Alright. So, DNC Chairman Howard Dean yesterday released a statement on California's gay marriage ruling. And, by some sort of politically expedient miracle, Dean managed not to use the word gay. Incredible! Said the former Vermont governor:

The Supreme Court of California today took a step forward in the long march toward protecting equal rights under the law for every American. This should not be a matter of politics or partisanship; it is a matter of protecting the rights and dignity of all American families.

Yes, that's totally true, but you know the gays aren't going to take Dean's "gay" omission.

Take, for example, gay activist Larry Kramer, who had some harsh words for Dean - and others. In an angry missive to Michael Petrelis:

This is all shocking, michael, all the responses from hillary, obama, dean. it shows that we have much much work to do and that HRC is, as ever, out to lunch.

note that hillary and obama go out of their way to insert the words "civil unions" when the california opinion distinctly rules that these are no longer the desirable goal. [all sic]

If there's one homo you don't want mad at you, it's Larry Kramer.

Newsman Tom Brokaw came under fire earlier this week for neglecting to mention gay folk in his new book, Boom! Voices of the Sixties: Personal Reflections on the '60s and Today. Upon hearing the news, legendary gay activist Frank Kameny wrote Brokaw and his publishers a scathing letter which reads, in part:

The whole thing is deeply insulting. As I said, you have de-gayed an entire generation. For shame, for shame, for shame. You owe an abject public apology to the entire gay community. I demand it; we expect it.

Brokaw offers no apologies in this CNN interview. Rather, the venerable journalist dismisses Kameny's criticism, saying, "it was not an oversight on my part to try to downplay the rise of the gay rights movement, which did come later." He's also sure to remind readers that he took "friend" Larry Kramer's advice and aired the first television documentary on AIDS. That's something, right?

Legendary queer activist Larry Kramer took aim at The Advocate at last week's National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association convention.

Taking the microphone following publisher Michael Phelps' celebration of the 40-year old magazine's "new" design, Kramer - whose ACT-UP helped pave the way for the AIDS movement - implored Phelps and his staffers to do more than toying with new fonts.

Holy fag rag!

The Advocate's turning 40 this week - can you believe it? In honor of their very special birthday, the kids are treating themselves to a little face lift courtesy of Luke Hayman, who's credited for revamping Time and New York magazine. A new logo, more graphics and expanded editorial coverage await readers who pick up the celebratory spectacular.

Otherwise Engaged: The Life Of Alan Bates by Donald Spoto offers new details suggesting the strapping sex idol - known for his roles in Women In Love, The Fixer and The Entertainer, among others - got down with the boys. And one of his male mates came in the form of Olympic figure skater, John Curry (pictured after the jump). Daily Mail paraphrases the Olympic-sized details:

Larry Kramer employed his inimitable charm at last night's celebration of ACT UP. Speaking to a packed crowed, Kramer insisted that the fight for gay rights is far from over.

I wish I could make all gay people everywhere accept this one fact I know to be an undisputed truth. We are hated. Haven’t enough of us died for all of us to believe this?

No one is looking out for us anymore the way ACT UP looked out for us once upon a time.

ACT UP is not saving us now. This is not meant as finger-pointing or blame. It just is. No one goes to meetings and our chapters all over the globe have almost disappeared. And we must recognize this, I beg of you.

I don’t want to start another organization. And yet I know we must start another organization. Or at the very least administer major shock therapy to this one.

As part of this revival, Kramer has asked concerned homos to gather in Times Square tomorrow at noon to protest Don't Ask, Don't Tell. While there's no telling how many sissies with show their beautiful, outraged faces, former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey's pledged his support. That's what he tells New York, at least.
