But What Does The Advocate‘s Obama Cover Actually Mean?

barack-obama-september-2009

The Advocate‘s new cover story on Barack Obama from Michael Joseph Gross won’t break any new ground — it’s filled with the same pro and con arguments this website has relayed for months, and stuffed with soundbite quotes from the usual suspects — but it’s notable for one reason: In a media climate where newsweeklies are suffering drastic readership declines, it seems every week they turn to Barack Obama to move copies off the newsstand. Sometimes it’s critical, but mostly Time and Newsweek‘s stories laud the president. So it’s particularly interesting to see a national gay magazine use the president to generate buzz, but move in the opposite direction, criticizing him. Or at least raising the possibility that it’s okay to do so. Not that we need anyone’s permission, let alone The Advocate‘s.
