Some Christian activists “must see” some NBC apologies:
A recent Law & Order show portraying a leader in a college Christian ministry as anti-homosexual and Christians as “Bible thumpers” is drawing ire from a watchdog group for anti-Christian bigotry.
…
There is a relentless attempt by the media to stereotype Christians as prone to violence, said Dr. Gary Cass, chairman and CEO of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission, as he criticized the producers as insensitive.
…
He added that it is negative portrayals of Christians like that featured in “Law & Order” which are used to “legitimate violence against Christians.”
For those of you not up on your religious iconography, the image portrays St. Stephen, who’s said to be the first Christian martyr.

How should they be portrayed? As loving altruistic people who accept everyone equally?

Christians don’t need any help from NBC to portray themselves as vile anti-gay bible thumpers. They’re doing a great job of it on their own.

So, calling someone names legitimates violence against them? Hey, christists, we’ve been telling you that for years! (BTW: When was the last time someone was beaten to death or nearly to death walking out of a late-night prayer meeting by a roving gang of liberals?)

The christians apparently want it both ways: they want to be free to spew intolerance, hatred, and loathing, and to actively support institutionalized discrimination, but they don’t want anyone to point out that they’re doing that stuff.
I do hate to quote the bible, since I think it’s utter nonsense for the most part, but in this case it would be relevant, since it’s their book after all. From Matthew 7: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. By their works ye shall know them.” If mainstream christians permit the fundies and their “works” to speak for them–actively or tacitly by silence–then they’ve got no grounds to complain that they’re painted with the same brush.

I’ve never read a news story about the beating of Christians, but I have read many stories of gay beatings and deaths of gays world wide by bigots.

I agree, David. Also, I think the instances of gays standing outside church picnics with signs that say “God Hates Baptists” and “Evangelicals Go To Hell” and “Jesus Deserved to Die And Is Burning in Hell”. When we see that sort of thing, well, I’ll giggle hysterically and clap.

(oh, throw in an “are rare” after “…Burning in Hell” up there and beat me for failing to proofread my post. Apologies.)

It’s all well and good to expose the christians as compulsive haters and to point out that their hate filled propaganda promotes discrimination, harassment and violence.
But we should ask ourselves why bigots mount such a major a misinformation offensive on this question. It’s because the christians are more than aware that public sentiment is changing. Large numbers of people beyond ourselves make the connection between christian bigots and gay bashings and on the question of violence they are on our side. The bigots were terrified in the aftermath of the publicity generated by Matthew Shepards murder. This is their Achilles heel and we should go after them the same way the Southern Poverty LAW Center went after the KKK. www dot splc dot org
A campaign that directly blames them for murders and discrimination and launches lawsuits against them is long overdue and will help much more than another futile exercise in finding a ‘gay friendly’ ‘lesser evil’ in the upcoming quadrennial election frenzy. We don’t need ‘gay friendly’ anything – that’s a code word for ‘Vote for me and get stabbed in the back’. We need the original ENDA, the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes law, repeal of the DOMA’s, a hate speech bill, the repeal of DADT and a law providing for repealing tax exemptions for all religious cults.

Fundamentalist Christians always have seem to have the view this is ancient Rome and Christians are still being fed to lions and tigers in the coliseum. This continues despite the fact, they largely run things in the U.S. I don’t think it was gay people or liberals who mandated blue laws, anti-sodomy laws, and Jim Crow laws. It was a fundamentalist Miss America that campaigned to repeal protections for gays in Florida and helped the fundies pass laws prohibiting adoptions by gay people. As ee.em.bee pointed out, gays are not prone to carry signs saying God hates fundies although if God really existed, I suspect he might actually hate fundies.
