Rutherford County, where the camp is located, has in place an anti-gay resolution. We tried to get it rescinded 10 years ago with a protest meeting at Lake Lure. Bravo to these brave women. There are some mountain families living in that area who are straight out of “Deliverence”, no lie. I hear the banjo’s strumming now. Not exaggerating.

As a fellow North Carolina native, I agree. I wish they would not have used the name â€œCamp Lickalotta”. No, its not internalized homophobia on my part. Its bad taste on their part.

When you name your gay camp “Camp Lickalotta”, it’s going to draw fire in any community. North Carolinians, and specifically those of us from the Asheville area, are no more or less bigoted than anywhere else. Western NC is actually a pretty gay-friendly part of the world, but these folks might as well have named their place “Camp Munchalottabox”. The provocative name is what caused the initial problem. Being a gay North Carolinian, I am not surprised that someone with good intentions got hurt by bigots by being too confrontational, nor am I surprised at the bigoted reaction from some of my queer peers that paint North Carolina (and presumedly all states east of California and south of New England) with the same brush. They say all queers are evil because they’re ignorant and lazy. We say that whole swaths of the population are bigoted for the same reasons.

I’ve been reading the on-line postings about this campsite in my local paper. I was amazed at the amount of hated in those postings. It is a very sad indication of the bigotry in NC. That being said, however, I believe the ladies made a big mistake in their camp name. Knowing they are in the bigoted bible-belt, they should have chosen a less controversial name. I wish them all the best.

I recall once when a bunch of Drag queens etc invaded the Bohemoian Grove conservative enclave abouve San Fran. The Bohemian Club, to which my uncle belonged is one of the most extreme all male Right wing organizations in America all of the White rich Fucks in the country belong-ther presedents etc. It was as gas.
I love it when Gay people will just give a big finger to the conservative “normal” establishment, It might habve been a safer venture if they had been more descrete but we need to stand up and be proud now and again. We are being pushed face first into the mud by these hateful fanatics.
We can’t kid ourselves anymore. It’s part of the right wing escalation.
