Buju Banton’s Cocaine Arrest Will Probably Make Him More Popular

115921_Buju_LKH_

Not that felony convictions immediately disqualify someone for a Grammy Award, but Buju Banton’s arrest by DEA agents in Miami late last week might influence voters to, uh, shun the guy.

Buju (nee Mark Anthony Myrie), is in federal prison and facing charges of “conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilos of cocaine,” reports the Miami Herald. Which, if the allegations are true, are great news — because we know how much America’s music fans always abandon artists after they earn a rap sheet, particularly one involving massive amounts of blow.

But even if Buju’s drug arrest won’t slow his record sales (we imagine the opposite happening), at least we don’t have to rely on a seemingly endless boycott effort to shut down all of his American tour dates.

no need to worry about the heart attack, the grammy, or his continuing to endanger innocent gay-les-trans people with his genocidal BoomByeBye….buju’s charges carry life imprisonment in jail. And he’s such an ass, that I just can’t see him winning the hearts or minds of any jurors to escape that. Karma is a b*tch, ain’t it buju?

I am saddened by this arrest. Buju has done lots of work over the past years to make up for Boom Bye Bye, a song written very early in his long career. I have big respect for Buju and for the LBGT community, and I think misguided protests against Banton should end. Focus efforts instead on artists who are actively singing against the gay community. Buju learned his lesson on that particular front… Also, symbolic violence is common in lots of music, and calls for violence are not necessarily meant to be taken literally. That being said, I will not listen to Boom Bye Bye or other overtly hateful songs. However, Buju Banton continues to be one of my favorite artists of all time. Give him a listen, oh ye of open minds!

Like what? Like continuing to perform “Boom Bye Bye”? Like allegedly joining a dozen others in breaking into a house and beating six men believed to be gay in 2004? Like refusing to sign the Reggae Compassionate Act? Like stating, in October of this year, “there is no end to the war between me and faggot”? Yeah, his commitment to overcome his reputation is staggering.

Lurker is an ignoramus. Buju called for our death, sang that call hundreds of times, sell thousands of copies of the album, of course gays and anyone who supports our community should be outraged; advocating genocide is a line we should never cross. Don’t tell us to give his music a listen until he apologizes for and denounces that song, which continues to hurt god’s gay-lesbian children across the globe.

That said, all the protests are over cuz buju will only be performing at the prison rodeo from here on out. good riddance to nasty haters.

Fake Name, Hey Eric!, and seymour: no, I do not work for Buju’s record company. this is just an issue that I really care a lot about, because I feel caught in the middle. I was raised by a lesbian mother, and remember having early discussions with her about the “that faggot” refrain in a Public Enemy song. I was raised to listen carefully to messages in the media, and to think critically about their significance. I was raised to disavow hate speech. I am also a passionate reggae and dancehall fan. Buju Banton is one of my favorite all time artists. Being a fan of modern reggae in general raises some qualms for me. In addition to being very homophobic, Jamaican and Rastafarian cultures (which should not be automatically conflated) have some really questionable views on women’s rights and roles. But I also think that reggae, and Buju Banton’s music specifically, can be uplifting, peaceful, and beautiful. The question for me is how much I can cast judgement on another culture, and when hateful music becomes true hate speech, and also if an artists good works can outweigh their bad ones. I admit I may not be fully aware of the whole story here in terms of Buju’s works since Boom Bye Bye, but I do believe he no longer performs that song, and certainly not here in America. I think those of you calling me ignorant need to reexamine your own knee jerk reactions. I am truly trying to see this issue from both sides. It is not an open and shut case for me. Or perhaps there is no way to rationally justify my love of Buju Banton (the artist) with my love of the gay community, so I will have to accept that paradox… Just please know that I have given this issue a lot of thought, and I am not a troll. I am trying to bring some nuance to this discussion.

Lurker, I really encourage you to examine your role as an apologist for a murder musician. I do not understand how you can believe that a message of peace and beauty that excludes gays to the point of advocating their murder is one that anyone can support. The only point in Banton’s favor is that at least he doesn’t hide behind thtat “love the sinner, hate the sin” bullshit.

OK, but I also enjoyed the film Wall E, made by Disney. The Song of the South is an incredibly racist Disney cartoon from their early days. Walt Disney was himself a vitriolic anti-semite. Can I justify enjoying Disney’s later works? Charleton Heston had disgusitng politics. Is it ok for me to like The Planet of the Apes?

