on more cynical bases such as who is more electable or who panders more effectively to a given voter's very special interests.
But yeah, I agree: I'm voting for the democrat too.
I'm not voting for the Democrat if the Democrat is Obama and that's not because I'm racist. It's because I believe he should have a longer résumé than Bush Jr in order to be president. Obama is wholly unqualified to be president. I'd probably be all over an Obama candidacy in 8 years, but he's not ready, yet. I think it takes a lot of nerve to run for a position you're so terribly unqualified for.
I won't vote for McCain, though. I'll likely vote for the Socialist candidate at that point.
The first, New York Post article seemed well written; I don't see the 'racist innuendo' that Mario Ruiz sees. In fact, I see the opposite: a celebration of Obama's multi-ethnic heritage. I disagree with rest of the Post's article, but it's not racist.
I don't see the racism in Hillary's ad either. It's a pretty sharp and effective attack on Obama, to be sure … but the claims that it makes him 'blacker' to scare white Americans is silly – if only because he looks pretty sharp and handsome in the video. That's not the way to scare people.
And before the usual suspects jump in: yes, I know there is racism in America. And sexism, and homophobia, and all the rest. But disagreeing with a man of color is not racist in and of itself.
I'm Ignorant, someone please share the resume that Mrs. Clinton has to answer a phone at 3 am. Has she ever handled a crises? Has she de-toured or resolved an immediate attack on America or did she help search and conquer the ware abouts of Ben Ladin. Bottom line is… no one person can predict a crisis imposed on america and will un doubtedly use great judgement while following the most strenous protocol as President. So far the only resume I have seen is a resume that endorsed the war (there goes here judgement), supports and hurrrays nafta (there goes our economy due to terrible trade agreements), un-successful in creating health care for all when she had the chance and is to grounded in Washington politics that we all want to change.
I'd much rather have a resume built on new ideas than old un-accomplished ones. Its like hiring a 30 year veteran physician whose specialty is cancer when HIV/Aids is your illness. I think i'll look for that recent grad that graduated top of his class and has majored primarily in infectious disese to be that doctor.
In that case, Brian, you should take the mayor of Honolulu. Please. He fits the bill. Top of his class, Harvard, blah blah blah. Petty and vindictive, sure, but top of his class.
For all the venom among their supporters, people are missing the fact that these two candidates have pretty much the exact same platform. And voting histories (Obama voted for the Patriot Act, so he's as culpable as the rest of 'em). We're arguing about style.
huffpo and the nypost are deplorable sources of information, especially these days.
non story.
Great BitchRepublic.
So, in effect, you would rather have McCain in office than Obama.
Yes, I would rather have McCain in office than Obama because in 4 years Hillary can go up against McCain and take him out.
it's a shame that we would vote for a man BECAUSE he has black skin or a woman BECAUSE she has a vagina. that's the bottom line that I'm picking up from all of this. you should vote on principle. Now I personally believe both Clinton and Obama are very qualified candidates (Clinton moreso) but voting for them just to get a black man or a woman into office is a dangerous state of mind.
You would rather have McCain in office than Obama…
That speaks volumes.
For some of us, McCain in office would be preferable to Obama in office, but that's just me, a lowly Republican.
Ah, that's right.
I almost forgot there were gay republicans.
