If somebody is gay, that’s their own business. But it bothers me how people try to say that jocks are not going to like a gay… I think gay people should be allowed to get married and, God bless them, that’s their own business. Listen, if a guy can’t play, that’s the only time we don’t want to play with him. We don’t care about all that extracurricular stuff.”—Former NBA MVP and commentator Charles Barkley discussing gay athletes and the Sean Avery kerfuffle, on SiriusXM Radio.
If you read what he said, he’s of the opinion that it’s ok to be anything on a sports team, as long as you can play.
In other words, if you’re straight (or gay or born female or extremely short or orange) it’s not an issue as long as you can play.
He’s saying that the only issue that matters or should matter on a team is athletic performance.

Very mis-leading headline. Queerty yet again making, or trying to make, something out of nothing. You know it is this kind of foul reporting that is just as negative to our movement as anything else. I swear sometimes we are our own worst enemy.

I wish quotes like this would make it into the mainstream press. [and if I missed seeing it there, that's my bad.]
As my beloved-future-stalker / stalkee. MisterDivKid stated, Mr. Barkley is indeed a gentleman. And a sage.
The use of “a gay” doesn’t bother me: I should check the linguistics blogs to see if anyone’s studied that usage. Gimme a few days & I’ll get back to Qty if something turns up. (Unless I get distracted by some thread on Ukranian neologies a.g.a.i.n.)

@doublestandard: I’m sure you’re trying to make a point but I can’t make heads or tails of it. I think I agree with you, but you’ve left out several words (from what I can tell) so the comment is still unclear.
Perhaps you could try again? Thanks.
