Canadian Polygamist Will Use Gay Marriage Defense

“The lawyer for a British Columbia man charged with having 20 wives says he’ll use the same-sex marriage law as a defense. The lawyer, Blair Suffredine, says gays can marry in Canada, so why can’t a man have more than one wife. The lawyer says standards have changed. He’s representing 52-year-old Winson Blackmore, leader of a polygamous group in Bountiful, in southeastern British Columbia.” [Fox]

Scare tactic or not, it’s another weapon in the rightwing arsenal. They’ve been ranting for years that every sick fuck would come out of the woodwork wanting to get married if you legalize gay marriage. Now they get to point and tell us they told us so, like a lot of bitter Clintonistas couldn’t (and still can’t) wait to do as soon as they had a chance to jump on Barack Obama.

“Standards have changed,” wow, that’s the money quote. To a religious nut, that’s what they feared all along. That gays have opened a can of worms and society is in for the a downhill slide like no other.

Polygamy has nothing to do with homosexuality or gender issues. Polygamy is major among many religionists. For it is not against any religion Merlin knows of to have more than one wife.

Fox news can support polygamy before gay marriage. They believe homosexuality is wrong and we are going straight to hell. I’m sure O’reilly will go to hell before I do.

well Polygamy and Marriage Equality ARE TOTALLY 2 DIFFERENT things…with hetero / and gay marriage ONLY 2 people are marrying. Polygamy is another story all together, and religious based.

We better not miss out on this chance. We should be joining the lawsuit. If hetero polygamy marriage is allowed, what about gay polygamous marriage. Our fight in Canada is never over.

Polygamy has arrived in Canada. Legal style.
Saskatchewan judges and the Federal attorney general will not prosecute Polygamy. They allow Polygamy under section 51 of their Family Property Act. It states “when a person becomes the spouse of a person who has a spouse…” blah blah.
A search of Saskatchewan Polygamy under http://www.canlii.org will reveal that judges there, for ten years, have refused to enforce Canada’s law against plural spouses ( conjugal unions) i.e akin to married state. In fact, they will force additional spousal status upon already married persons! One doesn’t need to be gay to receive this status.Winston Blackmore can just cite these cases and he doesn’t need to use the Gay defence.
