If I don’t get a TV show next year because someone looks up my Wikipedia and it says ‘openly gay,’ then it’s worth the risk because I’ve had so many years being openly gay and proud of myself as a role model… Especially for me on Broadway, of all places, I know people who are gay but living a bit of a lie in my own community. And I’m thinking, ‘You’re on Broadway! You do musical theater! Of all places to hide yourself? Are you kidding? Enjoy. Be yourself.’”
— Max von Essen, currently starring the Broadway production of An American In Paris, in a wide-ranging interview with The Daily Beast

He’s a charmer! HEY BRIAN, GIVE THIS GUY A ROLE IN YOUR NEXT X-MEN FLICK!

he sounds as if hes had life long support from family and friends and the fact that hes currently “out” in a profession that for the most part does not discriminate against gay people indicates that he has been very fortunate. good for him. not everyone is so fortunate, coming out to family, friends, coworkers or neighbors is not always the best choice for many people, including people on broadway. coming out is a personal choice no one should be outed or forced out, the only exceptions being those who are gay and activly work against other gays. one size does not fit all.

Also sounds like a knock against Jon Groff for his comments about being closeted when doing Spring Awakening. Like he said, you’re in musical theater! Who the hell cares?

Oh the shade.
“Not naming any names but certain people….”
I think it’s mean. Of course it was messed up for Jonathan Groff to be closeted at 21 (on Broadway, yet). He’s now confident enough to be honest about having been dishonest — I think that’s worth admiring, not taking swipes at.

Another sanctimonious homo. What’s new? (~_~)

It’s kinda nonsensical to try to say he’s talking about Jonathan Groff, who has been out for many years now, just because you read this around the same time you read the Groff piece. I would look at the production he’s in now, if anything, for possible unnamed names who are pretending not to be gay.
