The gay watchdogs over at GLAAD gave gay news rag The Advocate a media award for “Best Overall Coverage,” thus dashing the hopes of Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek and other mainstream magazines. Now, no disrespect to The Advocate, but they should inherently have great gay coverage, which translates to an advantage. This is like giving the Pope an award for “most prayerful,” or something. The media watchdogs over at GLAAD are tickled pink about ABC soap Brothers & Sisters‘ forthcoming gay wedding: “We applaud ABC for highlighting Kevin and Scotty’s declaration of commitment to each other in the presence of their family and friends. Kevin and Scotty’s ceremony reflects the ongoing commitment of Brothers & Sisters and ABC to making visible the multi-dimensional lives of gay characters.” [Contact Music]

The GLAAD Media Awards may be causing some residual drama.

Cable channel Bravo paid an unspecified sum to air the entire event next month, but a reader speculated that queer-centric Logo, an MTV property, decided to play a little game of “gotcha” with the awards.

Kathy Griffin’s got a high opinion of her sex skills. The red-headed funny lady remarked at last weekend’s GLAAD Media Awards, “Me and all of my assistants, we all want to fuck T.R. Knight. We’re gonna give it one more shot tonight. I’m going to girl-rape him.” [E!]

If you’ve ever wanted to see “lackluster” in action, look no further. As you most likely remember, North Carolina Governor Mike Easley caused a stink yesterday when he endorsed Hillary Clinton, saying, “[She] makes Rocky Balboa look like a pansy.”

Well, loads of homos were offended by Easley’s remark, but even more so by Clinton’s silence on the matter. The Senator has long been a gay favorite, so one would hope she could find the balls to speak out against Easley, who many claim uttered the dreaded “hate speak”.

In fact, one reader reminded us that Mrs. Clinton once vowed to denounce any hate speech in her campaign. During MSNBC’s February debate, while discussing Louis Farrakhan, Clinton took on Obama for “rejecting,” rather than “denouncing” the anti-Israel leader. Mrs. Clinton went on to say, “We cannot let anyone in any way say these things because of the implications that they have, which can be so far reaching.”

The aforementioned reader wondered whether the presidential nominee would make good on her promise. We seriously doubt it.

Ugly Betty actress Becki Newton no doubt enjoyed herself at last night’s GLAAD Media Awards. Newton and her castmates, including the ever-adorable Michael Urie, took home the prize for outstanding comedy series, while fellow ABC show, Brothers & Sisters, won in the drama category.

Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty accepted the Vanguard Award, and got a little friendly with presenter Ellen DeGeneres. Kathy Griffin won for My Life On The D-List, and shared the award with her lovely mother, just like a gay man!

Tom Ford, meanwhile, awarded Herb Ritts a posthumous award, and a Medusa-esque Sharon Stone presented Rufus Wainwright with Stephen F. Kolzak award.

GLAAD and its star-studded pals will celebrate the non-profit’s 19th annual media awards this weekend.

You know, when scads of celebrities come together to talk about how television help gay people - the least taxing of all activism.

In honor of the big event, Variety published a sizable article looking at the evolution of homos in media, especially on ABC, which garnered five nominations for its shows, like Brothers & Sisters.

Homophobic policies can cost you. Hotelier Doug Manchester learned that lesson yesterday after GLAAD canceled its “Pride Rocks” reservation at Manchester’s Hyatt after learning that Manchester contributed $125,000 to get a gay marriage ban on November’s ballot. That initiative garnered enough signatures just this week.

GLAAD president Neil Giuliano insists his organization will endorse other Hyatt “Pride Rocks” events, but simply cannot condone Manchester’s branch: Mr. Manchester‘s decision to fund an initiative that would hurt loving, committed gay couples makes it impossible for us to continue to be associated with any promotion of his venue. Janet Jackson talked all sort of gay with gossip monger Marc Malkin. In addition to voicing her support for gay marriage, lauding drag impersonators and “owning” her legend label, the singer shows lesbian Ellen DeGeneres loads of love: MM: I actually think Ellen may have a little crush on you. You two had a great rapport when you were on her show.

JJ: I absolutely adore here. She’s smart. She’s funny. She’s fun to be around. I really enjoy her. She’s very talented.

MM: It’s kind of amazing that when Ellen came out of the closet her sitcom was canceled, but now she’s back on top—one of our biggest stars.

JJ: I’m so happy she did do that, because someone had to take that stance…For her to be so courageous and something came out of it much bigger and much better and really positive. It was a shame that they canceled her show once she did that. That’s ridiculous… Jackson can give Ellen more love on Saturday, when the comedienne will present Jackson with GLAAD’s Vanguard Award.

And we thought MSNBC’s Morning Joe team were offensive! Fox News’ Red Eye anchors had plenty of bile to spread about pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie, like referring to him as a “transgender sideshow” and hoping the delivery is “the worst experience in his life.” Nice…

If you’re anything like us, you’re wondering why GLAAD’s remained silent on Joe Scarborough’s trans trashing last week.

For those of you who missed it, Scarborough and his cohorts on MSNBC’s Morning Joe took multiple shots at pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie, whom they referred to as disgusting and the such. Obviously we all knew Beatie’s Oprah appearance would cause a controversy, but had hoped that mainstream news agencies would have a little more class. Not Scarborough, though.

The gay media watchdogs over at GLAAD called on boyish Jay Leno to apologize for his Ryan Phillippe “gay look” comment. And, because the scandal involves celebrities, the tabloids are getting involved. All signs are pointing to war. [Us]

Los Angeles Times journo Tom O’Neil sure ain’t happy with GLAAD.

O’Neil wrote last week that the homo media watchdog should revoke the award it bestowed upon As The World Turns for the soap’s gay teenage love story. Though certainly ground breaking, that story’s caused a bit of protest among gay fans, who have urged producers and writers to lift a ban on the character’s sex lives. The teens, Luke (Van Hansis) and Noah (Jake Silbermann), kissed in early 2007, but a spokesperson from Proctor & Gamble, which produces the show, says they nixed new scenes “”because of some of the feedback that we’ve gotten, and because of what we thought was best for the show creatively”.
