As if you needed another reason to fly to Cancun, the Mexican resort town is allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry.
It’s not just love or acceptance that’s fueled the move, though: The local tourism industry is eager to get its hands on the pink peso.
We’re totally okay with that.
“The aim is to promote this market niche, which is very attractive for European, Canadian and American couples,” Colectivo Diversidad spokesperson Patricia Novelo told Spanish news agency EFE. “Besides the social part there are many economic benefits, because the gay community generates between 45 and 60% more income.” At least eight same-sex couples have already confirmed they will wed in Cancun in January and airlines and resorts are already busy putting together new package deals for international LGBT travelers.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Novelo herself just got married to her partner, Areli Castro Garcia de Alba, earlier this month.
While the state of Quintana Roo, which includes Cancun, hasn’t formally passed any marriage-equality legislation (like Mexico City did in 2010), lawyers have successfully argued that since the the Mexican Civil Code only refers to “people interested in getting married,” it doesn’t prohibit same-sex unions.
“If it’s not prohibited, then it is allowed and legal,” said Novelo.

BTW, Cancun is pretty touristy and ok– but if you want
a more natural and relaxing time, make a 2 hour drive
from the Cancun airport to Talum. Just so damn beautiful.
We stayed at a gay resort called Adonis, and they treated us
like Gods. Gorgeous place, adorable guys, and a more natural
and healthy vibe than Cancun. (which is ok.. but it’s like every other
big tourist town)
New York Apartments
Last summer, at a time when we needed to take a vacation from our busy lives selling New York apartments, we took a wonderful trip to Cancun. The funny thing is, we witnessed a homosexual couple getting married on the beach, and this occurred before the law went into effect to make it legal. I wonder if this was sanctioned by any organization other than the Mexican Government. Either way, I think it is great that it is now legal and recognized in the eyes of the law, so everyone should have the same rights.
