Principal Prefers Confederacy To Gay Pride

Floridian principal David Davis had some explaining to do yesterday - and he didn’t do it very well.

The improbably named educator took the stand in day one of a discrimination suit filed by 17-year old Heather Gillman, who accuses Davis and Ponce de Leon High School of violating her and others’ civil rights for prohibiting gay pride garb.

The case began to unfold last year, after Gillman and her progressive peers began designing shirts with pro-gay slogans, like “I support equal marriage rights” and “I support gay rights.”

Davis apparently did not approve, because he sent out a memo threatening suspension for students who made such fashion statements. And his reasoning gives some insight into this man’s bad social education…

Ohio Not Okay, Say Some Gays

The majority of local gays may enjoy living in Columbus, Ohio, but not everything’s peachy keen:
[A survey of about 3,400] found that:

• More than half the participants were in committed relationships, and 80 percent want the right to legally marry in Ohio.

• Nearly 60 percent said they had been called names, threatened, stalked, intimidated or had personal property defaced because of their sexual orientation.

• More than half said they had experienced discrimination; among that group, two of three reported workplace discrimination.

• Thirteen percent either had not been tested for HIV or did not know their HIV status. None of these are good things, of course…

The Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that governments and state universities can’t offer health insurance to the partners of gay workers. The court ruled 5-2 on Wednesday that Michigan’s 2004 ban against gay marriage also blocks domestic-partner policies affecting gay employees at the University of Michigan and other public-sector employers.” [AP]

John Hagee’s Crude Collection

John McCain-backing pastor John Hagee may have “retracted” his “gays caused Katrina” comments, but he’s got a whole slew of other offensibles.

Here are two of our favorites from a totally frightful top ten: “The military will have difficultly recruiting healthy and strong heterosexuals for combat purposes. Why? Fighting in combat with a man in your fox hole that has AIDS or is HIV positive is double jeopardy.”

“It is impossible to call yourself a Christian and defend homosexuality. There is no justification or acceptance of homosexuality…. Homosexuality means the death of society because homosexuals can recruit, but they cannot reproduce.” Let it be known that McCain has not denounced Hagee.

Gay Pamphlet Sparks Religious Debate

Religion in schools has long been a dicey issue. Throw a little gay into the mix and, well, you’ve got a full-on mess!

Federal Judge J. Owen Forrester recently ruled that Georgia Tech University must stop funding gay “safe space” pamphlets that allegedly deride homophobic religions.

The pamphlets offered an overview of various religions and noted, quite controversially, that many religions take Biblical tales “out of context” to justify discriminatory behaviors. They went on to outline specific religions, describing some, such as the Church of Latter-Day Saints, as “anti-gay.”

eHarmony’s Unholy Spin…

The spin doctors are in!

Newsweek’s Lisa Miller recently wrote on a gay couple’s lawsuit against dating site eHarmony, which prohibits same-sex couples.

The site claims that they haven’t calibrated themselves for the queers and, thus, cannot accommodate our allegedly unique dating styles. They also justify their discrimination by saying they’re marriage oriented and, since gays can’t marry, they’re just following the law of the land.

We’ve always doubted their arguments, but Miller falls for it hook, line and stinker!

Aussie AG Seeks Gay Reform

Australian Attorney General Robert McClelland has our vote. The legal-minded politico yesterday announced “overdue” plans to ingrain gay equality into federal law. About 100 laws will have to be revamped, he said, because a recent review found them to be discriminatory.

Everything from workplace compensation to social security will get revamped during these reforms, says McClelland.
The changes will provide for equality of treatment in wide range of area including superannuation, taxation, social security, workers compensation, pharmaceutical benefits

These will make a practical difference to the lives of a group of fellow Australians who, far too long, have suffered discrimination at a commonwealth level.

Discrimination on the basis of sexuality has long been removed from … Continued…

Principal No Pal To Gays

Ew. While we on the subject of nausea, a Tennessee principal has come under fire for singling out a gay couple, of whom she openly disapproved. Hollis F. Price Middle College’s Daphne Beasley last year went around and asked teacher to compile a list of all known student couples so that she could “monitor PDA,” which has been an elementary bane since our school days back in the 1800’s.

Of the couples gathered, and displayed on the educator’s desk, homo-partners Andrew and Nicholas received special attention, especially when Beasley - or Beastly - approached Nicholas’ mother and essentially outed him. The principal also told the woman that she disapproved of such behaviors. And that’s hardly the worst of it…

DNC Chief’s Gay Promises Mean Little

Leah Daughtry sure knows how to put on a show.

The DNC Chief of Staff last week addressed the National Black Justice Coalition and promised to gives gays more say in the party’s politics. And you can be sure she used to opportunity to praise the party’s chairman, the woefully forgetful Howard Dean: We made a commitment under Gov. Dean’s leadership that we wanted to do something different. We wanted to make sure, make a way so that people from various communities, and particularly the GLBT community, would have a seat at the table, would have a voice, would have a vote when we nominate our president of the United States. Daughtry went on to say that she and her peers are going to fight tooth and nail for diversity. Unfortunately Daughtry keeps her gay inclusion on her terms.

Catholic Adoption Agencies Refuse To Evolve

Some British Catholics are sticking to their homophobic guns.

Rather than complying with new anti-discrimination laws, Bishop Malcolm McMahon and his pious pals at the Catholic Children’s Society - and other agencies - will no longer provide adoptions. Because archaic ideology’s way more important than a child’s happiness.

Said McMahon: We have been coerced into this, I am not happy about it at all. The regulations have coerced the children’s society into going against the Church’s teaching, and we don’t wish to do that. McMahon promises that his group will try their hardest to “merge” with another adoption agency. That way the sin’s placed on someone else!
