The Advocate‘s new cover story on Barack Obama from Michael Joseph Gross won’t break any new ground — it’s filled with the same pro and con arguments this website has relayed for months, and stuffed with soundbite quotes from the usual suspects — but it’s notable for one reason: In a media climate where newsweeklies are suffering drastic readership declines, it seems every week they turn to Barack Obama to move copies off the newsstand. Sometimes it’s critical, but mostly Time and Newsweek‘s stories laud the president. So it’s particularly interesting to see a national gay magazine use the president to generate buzz, but move in the opposite direction, criticizing him. Or at least raising the possibility that it’s okay to do so. Not that we need anyone’s permission, let alone The Advocate‘s.

But What Does The Advocate‘s Obama Cover Actually Mean?

There is a difference between reasoned criticism, a la the Advocate, and mindless name-calling, which is what this site peddles frequently.
KD108
Queerty had pro arguments? I’ll have to go through the articles… that’s news to me 😉
wondermann
I agree the article is nothing new, but it’s better written than mess on here
Ohomo
It sure is a clever and novel idea for an Obama themed cover! Hey everybody, why don’t we do a clever play on the Obama “hope” poster? No one has done that yet, right?
Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com
Yes, let’s give the Obambots and the Obama Nostra itself a giggling orgasm by talking about the Advocate or Queerty or…
They are not the issue [no pun intended]. The issue is Obama and his CHOOSING to abandon or outright betray his campaign promises to the LGBT community…which too many read…and are rereading…as love letters.
The article has some errors [exactly WHEN did “they” “apologize” for the despicable, inexecusable, and UNNECESSARY DOMA brief?] and the grades on their Obama Report Card are love letters themselves. But it seems to be calling for civil disobedience to pressure him to do what he promised hie would which is GREAT!
And let me save the Obambots the effort of recycling their old excuses:
He’s not had enough time??? He’s too busy???
Well, they FOUND TIME to DEFEND DADT in court in 1993 homophobic terms;
TIME to DEFEND DOMA using the same homophobic excuses used to pass it PLUS inventing new ones.
Using his LEGAL AUTHORITY to freeze discharges would just take the SECONDS it takes to sign his name. He could have done it while waiting for the Gatesgate beers.
His old friend and LGBT campaign committee cochair [black BTW] Stampp Corbin:
“I expected obstacles to be placed in our path by our enemies; I just didn’t expect it from the President.”
But I see the river of Kool Aid is still flowing across the Net defending him.
No wonder he gets away with it. Y’all have Battered Wife Syndrome: “But he LOVES me!”
Brian
Wake up. Obama admitted he was “struggling with his beliefs,” those pesky “religious beliefs.” Michelle must have them, too.
If he supports us he will risk going to Hell. That’s what he believes. THAT is the problem. It isn’t politics – it is religion.
wondermann
@Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com:
Do you know what betrayal mean? Apparently you don’t.
Don’t be a fool, he has not betrayed us.
ousslander
@KD108: check every article before the election, queerty was riding his jock hard.
InExile
@Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com: Kool Aid drunk and battered wife syndrome is such a lethal combination, should we have any hope they will finally see the light? Nothing is happening, absolutely nothing.
InExile
Hey how about Bill securing the release of the two women hostages? There is an old saying, if you want a job done right hire a Clinton.
Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com
@wondermann:
If you don’t think submitting unnecessary, homophobic, and LYING [“DOMA doesn’t discriminate against gay couples”] briefs to the Supreme Court DEFENDING it and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is betrayal then not only do YOU not know what betrayal means, you have your head so far up Obama’s ass you could see Russia out his mouth.

@Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com: When you try to argue, use facts. The Obama admin is yet to defend/oppose DOMA in the Supreme Court. It has not reached the Supreme Court yet.
Clearly, being abreast of current affairs in the LGBT world gets in the way of your shrill bitchiness. And no, using uppercase letters to hide your ignorance of reality does not work.
prissysissy
@InExile: Aah .. another regular. Don’t let intelligence/reasoned belief get in the way of blind dislike.
You think Bill Clinton’s trip to North Korea happened without the active involvement of the Obama administration? What are you smoking? Just read up the related articles in the New York Times. Or Washington Post.
Quack
No surprise that Queerty couldn’t comprehend what the article was saying. It REPUDIATED the sort of knee-jerk whining and bitching this site peddles in as its stock and trade. Equating your thoughtless, mind-numbingly nonsensical Obama hatred to this articles analysis of Obama’s six months in office is like comparing monkey feces thrown a wall to the Sistine Chapel– and I don’t even think The Advocate article is all that groundbreaking.
I will start taking this site seriously when a.) the authors attribute their names to the drivel they put up and b.) we get some proof that the staff of this site are more than figments of David Hauslaib’s imagination.
SM
ENDA was just introduced today. The Matthew Shepard Act is almost on his desk. Rev. Joseph Lowery was invited to the Inauguration too as a close personal friend of Obama.
Eat your words haters.
Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com
ENDA was introduced in the SENATE today…NO THANKS to Obama.
Shepard Act moving foward…NO THANKS to Obama.
Lowery’s invitation doesn’t make up for Warren’s anymore than a rabbi giving the closing prayer to an event opened with a prayer from Heinreich Himmler would.
Lowery AND Rick “Gay = pedophilia” Warren on the same Obama bill is just another version of how Obama’s longtime friend and national LGBT campaing cochair Stampp Corbin described his DOMA brief: “talking out of both sides of his mouth.”
Mike
Why do any of you actually try to engage wondermann? He’s the biggest apologist around. He didn’t just drink the Kool-Aid, he’s swimming in it.
wondermann
@Mike: Mike, shut up.
J. Clarence
@Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com: So, he gave Warren a high five, he also said he disagrees with Warren’s position. I don’t think that simple fact means he’s anti-gay; he might apathetic to gay issues, like all presidents have been.
What do you want him to do, spit in the man’s face?
Queerty’s overall position is much like Dan Savage’s article in the same issue; and I think if you put each perspective side to side Gross’ article seems more proactive while Savage’s just seems like a rant, much like Queerty some times.
Nevertherless, it’s good the see the magazine taking a harder line to the president.
InExile
@Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com: I love the way Obots give Obama credit for all these things he has had nothing to do with such as Mathew Sheppard Act and ENDA, marriage in Iowa and Vermont and so on. I guess “anything” pertaining to gay rights Obama automatically get full credit for no matter what??? Lets just hope he doesn’t veto ENDA or Mathew Sheppard act. Oh and DADT, what DADT?
Michael @ LeonardMatlovich.com
@J. Clarence:
No, Obama AGREES with Warren in opposing marriage equality. In fact, it was a recording of him saying “I believe marriage is between one man and one woman…God’s in the mix” at Warren’s church that was used by Yes on Prop H8TE supporters in robocalls to millions of California voters, and other anti equality statements he’d made that helped outlaw marriage equality there.
Yes, he said he was against 8 blah blah blah but he didn’t campaign against it, record an ANTI H8TE robocall as the guy he was supposed to be so much better than — Bill Clinton.
And there are COUNTLESS options between spitting in Warren’s face and holding him up to BILLIONS of viewers around the world as someone you DO agree with by inviting him to open your swearing in as President of the United States!

Brian
“God is in the Mix.” Ugh.
We will never elect a “savior,” we must confront the beliefs about homosexuality. If we don’t do that we will never have equality.
Jim
SICK OF OBAMA !!!!!
jason
Obama is all talk, no action. The gay community is dumb for believing him.
Lance Rockland
@SM: I’m not a hater, so you can kiss my GAY ass!
Lance Rockland
@jason: Fucking A!!! I’m sick of being lied to.
marcelo
Obama, is just like all politicians. Like my leader Kevin Rudd, they are all liars, religous moralistic greedy money grubbing fuckers – just corporate puppets. You’d be foolish to believe one single word.
Dennis
@KD108: #2
“filled with the same pro and con arguments”
OH, ha-ha-haaaa-haaaa-haaa…’pro’ arguments in favor of Obama on Queerty? Please, bitches, you’re too funny…Never, never has this website given straight praise to anything Obama has done with out a snarky, or sarcastic, or outright bitchy undertone.
And Obama does deserve some criticism on his handling of our issues…but you consistently have chosen the cheap ‘Fox News’ route in your analysis of any gay rights issue involving the President. You ‘shot your credibility wad’ long ago, pandering to any wingnut who would increase your thread post count.
Your commentary on this particular article, while brief, is actually more balanced than most I’ve seen on this site. Too little, too late? We’ll see how future Obama articles are framed…unfortunately, I’m not optimistic. I dare you to prove me wrong in the future.
Fitz
If he does not win a second term, I wonder if his supporters will say “he should have been more careful” or if they will say “Those damn fagots, who needs them?”
edgyguy1426
@Lance Rockland: I don’t think SM believes you can like the president and yet still be critical (yes even super or hyper) of him on some issues. She doesn’t think that those who are critical who post here have a life or does anything politically active ouside of these posts.@InExile: Does this mean we can credit Bush for Mass Marriage Eqaulity? LOL

@TANK: Was that a cuddle break, or a comment about the pusillanimous nature of gays, or of democrats?
edgyguy1426
I enjoyed the Advocate article BTW
SM
@edgyguy1426:
Are you on crack? There is being critical of the President and there is freaking out over every single thing to the point no one will notice when you have a legitimate complaint.
Hey, Obama is ONE MAN…fuck him if he cannot accomplish what you fail at in 6 months.
edgyguy1426
What do you call every single thing? I’m with Obama on about 85% of where he stands, both Senators from IL are on board. The Mayor of Chicago just forwent (Sorry, syntax) appointing a self-described anti-gay alderman based on a letter writing campaign we plastered city hall with.
Look, I know what I’M doing to get and keep the ball rolling and the pressure on, but I can’t pretend to see into the lives of all these posters here and presume they’re doing nothing in their communities. I think that’s lame. I’d rather look at it from the angle that everyone is doing something to further the cause.
I have no proof otherwise. If people aren’t showing up in OC, then get on the OC community. Don’t lay it on us.
Obama is ONE MAN not a FIERCE ADVOCATE (see: Rachel Maddow)

Great goods from you, man. I’ve understand your stuff previous to and you are just too great. I actually like what you have acquired here, really like what you are saying and the way in which you say it. You make it enjoyable and you still care for to keep it sensible. I can not wait to read far more from you. This is actually a great site.