I also think murder musician is a bit harsh, unless you are ready to extend that moniker to any musician who talks/sings/raps about killing. Words and actions are very different things. Yes, it is much scarier when it singles a group out because of their sexual orientation…

OK, enough devils advocate, maybe you are right, I will examine my views on Buju, dancehall, etc. But please take the time to listen to Buju’s anti-violence song “Murderer”, or even his AIDS-awareness song (which I actually don’t like all that much, musically) “Willy Don’t be Silly”.

What are this blog’s views on Eminem, out of curiosity? Especially if his hugging Elton John on stage changed your views at all…

      Hey Eric!

      Lurker…

Here’s my point…buju’s song BoomByeBye continues to do harm. Continues to encourage violence against the most defenceless people in his or any other culture. I’m sure he’s a nice guy except for the whole violent homophobia thing…and I’m sure that he says some semidecent things elsewhere….but he called for MY death and i’m not willing to overlook that. Why would I need to delve into the rest of the songs in his catalog for an excuse to forgive him for a terrible thing he did that he hasn’t even apologized for?

And I think a better example is the racist movie Birth of a Nation. Sure DW Griffith like buju was just parroting the ignorance of his culture. But does that mean that I have to overlook the hatefulness at the heart of the movie? Nope. (Though if you ask me, Disney and most media companies are corrupt and I don’t have any defence for them.)

And I personally have no views of eminem. He did apologize or whatever…i don’t care…but if you show me song lyrics where he unequivocally called for my death, I will certainly start to resent eminem more than I do. I presume he’s done some stupid anti-gay lyrics….but hasn’t crossed the line that buju and beenie did of calling for MY death. I just take it personally.

That said, this discussion has drifted into the theoretical. The campaign to stop buju from coming to our backyards is over, because he’s not gonna get out of the yard he’s in for a long, long time.

Meanwhile, I hope other Jamaican musicians have figured out that your career is the US is a non-starter if you call for death to gay people. That’s a positive, no? And, all the conspiracy theorists at dancehall sites are acting like “the gays” set up buju for this arrest; obviously not…but hopefully it will make them think twice the next time they write their ignorant hatred into a song.

If buju had just stuck with ganja and one love, he’d still be home banging some chick at his mansion. Instead he’s gonna be the one getting banged…

First of all I am not a racist! I have fought for civil rights my entire life. I have many wonderful black friends and have had relationships with a couple of black men. I was not speaking of African-Americans and should have clarified that. I was referring to people of color in other countries such as Uganda and Jamaica who feel it is perfectly fine to advocate death to gay people. (In response to Hey Eric!) As for David Duke, the Pope, Christians…etc. they may hate us but I do not remember them calling for our deaths. I just cannot understand how people that have felt discrimination can be so willing to discriminate against others.

It’s amazing. A song that came out over a decade ago (almost 2) and that is not performed by the artiste and is not getting much (if any) airplay, and people are claiming that even now it is contributing to violence against gays in America. Let’s look at things logically. Who are the greatest proponents of violence against gay persons in the USA? Demonstrate to me that these are big fans of Buju and then maybe I can reconsider your argument about the harm that it is doing even now.

To the person who talks about karma – be careful how you judge others. You’re doing the same thing you claim Buju does, i.e., judge and condemn you. Karma is a bitch and it might come back to bite you with a bigger problem than Buju is experiencing now.

      peace out!

Sorry, Bob, but you sound like a racist to me. It is a very myopic view of the homophobic world community to point to Uganda and Jamaica and pronounce that they are the extreme enemies of gay/lesbian civil liberties.

Open your eyes just a little, and you can see extreme homophobia espoused by members of all races:

Check out Joe.My.God. post yesterday about executions of gay teens taking place in Iran. Check out the many posts here and in the gay blogs about executions of gays in Iraq, without the blind-eyed approval of the US military. Check out the laws being passed in Eastern Europe. Check out the races of the gay bashers here in the US and MOST are white. Check out who killed Matthew Shepherd. A few days ago the blogs had pictures of a “cleaned up” “tattoos covered over” white supremist on trial for stabbing a gay kid to death. And don’t forget those wonderfully white Aryan Germans who slaughtered gays along with Jews, Gypsies, Poles, etc. And don’t pretend for a second that the Catholic Church and its missions around the world haven’t killed gays/lesbians in their various Inquisitions over the centuries.

Your claim that you are not a racist because you have black friends sounds as hollow as Sarah Palin’s claim to have gay friends.

