Anglicans
Robinson’s Righteous “Honeymoon”

Gene Robinson’s politics are personal.

The Anglican Archbishop, whose 2003 ascension sparked outrage in the international Anglican Communion, will have a quite a summer as he married his long time boyfriend, Marc Andrews, and then heads to England to protest not being included in the church’s Lambeth Conference, an every-ten-year-event during which Anglican leaders discuss their evolution. Robinson, of course, wants the Church to expand its guidelines to include the gays, but senior leaders are skittish over the idea, which led to Robinson’s exclusion.

Now, as we’ve mentioned, Robinson’s headed over to put some pressure on his pious peers: Bishop Robinson’s decision to be active on the “outside” of the conference will … Continued…

“Unlawful.”

Australia’s Education Department says an Anglican school would most likely be breaking the law if they ban gay couples from their end-of-the-year dance: “The department has to follow the anti-discrimination legislation. We would again be saying if that was an issue in a school, then a decision not to allow that would probably be unlawful under the anti-discrimination legislation.” [ABC]

Getting Ugly

The gay Anglican war in Canada rages on - and it’s getting nasty. “In New Westminster, a dozen conservative clergy have been denounced by their opponents as ’schismatics.’” Feh, we’ve been called worse. [Economist]

Robinson Refuses Lambeth Compromise

Gene Robinson’s nobody’s sideshow! After being denied invitation to the international Anglicans’ Lambeth Conference this summer, the openly gay Bishop issued a statement that he will not be attending - not officially, at least.

Rather than giving Robinson a notable role, the international Communion, led by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, offered Robinson up for interviews with the media gods.

The “sick-hearted” Robinson, however, wasn’t having it: One workshop on one afternoon and being interviewed by the secular press was not anything I was seeking. I wasn’t going to Lambeth to have another interview with the secular press. If interviewed at all, I want to talk with a theologian. I want to talk … Continued…

Ugandans To Boycott Lambeth

The Anglican drama continues! As many of you know, the Anglican Communion has been at civil war since the American branch electede openly gay Gene Robinson as Bishop in 2003, a move that irritated the church’s more conservative set, who have been snatching congregations and boycotting events in an effort to win power. Uganda’s Anglican Church announced today that it will boycott this summer’s Lambeth Conference, during which Anglican leaders will attempt to iron out their kinks - and their odds aren’t looking good. Chicago’s New Episcopal Bishop Seeks Gay Inclusion

Reverend Jeffrey Lee will use his ascension as Chicago’s new Episcopal bishop to spread gay inclusion. Lee says he sees archaic rejection to be antithetical to the Anglican Communion’s historical position: “That’s one of the tragedies afflicting the church right now. So many of us seem to think that salvation depends on our theological correctness.”

Resurrected GOP icon and gay porn star Matt Sanchez may have lost his mind. Jeremy Hooper had an email exchange with him and it’s pretty nonsensical. Sanchez seems to think “horndog” is a gay term of endearment. Because being horny’s a good thing or because we all talk like overgrown boys?

VA AG Backs No Gay Churches In Property Dispute

Virginia’s anti-gay Episcopal churches got some love from the state’s Attorney General this week. Eleven churches broke away last year to align with international Anglicans who disapprove of the US-branches gay-inclusive policies. The split races some serious questions about property, namely: who gets what?

Now Virginia A.G. Bob McDonnell has taken the dissenters’ side: The attorney general urged Circuit Judge Randy I. Bellows to follow a state law dating back to the Civil War era in resolving the dispute.

That law allows a majority vote of the congregation to determine ownership and affiliation when a “division” has occurred within a religious denomination.

The Episcopal Church argues that the state law is unconstitutional because … Continued…

Gay Preacher Man To Be Fired For Firings?

Reverend Robert Taylor may have to find a new job. Right-wing Virtue Online reports that the gay South African native recently came under scrutiny at his Washington-based congregation: …Taylor, Dean of St. Mark’s Cathedral, a man living openly in a non-celibate homosexual relationship with another man, faces possible firing following a pay raise that brought his salary up to $200,000, while he laid off staff at the landmark cathedral.

St. Mark’s Cathedral fell $100,000 short of its pledging goal in 2007, prompting the Lenten layoff of two priests from the staff. Angry parishioners forced the revelation that the cathedral dean receives more than $200,000 in annual salary and benefits. Almost every parish in … Continued…

“Anti-Gay” Anglican Bishop A Gay?

Another holy outing? American Dennis Wine alleges that he had a sexual relationship Anglican Bishop of Horsham Lindsay Urwin. Lindsay was 37 or so at the time and a good looking man for his age (being 38 myself now that seems like a silly thing to say but it was how I saw things as a 23 year old back then).

We hooked up twice in Holy Week of 1993. I fell for him in one of those puppy dog crushes newly out gay men sometimes have.

My friend warned me that Lindsay had a reputation for “teahouses” (by which he meant frequenting public restrooms). His advice was “don’t fall for Lindsay. He wants … Continued…

Jerusalem’s Archbishop Opposes Anti-Gay Conf.

The Anglican’s gay debates took a new spin this week. Homophobic leaders are threatening to hold their own Jersualem-based conference ahead of the international communion’s Lambeth meeting in London this summer.

Jerusalem’s Archibishop Suheil Dawani, however, says he hasn’t been consulted. Nor does he condone the meeting. I am deeply troubled that this meeting, of which we had no prior knowledge, will import inter-Anglican conflict into our diocese.

It could also have serious consequences for our ongoing ministry of reconciliation in this divided land. We who minister here know only too well what happens when two sides cease talking to each other. We do not want to see any further dividing walls. Sydney … Continued…

Rowan Williams Hid Gay Eucharist From London Bishop

Rowan Williams continues to cause queer controversy. The Archbishop of Canterbury turned heads earlier this year when he held a clandestine eucharist for gay Anglicans. The meeting probably incensed anti-gay Anglicans, but may also cost Williams his job: The Archbishop of Canterbury kept a special communion service for gays so secret that he failed to tell the Bishop of London it was happening in his diocese, The Times has learnt.

Even his critics have been taken aback to learn that he did so by making an incursion on to the patch of the Bishop of London, the Right Rev Richard Chartres, without giving notice or seeking permission.

Dr Williams now risks being seen as, … Continued…

Anti-Gay Bishop’s Unsavory Past Biting Back?

Another unholy scandal? Bishop John-David Schofield of San Jaoquin, California recently led his Anglican flock out of the US-based Episcopal church. Why? Because the Americans are too soft on the gays, so Schofield and his pious posse have aligned themselves with South American-based Anglican Church of the Southern Cone. Such a move isn’t that surprising - the Anglicans have been debating the gays for years. Schofield’s past, however, may have played a role in his queer repulsion: [Shofield] previously attributed his views on homosexuality to his experience of Fresno-based ex-gay group New Creation Ministries.

Although he has been candid about his support for ex-gay ministry, Schofield denies claims that he is or ever has been homosexual. A 1995 newsletter from Voice of Integrity, a pro-gay Episcopalian group, said the Bishop “told members of his clergy that he was a “cured homosexual”.” Schofield denies making such a statement. While we’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt, we can’t ignore this internet comment:
