Kim Davis was carted off to a jail cell yesterday after being found in contempt of court for repeatedly refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples despite multiple court orders that she obey the U.S. constitution. However, Canadian/2016 GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz fired off a statement defending the antigay Christian martyr and calling for “every lover of liberty to stand with Kim Davis.”

“Today, judicial lawlessness crossed into judicial tyranny,” Cruz’s statement begins, speaking of the Republican federal court judge appointed by former President George W. Bush. “Today, for the first time ever, the government arrested a Christian woman for living according to her faith. This is wrong. This is not America.”
We get it. Cruz is playing to the GOP base. But then he goes off on an incoherent tangent about things completely unrelated to Davis’ case, including President Obama, the Affordable Care Act, illegal immigration, welfare reform. Even Ed Lee, the Asian-American mayor of San Francisco considered solidly pro-business, somehow comes up in the Cruz crosshair.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“I stand with every American that the Obama Administration is trying to force to chose between honoring his or her faith or complying with a lawless court decision,” Cruz babbles. And here we thought it was a Republican judge who jailed Davis, based on a decision by the conservative majority Supreme Court.

He goes on to say that anyone who believes Davis should resign from her job is guilty of “defending a hypocritical standard” not to mention anti-Christian.
“Where is the call for President Obama to resign for ignoring and defying our immigration laws, our welfare reform laws, and even his own Obamacare?” Cruz asks. “Where is the call for the mayor of San Francisco to resign for creating a sanctuary city–resulting in the murder of American citizens by criminal illegal aliens welcomed by his lawlessness?”
“Those who are persecuting Kim Davis believe that Christians should not serve in public office,” Cruz continues. “Or, if Christians do serve in pubic office, they must disregard their religious faith–or be sent to jail.” Um, well, President Obama is Christian, and Cruz is insisting he resign.
“We are a country founded on Judeo-Christian values, founded by those fleeing religious oppression and seeking a land where we could worship God and live according to our faith, without being imprisoned for doing so,” Cruz concludes. “I call upon every Believer, every Constitutionalist, every lover of liberty to stand with Kim Davis. Stop the persecution now.”

Omfg these people need to get fucking laid already I’m so tired of this incessant shit in this country with these completely heartless unconscionable and uneducated people.
I am also sick to death hearing people (not all) speak of US discriminating against THEM and persecuting THEM when they are always persecuting us for our sexuality , who we love, whether we can give blood to save someone else’s life, be allowed hospital visitation to our dying loved ones, whether we can adopt a child etc…
I wish these people would just shut the fuck up already.
Thankfully Ted Cruz doesn’t represent all Canadians just the fraction of ignorant and narrow minded idiots who will never evolve intellectually in regards to lgbt Americans in this country.
Pathetic truly pathetic.
Robert Kasmerski
He’s not a natural born citizen! They’ve been giving Obama crap all these years about where he was born yet Cruz was born in Canada! He can’t be President.

I know that Cruz was born in Canada, but please don’t associate him with that wonderfully free country… also Canada has had the freedom to marry for many years now so pls don’t confuse Canada with agreeing with Kim Davis… thank you 🙂

Puleeezz….Canada doesn’t claim Ted Cruz. His mother was an American and his father was Cuban when he happened to be born in Canada (on their way to the USA). I guess Cruz can call himself an “anchor baby” who got automatic Canadian citizenship when he was born in Calgary. He made a very public show of renouncing the Canadian part of if his dual citizenship. He’s now 100% American and all yours America. Don’t blame us.

so part of the US Constitution is for PUBLIC servants to require other citizens to follow their religious beliefs? Hmmm…. I don’t think I ever saw that any time I have read the document. Ted, maybe you should reread it for yourself. That is, if you have ever actually read the thing for yourself.

So are you saying we no longer have to obey laws and the constitution??
There are a few stop lights in my city that I disagree with. So the next time the light is red I have the right to run that light?? If she doesn’t have to obey the law about issuing marriages I shouldn’t have to sit at this stupid light that someone else out there and I didn’t!! Or what about the law on guns which are being tested. Because I don’t like that law I have the right to open fire in a movie theater?? Same thing. She doesn’t like the law, doesn’t do her job and still hasn’t been fired.
Thanks for helping me understand. I’m about to head out to the car. I’ll let you know how it goes.
btrmale
@William: no. He’s yours. You get him back.