If you are not a racist, then open your eyes and see.

Buju, have been one of my greatest Idols and still will continue to be. Many reggae stars speaks about homos and gays, this have and always will be the root of reggae, way before Bob Marley, even roots rock reggae. Bob Marley sing “man to man is so unjust” many did not knock him. Buju later came and sing Boom bye bye, still many did not knock, because the people did not really started to understand reggae untill the late 90s. Reggae music is deeply apart of the Jamaican culture, in many areas we would rather have a known killer than someone who claim to be gay. I do not speak against gays, but in the same aspect I do not nor will I speak for gays. If someone that is gay need help I can be there for that person in support to help them stop being gay, but never to support this habbit. Buju will be fine, he will get off easy since he was not even present when the drugs was purchase, this will just boost his lyrics. Banton will be out with an album soon “FIRE PON DEM, MI RAWSE”

I’m hoping for some kind of significant conviction or else an OD. The man who helped incite so many murders in Jamaica deserves no better.

I’m also hoping for some safety for the gay Jamaicans from the nutjobs like the ones who are showcasing their stupidity and hatred on here. It’s intensely mind-numbing to actually see somebody say they’d prefer a killer to a homosexual. Let’s give Judail the option of being locked in a room with a known killer or a gay and see if they change their mind.

I bring you real news and the truth, but you cursed me. what else do you want, I’m bringing up the life style we live in Ja. I am Jamaican, I know the heart of Jamaica, we will never okay or give any forms of rights for being gay. Being gay itself is a sickness, but too many big high officials in the state either love the life too much or just plain out under cover. Being gay is just a rude slackness disorder, that no one want to contest, well one country in the whole entire world said no! not allow and all the gays cry.

Hi. I have never been on this site. Based on the comments and venom against Buju Banton I can see this is a gay community.

I am heterosexual and certainly have a different view on the whole Buju/Gay issue.

Let me just say that this over sensitivity by the gay community to Buju Banton actually helps him remain relevant.

Ever heard the phrase – ‘Let the jackass bray’?

      Stop giving Buju free press!

Rather than spitting fire and wishing him ill-will, the gay community would come out smelling like roses by repeatedly stating they would Pray for Buju AND THE MANY OTHERS LIKE HIM, for example.

Walk the higher road. Rather than these knee-jerk reactions every time the word ‘Buju’ is mentioned. YOU ARE the ones keeping him relevant.

Hi, the guy is not too bright. Combine that with a microphone, a sense of ‘power’, and enough time and he was bound to get himself in a nasty position, the one he is in now. Is this really the manner of man you want to give the power to energize you?

Also, I totally agree with Lurker Berserker’s comments on here.

The gay people shoulda know that’s because of the african-jamaican religion, it make singers like buju, sizzla, or bounty killer, talking about them values and beliefs. If they are against fag’s, just let them be. The freedom of speech was aloud at many time ago. I believe that’s a crossroad against the great artist that buju is. If he’s guilty for cocain possesion, it’s a disappointment for all the people who love reggae and rastafarai culture. If someone does not know, this culture is extremely against cocain consumption, and gay people are the first taking it deliberately. If i was against something, i can express myself, if gays are against something they have rights to, even rastas have rights, and him (buju) has his own right to talk about what he wants without being judge and penalized for that, cause if gays don’t like his music just don’t listen. OK? So simple. I will defend him until the end.

Fuck using religion as an excuse for telling lies and spreading hatred and death threats and anyone who passes off killing people as a value is disgusting, as are those who defend them. Banton is free to sing about anything he wants, but his right to speak doesn’t give him the right to a venue. We’re just as free to convince venues not to book him as he is to sing his drivel. Nor is his right to speak more important than the right of gay people to live in peace, but that didn’t stop Banton and his fellow thugs from beating men so badly that one of them lost an eye.

Gay people were the first to take cocaine recreationally? That’s just moronic, and another attempt to excuse Banton’s coke-fiend bad behaviour on someone else. Oh well, he’ll be in prison for the rest of his miserable life, soon to be swept into the trash pile of history and forgotten like the loser scumbag he is.

Perhaps certain people “be hungry, … be smelly, even uneducated, have killers among us, . . .have thives, . . . are fools, ” etc., because they are amoral bigots who persecute and revile GLBTQ people.

Why should anyone be surprised when people who live amoral, sinful lives of evil, act out such evil in song (using the term loosely in this case).

