OBVIOUSLY … “A key ally in past immigration fights, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said it would not support a[n immigration law reform] measure that has a same-sex provision. Writing to Rep. Mike Honda, D-Calif., the organization said the provision would ‘erode the institution of marriage and family by according marriage-like immigration benefits to same sex relationships.'” Note that the Catholic Church, as a whole, is in the business of keeping families together. The immigration reform that’s backed by a number of legislators in both the House and Senate — that would let gay Americans sponsor their foreign partners — meanwhile, seeks to accomplish the same thing.

Since when does an evil religious cult such as the RC gang get a say in legislation, let alone immigration reform? The only conclusion to be drawn is that there is NO separation of church and state after all. Ban the bastards and remove their tax exempt status and any religious cult that interferes in the political process.
Rudy
The same church that used its immigration influence to help nazis escape to South America.

The Catholic Church is one of the biggest abusers of current immigration law. The INS should crack down on foreign-born priests from Third-World countgries, brought to work “temporarily” in US parishes because of the shortage of priests domestically. Many of these “temporary” or “guest priests” are sex offenders in their own countries. They come to the United States, and are assigned to posts here, re-offend, and then get moved around from parish to parish before the offenses come to light. Then the Catholic Church spirits them off to a foreign country.
In addition, many Catholic priests in border states such as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California actually aid and abet illegal immigrants in the United States, helping them get established here so that they can bring their families, both immediate and extended. These families have their children here as ‘anchor children’, who get U.S. citizenship by virtue of being born here. This is a ticking time bomb for future generations of Americans.
There is no single more corrupt institution in the United States today than the Roman Catholic Church. To this day, the Catholic Church allows (and in some cases even promotes) child sexual abuse, and then abuses its status as a “religious” organization to cover up the offenses and deny accountability and refuse to make proper restitution. In addition they discriminate against women, and preach messages of hate and religious bigotry against members of other faiths. The people of this country need to re-write the Constitution to allow the government more latitude in controlling corrupt religious organizations who abuse the notion of “religious freedom” to break laws.

Wow, what a fucking joke, the poster above? Deport priests from “third-world countries”? Of course, I mean why would you deport priests from France or Germany, they seem pretty white to me. It’s those damn Filipino and Brazilian priests that are so freaking brown and icky.
Idiot.
Not Really Rod Dreher
@Ian: Thank you for pointing out the awkward wording there. In response:
1) France is a Second World Country.
2) The offending priests of which I am aware anecdotally were all Third Worlders.
3) I wouldn’t allow ANY foreign Catholic priests to work in the United States. Period.
Thank you and God bless you.

My name says it all, I cannot even comment on this story, it makes me sick!

Racist much, do you?

I’m not a glbt fanatic. I think we have some assholes on our side like Jared Polis who voted against national health care because it might mean some of his rich buddies would pay a dime more in taxes.
If the bishops tried to amend the Honda bill to take out the objectionable part, no surprise. But that is not what the letter says. It says, if the gays are in the bill, we are outta here. Millions of Catholic immigrants abandoned because a handful of gays would get let in the country. Shameful.

@Robert, NYC: The funny thing is that in Canada there is true separation of church and state and even mentioning the word god in the middle of a legislative meeting is cause for dismissal. Apparently, America likes it when you put your hand on the constitution and swear to uphold the bible. The true evil in this country is the church, and that evil needs removed. Thankfully, the majority of the kids that are growing up now, even in religious homes, tell their god fearing parents to go fuck themselves and become atheist.
Jason
I am curious how this is going to work without a legal marriage or civil union. In the straight world you must marry and prove your marriage isn’t a farce. Obviously, I believe that gays should have the same options as straights but from a regulatory perspective what would we have to do to meet some of the same requirements hetero couples must meet.
galefan2004
@Jason: They do have to be legally married or in a legal civil union. That means they can be legally state married/unioned and have that recognized or they can be legally married/unioned in another country and have that recognized. The aspect of that recognition only exist in regards to sponsorship for citizenship.

The act in question is still in committee and most likely stalled there. It is called the Uniting American Families Act and has a website. They need all the support they can get. Our own brothers here on QT such as InExile have fought long and hard to bring the man they love and are married to their own country. We need to rise up and fight beside them. Do whatever you can to get involved in the fight for the Uniting American Families Act.
https://americanfamiliesunited.org/
Contact your legislators and senators. Call Obama’s office. Do whatever it takes to get this important piece of legislation passed. I just got a response from my Congressman about this issue. I will not stop fighting for this issue until people like InExile can bring the man they love to this country.