I’m not a fan of my city being a sanctuary city but that happened well before Ed Lee became mayor. The ones that really sticks in my craw are the cops and much-despised sheriffs’ department doing zilch about illegal immigrants who commit crimes in the city.
As to the Idiot Cruz, I’m sure Canada would rather not be associated with him.

@btrmale – Canadians and Americans have many things in common and enjoy amicable neighbourly relations. Perhaps, in the interest of continued peace, we agree to deport him somewhere else. His father was Cuban… Maybe he’s their problem?
If we have to take him back, at least we don’t have to take Kim Davis. She’s ALL yours.

As a lover of liberty I am reminded by how prescious the lives of the men who took their vows together in the Rowan County clerks office this morning. And I’m also reminded by what a narrow minded bigot Ted Cruz is.

It frightens me that we have presidential candidates who support obvious law breakers. They seem to not understand that this a democratic nation run by laws. This is not a theocracy! Religion and religious views do not trump the law. Yes–it’s very unnerving…
Kathryn Kroll
i wish we could arrest ted crud for not doing his job. he just wants to be famous, not work.

Don’t blame us for Ted Cruz. He may have been born here, but he renounced his Canadian citizenship to make an illegal run for the U.S. Presidency. Whatever crazy he’s got (and it’s a lot) he didn’t learn it here. BTW, keep your eyes on Canada. Cruz’s fellow-traveller and right-wing nutbar Stephen Harper will have his ass handed to him by voters on Oct. 19.

I can’t believe how many people don’t know what separation if Church and State clause in the First Amendment to the US Constitution is.
Here’s a little help:
“Separation of church and state” (sometimes “wall of separation between church and state”) is a phrase used by Thomas Jefferson and others expressing an understanding of the intent and function of the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
In other words: Keep you bible out of my government.

Man oh man… what the heck is wrong with Ted Cruz and his gang?
Do they really think that any semi-educated American cannot see through his illogical spin?
The government did not “arrest a Christian woman for living according to her faith.”
The government could not care less about her religious affiliation or beliefs.
They arrested her because she legally swore to uphold an oath of office and then chose not to do so.
She broke the law. She was arrested. That’s what happens when you break the law (and get caught.)
In all fairness, I get that the law she swore to uphold changed after she was in office.
The moral (and intelligent) thing for her to do at that point was to resign her office,
since she knew that she could no longer do her job.
She then could have stayed true to her religious beliefs and the government could have continued doing its job.
But an intelligent, moral person – she clearly is not.

“Every Lover Of Liberty Stand With Kim Davis” I must agree. You need to be standing ‘with’ her so you can be close enough to stone the bitch. I hope they throw away the key and she rots in there since she refuses to issue marriage licenses to all couples and refuses to resign. The excuse that she is an elected official so she can’t be fired is BS–she is failing to fulfill the duties of her position; I don’t think a criminal should be holding a government office. If you can’t fire her, then suspend her without pay until her term runs out. They used to burn heretics at the stake but she’d make a big grease fire that would burn relentlessly

@alanh1249: The Treaty of Tripoli (Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary) was the first treaty concluded between the United States and Tripolitania, signed at Tripoli on November 4, 1796, and at Algiers (for a third-party witness) on January 3, 1797. It was submitted to the Senate by President John Adams, receiving ratification unanimously from the U.S. Senate on June 7, 1797, and signed by Adams, taking effect as the law of the land on June 10, 1797.
The treaty was a routine diplomatic agreement and was later replaced. It has attracted attention in recent decades because of a clause stating that “the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.”

Screw these hypocritical, opportunistic lackeys. I think it’s time the LGBT community thought on a grander scale — it’s time we demand an apology from the Pope for the part his Church played (and continues to play)as the primary instigator of centuries worth of grievous violence and discrimination against our community and demand also that he call for an end to all violence and civil discrimination perpetrated against us.
Zenguy
It’s a bit of overkill to arrest her. But if she is unable to fulfill the duties of her job because of her religious beliefs, she should quit her job or be fired. Replace her with someone who will do what they are required to do.
This religious freedom bullshit is getting out of hand. If you are in a public service position and have a religious conflict with issues with your job, find another job.