Clearly, if God approved of the pervasive social depravity that Buju is a sterling example of, Jamaica would be blessed, prosperous and well-fed, instead of full of thieves and drug fiends.

Homophobes like Buju are the true heirs of Sodom, the truest sodomites around.

OK, all the hateful comments in support of Buju Banton after my early comments have really soured me on all of this. I can’t stand in league with these biggots. But I would like to leave a (perhaps) final thought:

Buju Banton is a target for the gay community because he is low hanging fruit, an easy trarget to pick on. Jamaica is an exceedingly poor country, and even top musicians rarely gain true wealth. Touring in the US is a major revenue source for these struggling artists. And since 9/11, getting a visa is all the more difficult and therefore valuable for Jamaican performers. You can really effectively mess with Buju’s tour with protest, and deny the west coast from seeing him live. I’m sure this hurts Buju’s bottom line, and may be why he was foolish enough to try this cocaine deal. OK, so you have won on that front in the past.

But Buju is really a tiny small fry that you have inflated to some big satan. I wish the gay community would focus their ire more on the homophobes doing real damage domestically: right wing christians. This incredibly wealthy, vitriolic, and empowered community has and is doing so much more to harm gays and gay rights than one little Jamaican artist.

I submit that the gay community is making a mountian out of a molehill with protests against Buju Banton, because it distracts from their (our) true powerlessness to take on the actual, monstrous enemies of homosexuality. Yes, Boom Bye Bye is hateful. Yes, I can see why the gay community would have little love for Buju. But let’s be clear who the real, significant enemies are here, and focus efforts against them.

And Judail: your hate scares me. I am a huge fan of reggae, and I am fascinated with Jamaican culture. But you are about as bad an ambassador as the island could hope for. I also think you are misinterpreting Marley’s “Man to man is so unjust” lyric, which I believe actually refers to the hate and injustices we inflict upon each other (much as you do with your comments). Although some have indeed questioned if Marley was also a homophobe:

Is Jamaica a Hateful country for gays, the answer is yes. dose Jamaica the country tolerate gay activities. not at all. even if the country passes law to allow gay activity the people would not allow it. Jamaica is truly a christian country, alot of jamaican men and myself are Homophobic. God himself destroy the city of Sodom, because of homosexual activity. I will not be among a gay unless I must. I had a friend that was gay, I told him that I cannot be in the congregation of the Ungodly. Psalm 1. Great men and Great prophets hate this behavior and so will I. I will not tell or preach to someone to go out and harm gays, no they must still be loved, but the behavior stinks. men that wants to be women, how shameful. men that should be making a difference in the community, but yet want to treat their butthole like a cat. bringing disgrace to themself and their fathers. this nastyness come from alot of broken homes in America.

      1And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

2And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

3And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

4But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

5And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

6And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,

7And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.

8Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

9And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

10But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

11And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

12And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

13For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.

14And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

15And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

16And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

17And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

18And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my LORD:

19Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:

20Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

21And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.

22Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

23The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

      24Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

Ah yes, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Where Lot, the paragon of virtue, offered his virgin daughters to a mob to be raped. Last I heard, God decided to destroy the cities well before the mob called for his messengers, so people using that as an excuse for their hate are not only bigots, but they are stupid and illiterate.

And what did the virtuous Lot family do after leaving the city? The virtuous daughters got their father drunk and fucked him to get pregnant. So I guess those who cite this story are in favor of alcoholism and incest. So it’s fair to call Judail and his ilk sick motherfuckers.

Buju is innocent. These are the reasons 1. Buju banton has been hated by the gay right groups ever since boom bye bye, now that he has a very an album thats reaching for the skies, they want to get him down at all costs, they fought his grammy nomination but the grammy committee defended him, now they must stop him at all costs. 2 It is clear that America has strong homosexual communities that have so much power, many of the govt officials are gay, the others that aint gay have friends that are gay, so America is hostile and unsafe as far as Buju is concerned. 3 buju banton doesnt have to trade drugs, he’s got money. Even if he is greedy enough to, he wont be directly involved in it like a common criminal, he’l get people to run things for him. 4 if buju was ever interested in coke, he could av gotten it in Jamaica which would be easier and cheaper not in the US where he knows the feds are watching his every move, Buju aint that stupid. 5 the very fact that an undercover agent had a role in their plot shows how easy it was to set him up (he could have bought weed and then they change it to coke). 6 Buju has now denied the allegations, saying that it is ‘wholly unfounded’. 7 Now, the same people that are behind the mess have started to spread false stories about Buju’s attorney to reduce his credibility. Cocaine is the last thing u’d find with a rasta like Buju. These points I’ve enumerated clearly points out that there is something fishy about buju’s arrest. It is pure setup.

