I too am sorry for the good and honorable priests and followers of the church who practice with compassion and understanding in spite of the freaks who control the church, but I am even more so sorry for the victims of the evils that those freaks perpetrate with such abandon and glee.

There is an old adage that “We get the quality of government that we deserve. After all, we voted the people into office that fucked us over.

Should not the same rationale apply to religion? Why aren’t the good priests and honorable priests and followers more vocal about their opposition to the freaks? After all, they are giving their tacit consent by failing to speak up or turning their head in the other direction while the damage is being done by the freaks.

Are their hands any cleaner?

Though notice that the fundraiser was initially spreaheaded by Catholics. You are absolutely right about the laity being far ahead of the hierarchy. After all, the liberation theology movement was primarly driven by Catholics. I don’t think any organization can get as bit as the Catholic Church without at least a few decent and non-judgemental people winding up in their ranks.

It’s just so disturbing that the barely hidden commentary is the “still stuck in medieval times” mentality that a gay person must automatically be a molester, a pedophile, a deviant. THAT thinking is what drives the animosity, the bigotry, the ridiculousness of lack of acceptance. It’s not remotely true, although there undoubtedly are gay molesters, they are not the norm, nor are gays more likely to be so. The real thing is FEAR. Fear that someone not exactly like you is dangerous, is a threat, is twisted and out to do you harm. Please. You harm yourself in being so rigid and bigoted. I have to say…poor God, being blamed for all this when it’s nothing but manmade and imaginary…miraculously thought up by some of the smallest minds ever invented. All that can be done is to continue the battle, continue to educate, continue to live, continue to speak up and participate and demand reform…without that, they win. I am always amazed at the way some are so willing to be led into lemminghood, completely abandoning their own sensibilities and conscious in order to “belong” to something. Fear of “aloneness” and being on the outside…powerful stuff. Too bad those that do so don’t see they are committing others to just that abandonment.
In perspective, it’s amazing that the differentiation between religion, which is definitely manmade structure, a creation built so people feel they belong to something, and faith, which is of the heart and singular to an individual alone, between them solely and their “god”, is so easily lost.The power given to such structure, power to inflict upon others a particular “structure’s” rules and regulations, abandoning the individual’s intimate walk, regardless of if it harms and strips another of their innate rights, is mindboggling in it’s rigidity and diametric opposition to their “structure’s” supposed reason for existing in the first place. Truly just not fathomable…

When that great Book of Life reading takes place, I want a front row seat and lots of popcorn…it’s gonna be an interesting viewing…

I have a theory that what we’re seeing here is a Catholic clergy brain drain. In more closeted eras,the priesthood was a good way for a gay man to fit into the greater community. Who else but a homo would want commit to celibacy in order to sit around for afternoon tea with a bunch of housewives? But as times changed and personal and public lives became more intertwined, we came out, and our options for leading decent lives greatly expanded. And when we no longer went into the priesthood and the church didn’t change, what were left were the very old and the very unstable (pedophiles).

Let them continue their death spiral. Soon they won’t have anyone left listening to them. I grew up Catholic, and this saddens me, but they kind of did this to themselves.

@kevin (not that one): I partly agree. I think the Catholic layity need to seize power, but I’ve seen very clearly first hand the liberal attitudes of many priests and even a bishop or two. I think that these low-level officials (the more liberal ones) will bow under pressure from the layity, it seems to me to be the heirarchy of the church which is the most dangerously out of touch. Hopefully, when this anti-chirst of a pope kicks it we will have a new pope, and vatican III. I think that’s what the church needs.

Oh my….the real shame is that the Church covered up the pedophiles who were breaking not only God’s laws but man’s. The priesthood, since it is supposed to be celibate anyway, was an avenue for the devout Catholic who was gay but did not want to violate the commandments (I am taking to theological position here, just analyzing the situation.) He could devote his life to God and the Church. Many priest, gay and otherwise, were honorable. However, many were not. It was the Church’s inexcusable cover ups that led to the massive number of victims. If they had an open andhonest policy of turning any perp over to the authorities, they would never have lost the trust of their flock.

This Church is engaging in madness. Beating up on homosexuality will not bring anyone closer to God. But is will engender more hatred, closeting, fear, and pain. Way to go, once again.
