Longtime political columnist Robert Novak, who has been in print since 1963, is retiring immediately in the wake of his brain tumor diagnosis. [Sun-Times]
The man is certainly imperfect and he has definitely used his share of dirty tricks and blind items, but as far as Republican pundits go he’s no where near the worst. I’m not sad to see him retire, but I’m wary to see who fills his shoes.
He has my sympathy for his brain tumor, that is a terrible thing to be dealing with. And as a rightwing political hack, it is a credit to him. First of all, in order to have a brain tumor, one needs to have a brain, which sets him on a much higher level than most other rightwing political columnists. Secondly, that he would consider an affliction of the brain sufficient reason for retiring indicates a sense of ethics that I would not have imagined existed anywhere in the media.
So now we are to be deprived of his political savvy… in the midst of his personal tragedy, he has chosen perhaps for the first time in his life to do what is best for the country. I respect that. Every dark cloud really does have a silver lining.
This is painful — my tongue is bleeding from biting it. I despise Novak, but my mom worked with brain cancer patients for 25 years and it can be pretty horrible.
How about wishing him a long and peaceful retirement?
The man is a douche, but I’d never wish a brain tumor on anyone.
Maybe someone will run him down in a crosswalk and take him out his misery, or just shoot him. They shoot jackasses don’t they?