      La Jolie

You do realize that your posts make you the true sodomite here.

The sin of Sodom, per Ezekiel and Jesus, was not homosexuality:

      Ezekiel 16:
“49 ” ‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me.”

That describes your posts about GLBTQ very well. And no, ‘detestable things’ is not a reference to homosexuality, but to human sacrifice (which still occurs in your part of the world: http://www.thedominican.net/articlesone/obeah.htm). Ezekiel repeatedly uses the same word to in chapter 16 when he accuses the people of Jerusalem of idolatry and human sacrifice.

That bit about ‘did not help the poor and needy’ – Banton certainly qualifies there, eh? Considering how terrible the poverty in Jamaica is, and his outward displays of wealth?

Your quote from 1st Corinthians relies on fraud, for neither of the words translated “nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind(gay people)” mean any such thing, but you carefully neglected to quote the whole passage, leaving off that which describes your posts: “10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. ”

You are slandering millions of people, and do we really need to go into the alcohol and drug abuse that is so rampant in Jamaica that is nearly completely defines that country and its people?

As for Leviticus, you’ve bound yourself by all of it now, and must keep every single law. Meanwhile, the translation you posted is erroneous and doesn’t reflect what the Hebrew actually says.

Lastly, Luther states that death threats, like those Banton has made, and you have agreed with, are the moral equivalent of murder itself,

in other words, you and Banton have violated ‘thou shalt not kill’ by threatening GLBTQ people. Your posts, and Banton’s “song” – are sin that are worthy of eternal damnation.

Your hate speech against gays and lesbians is sin, while homosexuality is not sin. If you really follow Jesus Christ, you’ll repent of your many sins against gays and lesbians. If you don’t repent, and publicly ask people here for your forgiveness, it only means that you are not really a Christian, that you despise and hate Jesus instead.

In other words, you have done the very things you falsely accuse GLBTQ people of being. Repent while you still can.

and gay people want have children psychologists assure us that ‘children raised in lesbian and gay households are similar to children raised in heterosexual households on characteristics such as intelligence, development, moral judgments, self-concepts, social competence and gender identity’. The bible says:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

You cannot faithfully teach God’s Word to your children while living a lifestyle specifically condemned by God’s Word. All Christians are sinners forgiven by God’s grace, but living in a homosexual relationship constitutes habitual, unrepented sin.

I love the gays and I love Buju Banton (except I don’t listen to Boom bye bye). I don’t know what you’re feeling but please note: Buju was 15 when he wrote that song due to what was going on in Jamaica at that time. A 9 year old boy was raped by a man. You cannot express yourself by protesting like you do here in America. Therefore he choose to send the message via a song and never thought it would have such effect. My best friend is gay and when we go out, I notice how people stare and point. Sometimes it’s so bad that I get so angry and ask them “Can I help you?” they usually get embarassed and look away. And if they only took the time to know him, they would realize that he’s the nicest person they’ve ever met. So with that said, please give Buju another chance. Stop cancelling his concerts. He has apologized, signed an act and has done several PSAs in Jaminca promoting unity with Gays.

Jamaica view homosexuality as being the worst crime that a person can ever do, this is next to blasphemy. This thing is so bad the Jamaican government won’t even support it. Many great leaders over the world have nothing to do with homosexuals. Homosexuality is view as the unforgiven sin, and its so bad that no one wants it in their community in Jamaica, and other countries. Instead of hating gays, hate the predators and pedifiles that are commiting the crimes against these innocent boys. below is a quote from Beenie after apologizing for the same type of lyrics when he was younger ” I realise that those men were not gays, but were predators or paedophiles, which is not a common word in my dialect.” So the bottom line, educate yourself, Yardie.

@ the Bombocloth…so to hell with Capelton and Sizzla too? They too renounced homophobia and signed the Reggae Compassinate Act. I love Buju’s music, he’s the most Romantic Reggae artist outhere “I wanna be loved” “love sponge.” The media is making this worse on Buju, comments like yours and the Gays not letting it go because of a song he did almost 2 decades ago. Don’t add fuel to the fire or prove to the world right on their perception about Jamaica being homophobic.