@galefan2004:
I could not agree with you more about the need to support the Uniting American Families Act and I do appreciate the fact that you are a fierce advocate for those who are in committed relationships and wish to bring their loved ones to our shores whether they be straight or gay families.
Like InExile, I too am involved in a same-sex, bi-national relationship and cannot bring the man that I love to this country either. Both Inexile and I are determined letter writers and like you, I just got a response about this issue from my Congressman and Florida Senator Bill Nelson as well.
I was, however, somewhat puzzled by the link you provided and which is asking for contributions in a $10,000. fund-raising drive which ends on July 27th.
Without exception, every single “family” depicted was comprised of a man and a woman with children. Where pictures were provided, the “alien” who could not obtain citizenship, appeared to be latino. Not one gay family was shown. Nor, was there even any mention of gay families on that site.
My question is, why are you advocating that LGBT people support an organization that does not appear to be supportive of same-sex LGBT families like InExile and me and whose purpose it appears to be of obtaining citizenship for straight aliens involved in opposite-sex relationships who came to this country illegally or overstayed their welcome? How does that impact or help SSM marriage?
Am I missing something here?

All of you remind of those poor losers that browse the chat rooms hoping to find love. By love, some smart Asian or African fraudster who will give u a couple of days of sweet internet pleasure and connect with you on that borderline pedophile level.
Now you want to do them a favour and bring them into the country…
It is soooo pathetic!!
So i am meant to spend my tax money sponsoring you lifestyle partner into this country under the ridiculous pretext of “uniting families”.
A FAMILY is a man, woman and a child. It irks me that you guys do not even pity the children you bring into your home. You want to decieve them that two daddies is perfectly normal..
That is never..please take note….never..going to happen.

@Not Really Rod Dreher:
First, second and third world are actually obsolete cold-war terms.
“Second world” refers to former soviet allies. France is a first-world state.
“Third world” originally meant non-aligned states, not developing or poverty-stricken nations, as it is commonly understood nowadays.
@duttybarb:
Very compassionate.
Do you think your Lord Jesus would have said the same thing?

@duttybarb:
It is soooo pathetic!!
The only one pathetic here, girlfriend, is YOU!
InExile’s 14 year relationship and my six and a half year relationship are hardly what you term a couple of days of sweet internet pleasure and connect with you on that borderline pedophile level.
Both of our partners are middle-aged, but evil-minded bible-drugged addicts like you are really hung-up on the pedophile, incest and bestiality stuff, aren’t you?
When you can’t make a logical argument against same-sex marriage, that’s when you PERVERTS resort to that sick shit. Tell me, do you finger your clitoris, while you indulge yourself in those pedophilic, incestuous and beastiality-infested fantasies?
So i am meant to spend my tax money sponsoring you lifestyle partner into this country under the ridiculous pretext of “uniting families”.
You really need to get your facts straight before making such ridiculous and unfounded statements. Like the incest, pedophilia and bestiality arguments against same-sex marriage, you are likening legitimate, legal entry into this country with illegal aliens who broke the law by sneaking into the USA or overstaying their visas. Lemons to apples comparison. Fail.
FYI, my foreign partner holds two degrees, one in civil-engineering from the University of Sydney, Australia and another in Computer Sciences from his home country. More than likely, it will be he who will be supporting your sorry trailer-trash twat when he is finally allowed to live and work and pay taxes in this country.
Oh, and btw, speaking of paying taxes, InExile and I are already paying taxes to allow you and your hubby the some 1150 federal benefits afforded to straight families, but which are denied to gay families. No matter. Apparently, you believe in taxation without representation and feel that the Boston Tea Party was a travesty against the British. Why can’t queers just pay their god-damned taxes, stop asking for special treatment and STFU? *Sarcasm front on*
A FAMILY is a man, woman and a child.
The Gospel according to DittyBarb! You don’t speak for everyone and you don’t get to decide what constitutes a family, or tell us how we must live, so give it up, bitch! We’ll decide what constitutes a family, not you, since we are the ones who have to live in it. I know that pisses you off no end, but as Walter Cronkite would have said, “That’s the way it is.”
It irks me that you guys do not even pity the children you bring into your home. You want to decieve (your mispelling, not mine) them that two daddies is perfectly normal..
And it irks me that bigoted, hateful, religious fanatics like you throw their LGBT children out into the street to fend for themselves or support themselves by selling the only thing they have to offer, which is their bodies. Did you know that there are some 9,000 kids on the streets of New York City who were thrown out of the homes by bible-spewing Christers just like you, Dutty? God and your Lord Jesus must be very proud of them?
You should be irked (and loosing sleep) over that fact, not some youngster(s) fortunate enough to have two daddies, or two mommis, to care for and love him/her. How many adopted children do you have in your home, by the way?
That is never..please take note….never..going to happen.
Like it or not, it’s already happening, sweetheart.
It’s a brave new world. Get used to it!
