John McCain’s (Secret) Gay Meetings

John McCain’s obviously not ready to come out for the gays. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee has kept up a series of off-the-record meetings with the Log Cabin Republicans.

We’ve known for a while that McCain and the gay GOP group have been holding talks, but apparently things are getting serious. Too bad everyone’s remaining mum: Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon confirmed his meeting with Senator McCain earlier today.

A source with close ties to the Log Cabin Board of Directors provided information about the meeting to GayPatriot earlier this week. This source disclosed that the Log Cabin meeting was not reflected on Senator McCain’s published schedule in advance and the meeting. A … Continued…

Gay Cowboys Show Off Their Moves

Last night’s episode of NBC competition America’s Got Talent, which we once tried - and failed - to watch, featured the DC Cowboy’s, a gay Western dance troupe.

“Think Brokeback meets Broadway,” quipped one member. And judge David Hasselhoff loved it, giving the boys a green light, saying “Save a horse, save a cowgirl!” Apparently he’s not familiar with Brokeback.

The group now heads to Vegas. This means, of course, that we’ll get another shot of sitting through Talent. Thanks, DC Cowboys!

Gay Politicians Boycott HRC

The campaign against Human Rights Campaign continues.

HRC came under fire last year after flip-flopping on an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act. After vowing to fight for trans rights, the non-profit did an about face and began pushing for a gays-only version of the legislation.

Now, months later, the after shocks are being felt in San Francisco, where two of the city’s gay politicos have vowed to boycott HRC’s annual dinner next month: On Tuesday, San Francisco Supervisors Tom Ammiano and Bevan Dufty introduced a resolution at City Hall calling for a bill that includes transgender people and recognizing the boycott.

“The Human Rights Campaign should not be human rights cowards,” Ammiano said at … Continued…

Did GLAAD’s FX Fight Have A Point?

For the first time in quite a while, we’re thinking about GLAAD. Or, rather, GLAAD has us thinking, which is even more rare.

The gay media watchdogs released an angry statement yesterday condemning cable network FX for not including a disclaimer with anti-gay activist Peter Sprigg’s outlandish comments about the “homosexual lifestyle.” The comments come on tonight’s episode of 30 Days, which is basically a longer version of Wife Swap, on which a woman against gay parenting goes to live with - you guessed it - a gay dad. Shenanigans and bigotry ensue. And that makes GLAAD sad:(

FX has since released their own statement insisting they’ve done no wrong: “The comments … Continued…

Obama’s “Gay” Speeches: Collected!

Barack Obama has had some pretty gay moments over the past few years. And by that we mean he has consistently mentioned queer communities in his stump speeches. Some excited voter - or crazed fan - has collected Obama’s greatest same-sex hits into a meaty nine-minute video.

Relive the lavender love, after the jump…

Revival?

Designer Marc Jacobs recently released a new take on the rainbow flag: “rebel pride.” This startling development has everyone in the entire world wondering if the multi-hued symbol will come back in style. No one question has captivated so many people since “Who Shot JR?” (It was jilted lover - and sister-in-law - Kristin, by the way.) [The Shophound]

Five Shows Gay Men (Should) Love

We have a confession to make. You know MVP, the cliché ridden Soapnet series? Well, we’re already total fans.

Yes, it’s terribly overacted, trite and a blatantly low budget imitation of Footballer’s Wives, but those faults make it all the more fun. What’s more, it’s positively brimming with attractive men. Thus, like other series before it, MVP seems poised to become a gay favorite.

This got us thinking - what are some other gay favorites that aren’t necessarily “gay shows?” Thus, we’ve wracked our television loving brains - and pink pals - for currently airing series the gays love - or could, at least. Our one rule: no major gay characters, which very nearly ruled out ABC.

Gay Author Provides Lesson In Love

Don’t be fooled by the cover, Bob Morris’ Assisted Loving is not about a stooped old man eating roast beef in Florida. Well, it is - at times - but this memoir’s more than that.

Picking up soon after his mother’s death, Assisted Loving chronicles former New York Times columnist Bob Morris’ struggle to find his eager beaver father a date. Surely trolling personal ads for one’s father can take a toll, but, after all the arguments and aborted missions and, yes, his own dating misadventures, Morris finally learned to love his father. And, really, that’s what this book’s about: learning to love a parent - and yourself - as you look toward at times bleak future.

Morris recently sat down with our editor to discuss how this experience helped him come of age, the ethics of memoir writing and how his father led him toward his own relationship.

Gay Man Rallies Against Barack Obama

There’s no doubt that this year’s primary season tested Democrats’ patience. Not only did it drag on longer than a bad date, but the complex and often irksome superdelegate system - coupled with the Florida and Michigan debates - made this year’s election seem more like a drama than a political process. Now that the Democrats have their nominee, Barack Obama, a gay man by the name of Will Bower hopes to dismantle months of hard work: [Bower] said he helped establish the grassroots group Party Unity, My Ass this month to connect voters who are angry that Obama is the Democratic presidential nominee.

“I feel that Barack Obama is an anti-democratically chosen candidate,” … Continued…

In The Mixner

David Mixner’s been in the political fray for over forty years, since Martin Luther King inspired the burgeoning activist’s social responsbility.

In the years that followed, Mixner fought battles great and small, worked inside campaigns, got arrested protesting unjust wars, joined the McGovern Commission - which rewrote the Democratic party’s rules - and would later rally gays around his old friend Bill Clinton, whom Mixner met while crusading against the Vietnam War. Mixner went on to join Clinton’s campaign and became the first openly gay man actively - and very publicly - involved in a presidential election.

Those were optimistic times, but Clinton would later break with Mixner by signing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, which prohibits openly gay soldiers from serving in the military. Furious over Clinton’s apparent betrayal, Mixner came out against the discriminatory policy, a move which ended up getting him booted from the inner circle. Of course, Mixner’s always been more comfortable on the outside. In fact, he describes himself as “the best outsider on the inside.”

Now, as we charge toward November, Mixner’s hoping to bring the gays to another Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama. During a recent conference call with the Senator’s campaign, Mixner invoked the Clinton campaign, saying:

[This is] probably for the first time since the 1992 convention, we have an extraordinary opportunity to make history as a community. We have four months to do it, so we must gather and unite in our opposition to McCain and in an opportunity to really create something special in this country – not only for the country, but for ourselves and future generations of LGBT people.

Considering Mixner’s mixed career, editor Andrew Belonsky chose to start this interview on a decidedly untraditional note…