Well, we are homophobic, the hell with them, we don’t need their support. The truth is the truth, Jamaica is a very homophobic country, and other countries and africa. we all from the Island know the Buju was not buying drugs. we know that the cocaine come from Columbia and passes through jamaica, and would have been much cheaper to get is more pure from jamaica. still rastas don’t even touch this stuff. every year Buju comes out with multi album. Buju got money, Fuck faggots.

No doubt Buju is the greatest and I listen to him everyday; “The only one” Wicki Dickie” but let’s be real. Homophobia is destroying his career. The others have seen the light. And yes Buju has money but he would have even more for his kids and grandkids and generations to come if so many concerts were not cancelled. Oh, and for Bombocloth, please do not generalize the Caribean because all Islands are not homophobic. I’m from the Virgin Islands (US) and we’re not homophobic. Actually St. Thomas hosts the yearly Ms. Gay Caribean Pageant. Can’t we all just get along? This is my last blog on the subject because you don’t get it and all you’re doing is hurting the Gays with your ignorant comments. I also realized from personal experience that most people who have such hatred are actually on the down low and are afraid to come out. So, how you doing? Bombocloth!

Buju was 15 when he wrote that song due to what was going on in Jamaica at that time. A 9 year old boy was raped by a man.

Then Banton should have written a song condemning rape instead of homosexuality. I’m sure by the time he gets out of prison he’ll have had the difference graphically illustrated for him.

We all make mistakes at 15, but only Buju has to pay for his for the rest of his life? And for the Fans, stop asking him to sing (he doesn’t perform it anymore) that freaking song at concerts! You’re making the situation worse.

@ Judail.. there you go showing your ignarance again. And no, we both don’t know Jamaica is the only Island, you Moron. Go on google and find the definition of an Island. There are thousands of them. In the Atlantic, Pacific, etc. Bob is who made Jamaica famous and that’s why it became one of the most popular Islands until people saw it’s true colors. People are afraid to go there. You may not be starving, you’re living abroad but thousands over there are. Think about it. The Rich getting Richer and poor getting poorer. Homophobia is affecting tourism and everthing else. Believe me, we don’t want to be like Jamaica, but far from it. And how you supporting Buju? When last you bought a ticket for a concert or a CD? Do you own a copy of Rasta got Soul? Because what you’re doing on this site is hurting him not helping him.

Well said; if his PR person had explained it to the venues that cancelled his concerts the way you did, he may have had a chance.

I think you need to re-read what I wrote. Buju Banton called for the murder of all gay people based on one adult raping a child. Rape is not homosexuality. Most men who rape children, male or female, are heterosexual. Banton got it horribly, horribly wrong and gay people suffer as a result. There is nothing in my post that is apologist for him in the least.

Please give Buju a chance. We all make mistakes at 15, but only Buju has to pay for his for the rest of his life?

Banton’s “mistake” continues to this day. He has been implicated in the mob beating of six men believed to be gay a few years ago. In September of this year he reiterated that he is at “war” with “faggots”. He gets a chance when he apologizes, withdraws Boom Boom Bye from circulation and records a song repudiating both Boom Boom Bye and the bigotry it embodies. There are plenty of musicians for me to spend my time and money on who aren’t raging bigoted assholes.

I am a Jamaican and Jamaican have a major problem with other people life style and business. Jamaica is one of the most uncivilized countries in the world! I hope some day an earth quack would come and sink the fucking island and only the good survived. Then a big snow storm come for five month and freezes it, and still only the good survived.
As for Buju I don’t think he should be criminally responsible for that song bumbyby, at the time of recording most 19 or 20 year old Jamaicans don’t know or understand any thing about civil ness even today 99% of the country still doesn’t reach the level civilization and they are emotionally retarded.

How about self-sufficiency issues to give your people a higher standard of living on your home island instead of the scape-goating of your gay family members?

I recommend you concentrate on things other than “other mens ass holes” (your words c/p), and seek to improve the lives of your people (Jamaicans), my people (Americans), and our people (humanity).

Bury your hatred. We gay folk are just as good as you.

I am a black Caribbean woman from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago and I am offended by that comment.I do not advocate discrinating against or killing people based on their sexual preferences or for any other reason that makes us different in this world. I also do not know of any friend or family member that feels that way. I have had gay friends in my life time and I see no difference between them and any other person.

You cannot condemn an entire race of people because of the actions and statements of a few. Is that not putting yourself in the same category as those who wish to divide people. A statement like that just adds hate to this world. Don’t we have enough hate already?
