Can Kath & Kim Survive America?

Molly Shannon and Selma Blair are reprising the roles of Kath & Kim, Australia's top sitcom that's NBC imported to, once again, attempt to save its reputation as must-see comedy TV. But based on the American version's early showing, even the Aussies are nervous the show is gonna bomb. Are we looking at the next round of Coupling, the British sitcom NBC tried, and failed, to get off the ground in the U.S.? Or might Shannon and Blair actually have the potential to carry this witty comedy — with a huge gay followed — through to at least a full season before Jeff Zucker yanks it?

I love Selma (Molly, not so much, but I don't hate), but this is almost certain to flop…a cult following is the best it can hope for. Most copycat shows fail to translate. The Office is a rare, recent exception.

Does anyone remember the US version of, "Birds of a Feather" starring Rosie O'Donnell and Melissa Gilbert? No? Well there ya go.

why would they do this?

are they mad?

It will be impossible to translate that whole Oz thing of the vile, domineering, flabby daughter who thinks she's god's gift and the poor hen-pecked husband, to the US. They are Oz cultural archetypes that don't exist in the same way in the US (or UK) - and to try and imitate them just won't work, as that brief extract shows all too well.

it's a'gonna suck bigtime! hey i remember the melissa gilbert and rosie show. it was on fox on sunday night. it was pretty funny. i also remember women in prison, hermans head, and all the other fine comedy products of the fox network in its infancy. might be why i quit watching american sitcoms.

lesbian spank inferno indeed.

I think it will tank. The charm and success of the Australian version is, well, it's "Australianess". This seems like a ghost of the original. Like both actresses though, and it could be a DVD one season success.

How botched is the casting? Beautiful Selma playing what WAS casted with a (rather American type character) who was OBVIOUSLY not hot. What were they thinking?? Plus they have a nice new Camry and a Mustang? What about a Tempo and a white Pontiac Sunfire or a LeBaron convertible? It's as if they never even WATCHED the original. Dumb.

Maybe they shouldn't have advertised the new version as the Oz show coming to America — just do a sitcom that fits more of our sensibilities? I couldn't get into the original show as much, but I laughed at the NBC previews — I love both Molly and Selma though, so perhaps I'm biased.
